An answer on how the viewer is important and Serial producers can no longer ignore viewers interest and protests This is an item from a newspaper and though CB is not mentioned it is very relevant to the ongoing discussions we r having on different threads and posts so friends for ur information and ur views.
Yeh audience maange more!
The hand that wields the remote can no longer be ignored. Suddenly soap addicts are assuming greater importance than before.

Even as the war on the small screen hots up with various shows introducing new characters and novel ideas, the producers can't pat themselves on the back just yet. If TRPs are anything to go by, no particular show has managed to retain the top spot for long.

Well, blame it on the audience who are now actively involved with the storylines of the shows. While producers and directors continuously make decisions that affect the storylines in most popular shows, audiences don't always take too kindly to the changes resulting in a drop in TRPs.

Now however, the audience gets their way, thanks to online fan forums, emails, etc that they shoot off to channels and producers and make them eat humble pie.

Very recently Sabki Laadli ... Bebo, tried to spice things up by introducing Bebo's evil twin Rano. But the furore created by the loyal fans over the negative character made the channel relent and put an end to that particular chapter. Similarly, Dill Mill Gayye used to be a TRP-tripper when Karan Singh Grover and Shilpa Anand played the leads. But when the actors quit the show and new characters introduced in Season 2, fans were dismayed and couldn't adjust to the new romance blossoming between Jennifer Winget (who's the new Riddhima) and Karan Wahi (Sid). Finally the channel and production house brought back KSG earlier this year and more recently, Shilpa was introduced in an all new avatar in a one-and-half hour special episode. And now, prime time faves Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kitni Mohabbat Hai too are slated to make a comeback for a second season, thanks to audience demand.

Now Nupur's death in Miley Jab Hum Tum has upset loyal fans who have not taken to the sudden change too kindly. Producer Sudhir Sharma says, "We really respect our audience's reactions, since we make the show for them. But we also have to be logical in our story-telling." Whether the character will make a comeback for the fans is a question that remains to be answered though. "We work really hard to make these characters popular, whether it is their dialogues or acting or styling. Bringing a character back is not an issue and we are not averse to the idea if it logically fits into the storyline," says Sharma. Producer Ratna Sinha believes that the scenario has changed drastically, and now it's not the producer or channel, but the audience who calls the shots. "Today, audience reaction can change everything — from a storyline to a character. And why not? They are the ones who make a show popular. So one should give them what they want to see," says Sinha.
So how do producers know what the audience wants? "One can gauge the reaction from your circle of friends, people in the neighbourhood, etc. They will tell you exactly what's working for them and what's not. And then there are emails as well," explains Sinha.
Producer-director Rajan Shahi who proposes to bring about a big change in Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai by bumping off Sadhna and Ranvir's characters feels that giving in to audience demand could be a problem. "Yes, audience reaction is very important. Television is a medium where one gets instant feedback. But at times the audience reaction is extreme and it hinders the natural progress of the show," opines Shahi.

So the question now is, are the big changes brought about simply to gauge the reaction of the audience? "Whether the junta likes it or not will reflect in the TRP. But if big changes are made in the storyline minus the gimmick and as a natural progression, the audience will surely accept the changes," he says.

It's true that the advertisers bring in the revenue, but today, the power to change an entire storyline ultimately depends on remote control junkies. And for once the audience sure loves being in the driving seat.

Chalhov thanks for the article. For me the sentences in bold stands out. I have mentioned this before we all have to write what we like and what we don't like. This is the only way the makers will know what we think about their tracks...accepting what is dished out to us just because this is how it works does not work for me. We do have the right to say or tell our feelings and critisize the story, writing, acting, presentation.......when I critisize something I am not bashing that person, I critisize so that it become better.
Although we are giving them different ideas, it is upto the creatives and the production houses on what they pick to incorporate in their story......if they decide to pick something then they should use their intelligence and think whether it mixes in well with their main story line....main premise of the story and their track or not...whether it will bring in any discontinuity in their tracks or not..whether it will clash with the characterisation or not........they should choose wisely and carefully and not because the suggested story is popular......if a story is shown in a logical way, it will click with the people...it will touch their emotions and will inturn become popular.

Chalhov,
It is interesting what you wrote. Even though these people mention that they care about the audience, they do only after the show starts slipping and they lose TRPs. In that case, many times it is too late to change the show. I used to get optimistic when CB would show some nice episodes. I didn't much like the tracks after the burning episode, but got hopeful when they showed that confrontration between Vishaka and Radhika in the Goa hotel as to me it implied that Radhika finally got over her obligation and realized the true nature of Vishaka and gave priority to Dev. Even though it was not complete as the discussion between Dev and Radhika bordered on his apologizing for doubting the greatness of Radhika which wasn't the point. In any case, we know how bad the next 3 months were in CB land. Not sure if they will even be able to go prior to burning track, let alone close to its peak during last April and May.
But, I came across the following article few days ago. I am not familiar with the serials mentioned in the article and neither know the story. The only thing I know is that some of these serials have been either cancelled or in process of being cancelled. The truth is that all of the soaps have these old methods - leap, separation, death of a beloved character, replacing the actor with another one and so on. Initially, they stretch a bad track like a rubber band to increase the life span of the show without caring about the audience or continuity of the story. Once it fails and audience leave bringing down the TRPs, they fall back to these formulas to bring the audience back who come back for a while to see if their favorite show has improved. But, it doesn't and eventually it gets cancelled.
As a viewer, I am going to write if I don't like something. Lately, I have been seeing some posts about not enjoying the show and it is just a story. Of course it is and we all know it. Also, these people are free to post their views as it is a free forum. But, my question is that I started watching this show because I liked the story. I still watch it out of habit and because I still am attached to certain characters whose progress I want to see. There are few other reasons for which I watch it. Either I will watch it until the end or until even the attachment to the characters is more than offset by the bad story and it becomes totally unbearable. It is the same with the books I read. I have few books which I haven't completed because I lost my interest in the middle or because I find the story too ludicrous.
In any case, my point is that they care only about the audience to the extent that TRPs are affected and by that time it may be too late. I feel all soaps be given a shelf life of 1 year. That way, they will have a beginning, middle and the end.

Thanks for the post Chalhov.
Actually though advertisers are important, they will also not advertise if TRPs are low, so ultimately viewers become most important.

Why 3 it is my nature that if I do something I complete that to its logical or illogical end.😆 I started watching this serial mid last year after a gap of 25 years and liked it very much initially so will see it to the end. what I stopped was getting emotionally hurt 😊 with the tracks and just watched with interest the main leads specially Radhika and Dev in that order but felt bad with both their character going bad and felt good when they were given good story and dialogues.I am watching how the CVs develop and spoil a story serial but will watch to the end .
This leap whether it has any logic or not or fizzle out.Whether they show a proper relation between Dev and fake wife or some medical condition and that being in name only marriage and relevant to the pure love of RaDEv or not. I have also read that Deccancronicle item when it was published. But why I put this article on the forum was that viewers have every right to send their thoughts to the production houses and as Misti has given in her post above . They cannot make any sort of stories at their whim and fancy and destroy a good story without expecting a protest from the viewer and he is the sole person for whom they r doing all thisThis is a massmedia where lot of people watch and finally they have to reasonably give in to the viewer I lot of discussion was there on the forum
