PART 13The way to their home was filled with silence. They reached home and went to their room. Preet noticed that sadness was back on Meher's face. Seeing her sad was more painful for him than seeing Harman, her love. He wondered if this is how love felt. He put his feelings aside for a moment and went towards Meher who was taking off her jewellery near the dressing table. He looked at her reflection in the mirror. She was looking very beautiful but was missing her smile. She was too lost in her thoughts that she didn't notice Preet was standing behind her.
Preet: Meher(Meher looked up and saw Preet in the mirror) are you ok?
Meher(sad): I am fine Preet.
Preet: tumhare chehre se to aisa nahi lag raha(Meher lowered her eyes in guilt. He was right. She was not fine. She just met Harman, her love. She saw so much pain in his eyes and that pain was haunting her)
Preet: Meher main tumhara dost hun na to please tum mujhse share ker sakti ho.(he waited for her to say something but she didnt so he continued) Main jaanta hun aj Harman ko dekh ker tumhe acha nahi laga. (stumbling) tumse aik baat pooch sakta hun?
Meher:haan
Preet(taking a deep breath): kya tumhe pachtawa hai tumne mujhse shaadi kari?(he didnt know why he asked this question. maybe he wanted to know if she wanted to be with Harman)
Meher(she looked at Preet in surprise. She wondered why he was asking this question. He had a right to ask this question she thought. He was her husband. A truth she could not avoid. He is very nice man she thought. He married her even after knowing she was in love with someone else but he claimed he just wanted to make her happy and nothing else. He had made her happy in such a short time. He was there when she needed him. He was helping with Heer didi's matter. He brought a smile not just on her face, but also on her parents face and her sister's. He was different from Harman. Harman only made her happy. Preet made her happy along with her family. He was also not like most the man these days. He was very patient, unlike Harman. He was giving her all the time to accept their relation and move on. But did she want to move on? would she be able to move on? she asked herself. One thing was for sure that she doesn't regret marrying him. If she had married Harman, then, that would have been her biggest mistake. Her relation would have ended up like Heer didi's too. She didnt want that. Her parents and Harman would have suffered the most if that had happened. The decision she made was right and it seemed even more right because she was married to Preet. She looked at him. She saw sadness on his face for the first time. She had always seen him smiling but right now he was not smiling. for some reason, she wanted to make him happy too just like he made her happy. She smiled at him and answered) Preet mujhe koi pachtawa nahi.
Preet(he smiled back at her. He was happy to hear this and he was happier to see her smiling): Meher, I am always here for you. Tumhe kabhi bhi meri zaroorat ho to please mujhse kehte hue ghabrana mat.
Meher(smiled and looked down): Thanks.
Preet(he extended his hand and hesitantly rested it on her shoulder): aur Meher, fiqr mat karo, Harman theek ho jayega. (Meher was startled by his touch on her shoulder. However, It gave her an unknowing peace and assurance that everything will be alright. Meher smiled weakly and shyly.) Chalo khana khanay chaltay hain. Sab wait ker rahay hongay.
Preet and Meher left for dinner.After the dinner Preet went to his room and started to work on his project while Meher was helping with the kitchen.
Meher was putting away the leftovers in the fridge. She closed the fridge door and was shocked, or scared, to see Tannu standing there. She was not expecting Tannu, or anyone, at this time in the kitchen.
Meher: Tannu! tumne to mujhe dara dia.
Tannu(she had same expressionless face. it was rather scary): itni bari ho ker app aik bachi se darti hain! khair. app ko pata hai maine app ko kitna miss kia. app kal ghar par nahi thin aur aj bhi app nahi thin.(Yesterday Meher was at her parent's house. When she came back Tannu was already asleep. The next morning, Tannu was already gone to school before Meher woke up. When Tannu returned from school, Meher was gone for shopping. so Tannu and Meher didn't get a chance to meet each other)
Meher: woh kal main apni maa se milne gayi thi aur aj shopping ke liye.
Tannu: app ne kya shopping ki?
Meher: woh kuch kapray liye hai.
Tannu: mujhe dekhne hai!
Meher(confused): abhi?
