The detective stories of Edgar Allen Poe "The Murder in Rue Morgue" and Arthur Conan Doyle "The Scandal of Bohemia" show how members of their respective society behave in their time period. When something is considered an anomaly, various characters like the Auguste Dupin and Sherlock Holmes clean the mess of society and make everything better for them. The two detectives in the stories are considered "cleaners" for their respective clients and society in general. For Sherlock Holmes, he is simply cleaning the mess of Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigismond von Ormsteinn, who is the future king of Bohemia trying to cover his affair before his wealthy marriage happens. Dupin was trying to solve the murders in Rue Morgue, even though he had no obligation and he was not a professional detective. Society can not be disturbed by any odd anomalies, for anything that upsets the delicate, mundane existence of the peaceful society must be stamped out. The murders and the supposed affair would have ruined the delicate order, thus both of these detectives decide to intervene and restore society to its proper setting. The detectives in their respective stories are not searching for actual justice, but rather to pique their own interest. Both of these detectives are responsible to repair society's mistakes. The detective is like a professional technician, and society is like the faulty machine that must be repaired constantly.

"The Scandal of Bohemia" is a great example of how the detective discovers any odd abnormalities within them and the society is trying to stamp it out. The King of Bohemia represents society in general, for he is a powerful and influential member and is trying to cover something that is out of the ordinary, which can destroy his perfect life. He is about to enter a prosperous marriage, but he asks Sherlock Holmes for help because of an actress named Irene Adler, with whom he once had an affair. The king's fear is that Irene has evidence, such as love letters and photographs, and the king fears the damage that could happen to his proposed marriage if the photographs are revealed. Therefore, he asks Sherlock Holmes and Watson to figure out a way to get rid of the evidences. If any odd anomaly in society occurs, then the detective will try to get rid of it as quickly as possible in order for society to return to its mundane existence, for that what the king of Bohemia is trying to do. He wants this anomaly produced by the photographs taken care of, thus he is paying Sherlock Holmes a large sum of money to "clean" it up. Holmes stages a mini-crisis in the fire in order to lure out the letters and photographs from Irene Adler, however she is proven to be more than a match for Holmes. She represents a rare factor that is not present in society during the time of the novel.

The affair was not the mistake itself, but rather Irene Adler is truly the odd anomaly because she is not in his level when it comes to societal standards. Adler manages to outsmart the great Sherlock Holmes, and that is great accomplishment itself considering the fact that it was rare for the women in that time period to actually be this resourceful and intelligent. It makes her, a modern women of today trapped in the time period of the late 19th century. This story occurs in a time when women were taken to be the inferior figure and are expected to be proper and prim, but according to The king of Bohemia, Adler had "the face of the most beautiful of woman, and the mind of the most resolute of men," (Doyle 14). She proves to have the abilities to overcome the biases of men and makes her stand on top by outwitting one of the smartest men in the novel, which attains his respect and admiration for her. Holmes states that "she is always THE woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominate the whole of her sex" (Doyle 5). This quote explains how women in society do not have many rights when compared to men, despite the social standard of her gender, Irene Adler has proven to overcome the social critique of women of her time and triumphed.

"The Murder in Rue Morgue" explains how Dupin is not a professional detective, but a simple native of Paris who is has interest in reading. Since he is not a professional detective, one must wonder if he is simply trying to solve this case of two murders because of his ego. He decides to investigate the murders in Rue Morgue for his own interest. His interest is not for any huge financial reward that he would have obtained in the end of the story, but rather for his own penchant for the truth and curiosity. He proves to be a resourceful man, for he uses his own cleverness to find out who the actual murderer and from what species is the murderer, because no one can properly identify the language heard when the crime was taking place. He also discovers a single non-human hair found on the crime scene, which further proves his theory. He uses his quick thinking to put an ad on the newspaper for a missing ourang-outang, which enabled him to reach to a conclusion. The actual murderer is an ourang-outang which is way beyond the social norms of committing murders, and they do not know how to hold an ourang-outang to be responsible for the two murders. The social critique in this story can be used to show how to approach the minority, for Ourang-outang is very rare in Paris and police never had to deal with that kind of an issue before.

Like how Irene Adler is considered an anomaly in "The Scandal of Bohemia", one can say the orangutan is the anomaly in "The Murder of Rue Morgue". A killing orangutan is definitely out of society standards, for they manage to have a difficult time trying to solve the case. At the end, Dupin ends up cleaning the case, and at first he was an innocent bystander, but then he himself become part of society stand against anything out of the ordinary.

Society is criticized in these respective stories for not allowing anything out of the ordinary and if unordinary things happen, then they must be corrected immediately. Characters like Irene Adler and the Orangutan rebelling against society's standards and are venturing on their own terms. Holmes and Dupin were assigned as society defenders to overcome the rebellion hypothetically. They were trying to stop Irene Adler and the Orangutan to maintain the mundane peace that society has.
