I don't know in interior villages of either states, but I guess everyone has to learn Hindi as one of the languages to pass 10th std board exams in all the 3 states.
About Tamil Nadu, it is an unfortunate situation. People probably don't want to learn another language, because it hurts their ego. The general attitude of the anti-Hindi people is - 'Why should I learn that language just because he is not able to understand what I say? Let him learn my language' . And the numerous Hindi movies mocking at Tamilians doesn't help the cause either.
But if that's the case, they shouldn't have bothered to learn English as well...it is not our language. But the same guy in Tamil Nadu (sorry if I unintentionally hurt someone) learnt English when it was imposed by the British. And now how useful it is proving to be...we are able to compete with the rest of the world because we know English.
Similarly, those who are against Hindi should understand that one may not be staying in one's own state forever...s/he may have to move to some other state and at that time, the knowledge of Hindi will prove useful. No one can impose Hindi on anyone...just make it optional...those who want to benefit will learn. Those who don't want - its their problem.
And yeah....I know lot of people learning French, German, Spanish and what-not. Those people should be forced to learn Hindi first and then learn foreign languages.

have anyone forced those people to learn French, German, Spanish and what-not. they learn it with their own will n wish..... Then why shld a language hindi be forced on them....

This is the rather unfortunate problem in India as I said...people are ok with learning foreign languages in India, but don't want to put in the same effort to learn an Indian language, which is largely used in our own country. That's why I say learn Hindi first and then learn French or German.
Other countries have a common language, why not India too? And yeah...you may ask why Hindi and why not Tamil....it is a perfectly logical question. But learning Hindi causes difficulty to a lesser percentage of the population, whereas learning Tamil causes difficulty to a larger percentage of people.
And about English...definitely everyone in India should learn English too because it is the main language of communication with the rest of the world. We are not an isolated country to avoid English completely.

u can always promote hindi...............but it shld never be imposed on people. That is totally wrong, esp when a portion of the population is not intrested in it. GOI have so many schemes to promote hindi......people celebrate hindi saptah.......... but Hindi as a language shld not be forced, just bcos hindi speaking people will find it eazy in other states.
Further u say that, everyone in India shld learn english........so we have English as a common language. People can learn their regional language too....then why shld a third language be imposed..........isn't it an un-necessary burden.....

India is unique...we have several languages and even different dialects within the same language. Deciding one common national language will always be a problem.
English should be learnt...because it is the main language of official communication with the rest of the world, so we cannot shut it out. English is here to stay.
But definitely we cannot ignore our own languages. We cannot declare English as our National language, because it is after all, a foreign language which not symbolise our culture.
Learning a third language - Hindi will be useful in integrating our country. In my first post, I never said force Hindi on everyone(except the French and german learning students). We must not close our eyes to the fact that we need a common Indian language in our country. We are fighting among ourselves in the name of language. We must learn to respect the other person's language, but definitely need one common language.
We are electing a PM thru elections...not everyone in the country has voted for him. Many have voted against him and his party. His party has suffered severe losses in some states. But he is still the PM because majority of the of the other states have accepted him.
The same principle applies to Hindi. It will cause some difficulty, but it is definitely worth the effort in the long run.

@visrom:-Yes,I very well understand that India has many languages but there should be a common language which helps us converse with one another disregarding the regional boundaries of language..Yes,every Russian knows the language of Russia and they are proud about that then why shouldn't we be proud of Hindi which is the primary official language and had all the chances of becoming a national language if some people didn't oppose to it?As simple as that..Now,like I said..Wouldn't it be difficult to converse with someone who doesn't know any common language?
And Hyderabad has a lot of Hindi influence and that's why every auto-driver speaks in it..If other states were also developed in such a way then they would start speaking to and it would make conversing easy!

@lakshmim_84:-Really?Every auto driver doesn't speak in English coz I myself had been to Bangalore and unfortunately we got hold of an auto driver who doesn't speak English,I guess..!😆
And once again Bangalore is not Karnataka..What about the other regions in Karnataka which are not as developed as Bangalore?

Wehave been living more than 60yrs without a national language....n it has not created any problem in the unity of the country or integration of the people............. so where is the problem, for which the solution is having a common language.
the only time when the language issue was raised n it was decided to make hindi as the national language, the unity of the country suffered.

@MsMagixX i have never said, that every auto driver knows english.i have used the term almost every......... If ur only concern for having one common language, is for everyone to have eazy communication, then i feel english wld be a better candidate....... after all its an universal language....

English which is not even our own?
It is universal but it is NOT Indian! As simple as that..Yes,English is an universal language with lotsa demand but that doesn't take away credit from the fact that it's regarded secondary in our country..Many countries also speak English but, they have their own common language..Why shouldn't we?

How did u classify hindi as our own........Sanskrit is a language of India, but hindi is not...........it developed as a result of the muslim rule in India... So hindi is as foreign as english..... English became popular in India cos of britishers n hindi became popular cos of the sultanates of Delhi........

So if u can't accept english as a common language cos it is not indian, then Hindi also cannot be accepted cos it is not Indian.

Correction correction..This is what I found..Hindi is very much our own and is developed from Sanskrit which is again OUR VERY OWN!(Hindi(Although,a Persian word)might have become popular due to the various invasions but,it is still our very own..U can't deny that!😉)

"Sanskrit (meaning refined or perfected) was brought to India from the north-east in approximately the 2nd millennium BC and eventually gave rise to the Prakrit (natural or common) languages. These in turn gave rise to the modern Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Nepali and Sinhalese."

Edit:-Extra Information:-
Hindi (Devanagari: ?????? or ?????, IAST: Hindi, IPA: ['??ndi?] is the name given to an Indo-Aryan language, or a dialect continuum of languages, spoken in northern and central India (the "Hindi belt").