Tannu: Haan
Meher: ok chalo (Meher and Tannu went to Meher's room.Meher didnt want to say no to Tannu as she was scared of Tannu)
Meher and Tannu entered the room. Preet was surprised to see Tannu with Meher. He knew Tannu never got along with anyone but she was getting along with Meher. She must really like Meher he thought. Preet went back to his work when Tannu gave him an angry glare. Meher noticed this and tried to control her laughter since she was scared of Tannu too.
Meher showed Tannu all her clothes and Tannu was very happy to see them. she liked all of them. She insisted Meher to try them on so Meher did. Preet was enjoying this as much as Tannu. He was looking at Meher from the corner of his eyes everytime she would come out of the washroom wearing a different dress. He liked all of them but he liked Meher the most in the blue one as blue was his favourite colour. It looked even better on Meher he thought. He went back to his work when Tannu left the room. He didnt want Meher to catch him looking at her.
Meher was putting away her new cloths after Tannu left. Preet received a phone call from someone and started shouting suddenly. Meher was shocked and looked at Preet to see what happened.
Preet(very angry): aray aise kaisay ho sakta hai Mr. Gupta! app jaantay hai na project ke is step par lawyer ka hona bhi kitna zaroori hai!
Meher kept looking at him. She knew he was talking to some Mr. Gupta about some project.
Preet(still very angry): unko is waqt kisne chutti di hai?… app ko nahi pata?… to kis ko pata hai?…main office do din naa aaon to yeh haal hota hai!…shaadi? shaadi meri thi na to main busy tha.app ki to nahi thi na.app logon ko to dehaan daina chahiye tha na. kya maine app sab logon ko isliye hire kia hua hai.itne irresponsible ho jatay hai app log!app log bachay to nahi ke main haath pakar ker chalaon sab ko…please app lawyer ko contact kerne ki koshish kerte rahay aur jaisay hi contact ho mujhe inform karain.
Preet put his phone down on the table and threw the pen, he had in his hand, on the floor. He sat in his chair and hid his face in his hands. Meher saw all this. She was sure that he was having some problem with office work. She went close to him thinking maybe he needed her. She stopped and thought how she could go to him. But she assured herself that she was just his friend and all friends should help their friends in need. So she went close to him.
Meher(standing near Preet): Preet, kya hua? sab theek to hai?
Preet(he stands up and pushes the chair on the side in anger): kya theek hai Meher. kuch theek nahi. main kuch din ke liye office nahi gaya to in logon ne project par dehaan hi nahi dia. kitna important project hai yeh hamaray liye. aur lawyer sahab chutti par chalay gayay!
Meher: Preet please relax. tum betho please. (Preet looked at her) Please!(Preet sat down. Meher got a glass of water from her night table and gave it to him. He drank it looking at her confusingly. To his surprise, the glass of water did calm him down a bit)
Meher: Preet ab ghussa honay se faida nahi. tum shaant ho ker is problem ka solution nikaalnay ki koshish karo.
Preet(calming down): Meher main itni jaldi aik acha lawyer kaha se launga. aur phir saari details bhi wohi lawyer handle ker raha tha.
Before Meher could say anything, Preet got another phone call.
Preet: kya?…lawyer ko wapis anay ki flight nahi mila rahi?…just great! ab kya hoga?…acha app ka contact hua lawyer se?..mujhe uska phone number dain app…ok thanks…bye
Meher: kya hua Preet?
Preet: lawyer ko wapsi ki flight nahi mil rahi.kuch din baad ki mili hai aur hamain lawyer ki abhi zaroorat hai. i dont know what to do Meher.
Meher(thinks of an idea): Preet aik idea hai!
Preet(looks at her questioningly): kya?
Meher: Well, tumhe jo kaam hai woh tum ker saktay ho computer par live conference ker ke lawyer ke saath.
Preet: not a bad idea..laikin, Meher, maine MBA kia hai.mujhe law ke baray itna ziada nahi pata hai. jo baatain lawyer kahega aur jo project files main hai woh mere samajh main nahi aaya to?
Meher(suddenly speaks): I am a lawyer. I will help you!
