Abhi and Nikki kissed each other like two parched souls. After a while Abhimanyu breaks the kiss and starts pacing the room, his hand raking his hair. Nikki is confused by his sudden change in mood.
"Abhi….what?" she asks, placing her hand gently on his arm.
"Nikki….I….I don't know" he sighs and sits on the chair in the room. Nikki sits on her knees in front of him, takes his face in her hands and looks into his eyes tenderly. His eyes were pools of pain and regret.
"No….please….don't…don't do this to me" she gets up abruptly, understanding the fact that the man who was so madly in love with her was going to hide behind some guilt he carried in his heart. She didn't want to lose him again and she believed that there was nothing that he could have ever done to hurt her and he was not letting the guilt screen the man she so loved.
"Nikki" he says her name in a tortured whisper, "You don't know what I" he tries to explain but Nikki places her hands on her ear.
"Stop….stop it….I don't know why you keep saying that you hurt me…..are you the reason for my accident? Did you bang into my car? If not….then stop saying that you are responsible" she turns to face him and tells him, tears threatening to fall out of her big beautiful eyes.
"Nikki" he stands up and takes her by her arms, "I am the cause of your accident…I am….I fought with you and you left Sanjeevani furious with me ……that is when you met with the accident" he confesses to her and waits for her to hate him, get angry at him and react to his statement. He knew he deserved it. Oh God…..how much he deserved it.
"So?" she asks as if all he had said didn't matter to her.
"You expect me to hate you? Then listen Dr. Abhimanyu Modi….I don't…..I can't hate you….I love you…..we fought….must have been both our faults…I don't care…..I have you now….I won't lose you" she tells him, cupping his face gently and her eyes reflecting each and every word she was saying.
"This time it was my fault…..I almost got you killed Nikki…..no wonder you don't remember me…..it's not your" Nikki stands on the tip of her toes and places her mouth on his to shut him up. Instinctively, Abhi's hands go to her waist and pull her closer. When he realizes what he is doing, he tries to break the kiss but Nikki deepens it and he forgets to fight.
Her in his arms was what he wanted and he could not fight with it anymore. He had waited for so long for her to remember him but she hadn't. Instead she had fallen headlong in love with him again, this time without the shadow of misunderstandings. She made him a happy man and he was losing the resolve to hold out till her memory came back.
When they break the kiss , Nikita looks at him, " Abhi….let's forget the past….please…..I want us to live in the present….Abhi…..I want to make new memories to remember you…..please" she implores to the man she loved and did not want him to hide behind the man who ran away from her.
"You won't forgive me when you remember" he tells her with a smile which doesn't reach his eyes.
"I forgive you…..you need to forgive yourself Abhi" she tells him and he looks at the truth in her eyes.
He did need to forgive himself he realized, she had forgotten his biting words but when he had told her that he was the cause of her accident, she had forgiven him that too. The weight he had been carrying since the day he had seen her in the hospital bed, lifted from his heart and a smile lit up his face.
"Nikki….sweetheart….you are the best thing that has ever happened to me…..I love you" he hugs her and a smile lights Nikki's face too.
"Welcome back to me Abhi" she whispers softly in his ears and he kisses the woman he loved with all the passion and love he had for her.
"We should go" Nikki tells him when she comes up for air for the nth time.
"Why?" he asks, his voice husky, eyes hooded and his finger gently touching the length of her neck.
"Abhi….we are in a party" she chides him lovingly and tries to get out of his grasp.
"No one is missing us" he tells her, moving in to steal another kiss.
"Abhi….stop" Nikki pushes him and starts towards the door but Abhi is too fast for her. He stands with his back resting on the door and smiles wickedly at her.
"Sweetheart….not so easily" he says, pulling her towards himself, from her waist.
"Please" she says softly, not meeting his eyes.
"Fine" he says and gets away from the door and in her hurry to leave; Nikki doesn't see the mischievous glint in his eyes. When she tries to open the door, he lightly holds her waist and places a kiss on her neck after moving her hair away. Nikki smiles and takes his hand and drags him back to the terrace where the party is in full swing and every couple is dancing in each other's arms.
Abhi looks at Nikki who looks away shyly.
"Want to dance?" he asks her, remembering the last time he had simply pulled her in his arms when she was trying to be a motor mouth. Before Nikki can answer, he pulls her in his arms.
"Abhi……behave" she chides him.
