People always have difficulty accepting paradigm shifts. Just because there is a set of norms to write a fiction doesn't mean you have congest urself inside those boundaries. Also I don't see anything wrong with him choosing to write about 9/11. He says there are lot of empty sheets that have copy-pasted useless monologues but it gave me the visual feel of Thomas Sr.'s notebook. It might not help with the story but i liked how i felt when i read them.

In my opinion, everything in the book can be justified... It isn't just a pseudo mish-mash... Everything conveys something, and I was impressed... more by the words of the book and the characters, but I didn't see the point of being critical about the other devices that the author has chosen to employ.

I agree.

Basically he didn't like Foer's style of writing and its hard for him to accept that a 9 yr old can be so intelligent.

Only one thing that bothered me was that an eight year old could buy a phone and travel in cabs without parental guidance because as far as i know it is not how it works here. I don't know if NYC goes easy on kids' rules.

B.) Mr. Black writes a card for every person, and gives it a sub-title. If you reach that part, tell me what do you think about his sub-title for Oskar's card...

A) I haven't come across any autistic person IRL, so I don't know much except for watching some fictional autistic characters in TV. He does have some personality traits that may or may not differ from a normal 9yr old. He asks questions that are socially awkward and repeats them even after his mom tries to stop him, he is scared of getting into trains that go underground and also scared of sailing on boats. He thinks they are potential targets but I don't know whether he is paranoid in general or coz of the trauma.

A.) No these are clear signs of autism: He is definitively intelligent, is socially awkward (and doesn't stop on being stopped!), is the target of bullies, and has his eccentricities... I strongly suspect that that is what the author wanted to portray... Autism comes in a wide spectrum, so there is definitely a mild hint that Oskar is not all "normal"...

B.) I think... the "son" meant more for the mother's love than Mr. Black's love for Oskar or Oskar's love for his father... In the climax, this is just an assurance from the author that the love of his mother defined him more than anything else... (At least this is how I interpreted it... which was different from how the others did... I'd like to hear your opinion...)

Did you find anything on the bombing of Dresden... I've never been there, but I heard that they are still restoring what was damaged...
