Chapter 79
Prem was crestfallen and lay in bed cursing the balcony, the gutter and everything else he had to climb.
Fari bumped into Heer out in the corridor. "Heeriye, stay with Prem na! Take him some food, and then give him the painkillers.
"Fine" Heer said matter of factly and went downstairs. She served Prem some food and took it up with some water.
Prem was for once happier to see Heer than the food. "Oh you going to feed me?"
"No. Your legs are sprained, arms and hands are ok." She arranged the plate on top of a pillow on his lap. "Ok eat, I'll get your meds." Off she went again, leaving Prem to chew on the food.
Again Fari was in the corridor and Heer said," You don't have to check on us."
"No Heeriye, it's not what you think. You should stay with him tonight."
Heer's eyes narrowed suspiciously, "Why?"
Because he needs someone who'll check on him often. None of the guys here will be awake more than 5 minutes after they hit the pillow, so no use."
Heer shook her head at Fari and went to get a few things.
Ten minutes later she went back to the ahem room, with Prem's meds and a book to read. She got Prem a finger bowl to wash his hands and a towel to wipe. Then she gave him the meds.
"So bedtime stories now?" Prem couldn't believe his luck. Heer was going to stay with him. Hitler must still be in shock after his fall.
"It's historical fiction. Based on Mary Queen of Scots." Heer lay down on the other side of the bed, switched the reading lamp on and started to read.
Prem gave up talking for a while, just happy that Heer was right there next to him. He sighed contentedly.
Heer turned a page.
"If there are any romantic bits in there, can you read it out loud?" Prem couldn't resist.
"Prem, go to sleep."
"Ok can you at least hold my hand?"
"Ok, but will you promise to sleep?" Heer gave him her left hand. Prem took it in his, admired the ring and then curled his fingers through hers.
Another few minutes and Heer needed to turn the page, but she thought it better to just wait till he fell asleep. She didn't have to wait long. He was soon breathing long and deep. She turned to look at him. He looked like an angel again. She gently got her hand out of his, closed her book and watched him till she fell asleep.
Heer slept well for the first time in months.