"Next time….last time you only instructed me to ask you before a dance" he winks and Nikki smiles. She could imagine herself doing that. So they had danced before and it was good to know. Finally Dr. Modi was helping her instead of clamming up but she kept her mouth shut as she knew if she thanked him he would stop talking. She rests her head on his shoulder and enjoys the feeling of being in his arms.
This was the first time he had held her in his arms that she hadn't spoilt the moment, fought with him or looked at him with apprehension. As she laid her head against him, Abhi smiled in her hair. It felt good to have her in his arms without the worry about Armaan.
"Love birds..…hello" Armaan's voice cuts in and Nikki and Abhi open their eyes to see that it was only the two of them dancing. The music had finished and the gang was gathered around them, watching interestedly. Nikki tries to get out of his arms but he holds her still. "Abhi" she whispers, telling him with her eyes that everyone was staring.
"Armaan…why am I not surprised" Abhimanyu ignores Nikki and shakes his head at Armaan.
"Arre boss….I am not disturbing you….we were just wondering how you both were dancing without music?" he asks tongue in cheek and the rest of the people burst out laughing and Nikki's blush keeps deepening.
"Abhi please" she begs and instead of letting her go, he pulls her closer and settles her snugly in the crook of his arm.
"Well…..Dr. Malik…..to ask this question you switched off the music …right?" Abhi's perceptive gaze doesn't miss the glint of mischief in his eyes and Armaan laughs at having been caught.
"So?" Armaan asks and Abhi raises his eyebrow.
"So what?" he asks back.
"You two…..need our blessings or still fighting?" Gaurav jumps in knowing that there was no way Abhimanyu was going to answer Armaan.
Both Abhi and Nikki look at each other, Nikki shyly and he lovingly. That is the only answer the interns need and they jump on Nikki to congratulate her.
Abhi looks towards Armaan to gauge his reaction but sees him sharing a laugh with Gaurav and goes towards them. As soon as they see Abhi stand next to them, both Gaurav and Armaan shut up and look in different directions.
"Care to share?" Abhi asks and as soon as Gaurav is about to open his mouth, Armaan signals him not to say anything, which doesn't go unnoticed by Abhi. His eyes narrow and he looks at Armaan, "What are you up to Dr. Malik?" he asks and Armaan feigns innocence.
"Dr. Modi….I was actually just congratulating Dr. Khanna" he replies, his eyes mischievous.
"What for?" Abhi asks Armaan, not believing him.
"You both will be related soon" Armaan says with a poker face and Abhimanyu looks astonished at Gaurav.
"How?" he asks the handsome doctor.
"Well both of you like the Malhotra sisters" Armaan answers for Gaurav and everything falls into place for Abhimanyu. He had been wondering why Gaurav seemed to care about Nikki so much and had give a different reason to himself for it but was glad that he had been wrong. "So Dr. Khanna you helped Nikki?" he asked the other doctor smiling but the slow irritation in his eyes wasn't well hidden.
"He didn't need to do much to push the right buttons" Armaan mumbles under his breath and Gaurav hides a smile but signals Armaan to get lost before his boss exploded.
"With you around Dr. Malik, nothing much needs to be done….you take charge" Abhi replies and Armaan gives a wary smile and turns away on a pretext.
"Abhimanyu" Gaurav starts and Abhimanyu looks at him an eyebrow raised, "I hope we are fine….and you won't take my helping Nikita personally" and Abhimanyu smiles a little.
"Gaurav….you have been a great help….and I know Nikki must have pestered you" he replies perceptively and the two men shake hands over no hard feelings.
The party comes to an end and when Nikki goes to wish Abhi goodbye, he tells her that he will drop her home as Gaurav and Pari are headed in a different direction.
In the car, there is silence between the two. Nikki is shy and Abhi is pondering over her having used Gaurav and how to tease her for doing what she did.
"You should have not used Gaurav Nikki" he says straight faced and Nikki's color drains.
"I….Abhi…he…."she stammers and Abhi is bursting with laughter but he doesn't want to let it go so easily.
"I am insulted" he says and doesn't look at her.
"I didn't meant that….but …you…you always stepped away from me….I didn't know what you felt….you confused me" Nikki starts explaining and Abhi bellows with laughter. Nikki is stunned and looks at him open-mouthed. When she realizes that he was teasing her, she makes a face and turns away. He stops at her house and opens the door for her and starts to walk away in a huff when he catches her hand and pulls her to him, leaning against the car.