Preet(looks at her and smiles): Yes! you are a lawyer. tum meri help ker sakti ho! Thank you so much Meher. Chalo soo jao raat bauhat ho gayi. hum yeh sara matter subah dekh laingay office main.
Meher(confused): office?
Preet: Haan Meher office. tum yeh to nahi samajh rahi thi na ke hum poora project ghar par beth ker karaingay?
Meher(embarrassed because she was thinking that): nahi. woh..main kaisay office jaa sakti hun?
Preet: kyun nahi jaa sakti?
Meher: mera matlab ghar ke kaam kaun karega aur Maa aur Bauji kya kahaingay?
Preet(smiles): Meher ghar ke kaam kerne ke liye naukar hai. Mere to samajh nahi ata tum itna kaam kyun kerti ho jab itne nauker hai. aur Maa Bauji bilkul mana nahi karaingay. Kulraj di bhi office jaati thi jab tak unke bachay nahi hue. jab unhonay ne apni beti ko mana nahi kia to tumhe kyun karaingay?
Meher: Preet woh unki beti hain, main unki bahu hun.
Preet: Meher tum bhi unki beti ho (Meher looked at him in surprise. She felt very happy to know that her in-laws thought of her as their daughter) so dont worry about maa and bauji. tumhe to koi problem nahi na? I would like it if you help us.ya phir agar um kahin aur karma kerna chaho to woh bhi ker sakti ho.
Meher(smiled): I would be glad to help you Preet.
Preet: thanks Meher!(Meher smiled)
Meher: is main thanks ki kya baat? itna to ker sakti hun. biwi hun tumhari!(she suddendly stopped and realized what she said. She didnt know how this came out of her mouth. She looked at Preet who just smiled at her. He was glad that she has accepted the fact that she is his wife.)
Preet and Meher went to bed after deciding that Meher would join Preet in the office from tomorrow. They both laid down on the bed cautiously staying on their sides. Preet was feeling less stressed and went to sleep peacefully. Meher looked over to Preet. She smiled when she saw a smile on his innocent face. This was the first time she was looking at him like that. She remembered when she asked Harman if she could work after their marriage. He told her a big no. He told her that woman were suppose to work at home and man work at office. She felt disgraceful by his comment but she didnt argue with him. Today, she saw how Preet thinks of woman, not just her. He had a lot of respect for women. She had seen him showing respect to his maa, his sister, her maa, heer didi, and herself. He didnt think of woman any less than man and this quality of his impressed Meher. She had a lot of respect for Preet.
Next morning, Meher woke up before Preet as always. She got ready and prepared breakfast for everyone. Preet also arrived at the dining table all ready. The whole family was having breakfast together.
Preet(while eating): Maa Bauji, aj se Meher mere saath office jayegi(the whole family looked at him. Meher looked at Preet nervously and he gave her a smile)
Maa(happy): yeh to bauhat achi baat hai. (Meher sighs in relief) waisay bhi sara din Meher ghar main bore ho jaati hai. tere saath waqt bitanay ka bhi mauqa milega usay.
Bauji: haan. ab yeh tera haath batayegi aur main thora aaram karunga (looks at savitri and winks which Preet notices)
Preet(grinning): oyeee hoyeee!! Breakfast table par romance shomance!!
Bauji(he gets up and goes to beat up Preet): bataon main tujhe!(he starts slapping him while Preet protects himself. The whole family laughs at this event, which occurs frequently in the house)
Maa: aray choriye na usay. uski biwi ke samnay usay maar rahay hai! (Meher tries to control her laughter)
Bauji: nahi, aj main isay nahi chorunga!
Kuldi(laughing): Bauji becharay ko chor dain(Bauji looks at everyone and they all tell him to leave him. Preet always got everyone on his side by showing his innocent face) aur Preet beta Meher tere saath office jayegi? Office main romance shomance!!(the whole family laughed very loudly at this while Preet and Meher turned red.Meher kept her eyes down and her cheeks were red. Preet looked at her and knew she was feeling uncomfortable and shy because of this comment)
Preet(gets up): nahi, aisi baat nahi...Woh..woh hum late ho rahay hai.chalay Meher?
Meher(she looks up and gets up): ha..haan.
They both leave for the office while the family laughs behind them.