"No goodnight kiss for me?" he asks in her ear and holds her around the waist.
"Let go…..you don't deserve it" she tries to remain angry with him but her resolve is weakening by the second in his arms.
"Really…..let's have it and see if I don't "he comes tantalizingly close to her and Nikki's eyes close.
"Goodnight" he whispers, barely brushing his lips with hers and leaves her and she looks at him confused. She blinks her eyes and Abhi's lips twist into a smile.
"Goodnight" she whispers, her eyes clouded with confusion and need and she bites her lips and turns towards her house. She enters the house and closes the door, without looking back when her mother appears.
"How was the party Nikki?" she asks and Nikki tells her shortly that she really enjoyed it. Her mother asks her a few questions and she answers absent mindedly, still wondering why Abhi hadn't kissed her goodnight. Was he still mad at her about Gaurav? She hoped not. She is snapped out of her reverie by the doorbell and heads to check who it is while her mother bids her goodnight.
"Abhi" she utters surprised to see him standing there. A smile lights her face and he comes close and places a kiss on her lips. She looks at him surprised.
"I forgot that….. and you forgot this" he hands her her phone and disappears leaving her heart surging with joy.
The next day is busy at Sanjeevani for Nikki, she pulling a few extra hours of duty to cover what she had forgotten. Abhi and she have lunch together but the next few days pass in a rush too with a few stolen moments together. The day she is off duty, her body begs to sleep and she sleeps through the day but in the evening, Armaan comes home and tells her to get ready. She does so but he refuses to divulge where they were going.
Her mother was on her short trip to Delhi so Nikki is more than happy to spend the evening with her friends. This time her mother had been secretive and thrilled to go to Delhi. She didn't bother to find out but was curious when her father started calling her mother and both talked for hours. She shut her mind to it and accompanied Armaan to the party.
He takes her to a hotel and tells her that he was going to give Riddhima a surprise as she had topped the results for the exams. Nikki smiles and helps him set up the surprise and the best friends catch up with each other while decorating the pool area which he had reserved for the party.
"Nikki….I am sorry" Armaan takes her hand, when they are sitting after the decoration is done. Nikki looks at him surprised.
"What for Armaan?" she asks.
"For landing you in this situation Nikki….it is my entire fault" he says, sharing his guilt.
"But Abhi…he said it's his fault….now you say it's yours….I don't" she wrings her hands helplessly.
"Well yeah….him and me" Armaan smiles humorlessly and tells her how they had fought and how Nikki was torn between the two.
"But why would you do that? He loves me so much….couldn't you see?" she asks incredulously but before Armaan can answer, the gang starts to arrive and he suddenly gets busy leaving the conversation in the middle.
Nikki congratulates Riddhima who thanks her and then her cell rings and she answers happily as she sees the call is from Abhi.
"Hey sweetheart….congrats" he tells her, his tone proud.
"For what Abhi?" she asks and he tells her that though Riddhima topped, Nikki had taken the second place and that made him proud of her achievement. Nikki smiles at that and her heart aches to be with him.
"Can't you come here Abhi?" she asks and he tells her that he didn't want to interrupt the fun she and her friends were having. She cajoles him and he finally agrees to stop by. Happily she cuts the phone, waiting for him to arrive.
The gang starts to have fun and start teasing each other by throwing water from the pool or threatening each other to push them into the pool. Nikki is threatened by Armaan, who takes her to the corner and almost pushes her to the pool, holding her by her arms.
"Armaan…no…don't …it's not funny" she warns.
"You called the boss here….you deserve it" he teases and Nikki tries to lie her way out. He pulls her towards him laughing and Nikki hits him hard but Armaan laughs at her.
"Stupid" she pushes him and Armaan bangs into Abhimanyu who had just come in and was walking towards Nikki. The sudden push by Armaan misbalances Abhimanyu a little and he is about to fall into water when Armaan holds him and stops him from landing in the pool.
As Nikki watches this, her face loses color and she sees Armaan pushing Abhimanyu in the pool during Dr. Keerti's wedding.
"Abhi" Nikki screams, "Armaan don't please…..I called him here" she says and everyone looks at her stunned.
"Please Armaan No" she keeps repeating and Abhimanyu rushes to her side.
"Nikki are you ok?" he asks the girl who hugs him tightly.
"I…I saw Ar…Armaan pushing you….water…..why?" she searches his face and then she remembers what happened at the party. Nikki sits down with a thud , closing her eyes and holding her head.
The argument Abhi and Armaan had, how she had tried to stop their match, how Armaan had misunderstood them, how she had never spoken about her feelings, how she had gone to meet Abhi at the pool side, everything comes rushing back to her.
"Nikki…..what's wrong?" the others ask rushing to her side.
"Nikki….tell us …...please" Abhimanyu pats her back soothingly and hears her sob.
"Why are you crying?" he asks her gently and she looks at him and says, "Sorry Abhi" her eyes begging forgiveness.
"What for Nikki?" he asks puzzled.
"I didn't tell Armaan that I loved you when he was insulting you" she replies and Abhi looks at her shocked. Nikki had remembered. Armaan looks at her uncomfortably and so does the rest of the gang.
"Nikki…..what do you remember?" Abhi asks, his heart beating fast.
"The fight…..I wanted to speak up Abhi….I did….but I was confused" she tells him, her tears overflowing.
"I know that Nikki…..I know…It's Ok" he tells her.
She turns to Armaan and tells him how nice Abhi had been to her and she was sorry that she hadn't been upfront with him. Armaan shakes his head sadly but tells her that he knew now and he was sorry for his actions but he was simply trying to protect her.
Abhimanyu nods his understanding and tells her that it would be better if she went home and rested. Nikki agrees and Abhi proceeds to drop her home.
"I hope you forgive me" Nikki asks when they are alone.
"Nikki…..I didn't ….but now I do…..I know now why you were confused and why you didn't want to say anything in front of Armaan…..but I didn't at that time" he tells her honestly and she nods understanding. There is silence and when they reach her house, Nikki is about to get out when Abhimanyu's slow voice stops her.
"I insulted you Nikki….at every given opportunity" and she looks at him and stops to listen.
"You did apologize but I was extremely angry" he says and her hand slowly takes his in hers.
"You had the right to be" she says.
"No….I should have heard you" he shakes his hand, wiser with the experience.
"Now you do" she smiles.
"Nikki…..there are many other unpleasant memories" he tells her and she nods.
"Those memories…..they got you to me….I wouldn't change them" she says.
"You would…if you remembered" he replies negating her positive approach.
"We will deal with it when I remember….but I promise you….nothing can make me hate you….ever" she says and he walks her to the door.
As she opens the door, her mother appears."Nikki…where were you?" she asks and then looks at Abhimanyu none too pleased.
"When did you come Mumma?" she asks.
"A few hours ago" she replies and Abhi tells her that Nikki needed to rest so he was dropping her home and heads out.
"Why is he the one who always drops you? Isn't Armaan your friend and he your boss?" her mother asks.
"Yes he is my boss……Armaan was busy" she replies, not wanting to explain to her mother.
"What happened? Why do you need rest?" her mother asks.
"Nothing Ma….just a little headache and she goes into her room to rest.
The next day her mother asks her to take off for the next day. "I can't ma….I have work" Nikki refuses.
"This is important too….your father and I have decided something for you" she says which stops Nikki in her tracks.
"Excuse me? You and Papa…..really….why did you have to bother so suddenly?" she asks, irritated by their sudden interest in her life.
"Nikita…..we are your parents ok…..not your enemies…..we do care and have the right for the same" her mother replies, her tone a bit curt.
"I know who you are…..but you have no right to decide anything for me…thanks but no thanks" she replies.
"Don't take that attitude with me Nikita" her mother rebukes.
"Mumma….please leave me alone….I am busy" she tries to walk off but her mother is not having any of it.
"Look Nikki…..we have promised someone….please take the day off" she requests.
"Promised? Who? What?" she asks confused.
"Someone is coming to meet you….so we need you at home" her mother smiles proudly.
"Meet me? Who?"she frowns.
"Abhay Malik" she answers.
"Armaan's cousin?" she asks surprised and her mother nods.
"Why?" she asks.
"For marriage "is her answer and Nikki looks at her as if she had grown another head.
"Whose?" she asks cautiously still not believing her ears.
"You….of course…..they know you well….he is a well to do businessman….and he has agreed to talk to you….I promised them your hand" she replies and Nikki's temper surges.
"Promised….what right do you have? I am not some stupid business deal….you get it?" she screams and runs out.
