Heer woke up the next morning when Preeti came rushing into her bedroom, with Rohan and Roshni, screaming at the top of her lungs.
"Massi utto jaldi utto," Preeti called.
Heer sat up in her bed when she heard the voice of her nice. Finally, after she was able to focus her eyes, she saw the three children standing around her bed, one on each side.
"Kya hua?" Heer asked as she quickly got to her feet.
"Veera Bua roh rahi hai," Rohan said.
"Kya?! Veera roh rahi hai?" Heer asked, as she slipped on her robe and slippers about to head out towards Veera's room. "Magar kyun?" The question was just something she was trying to figure out on her own but Roshni answered it for her.
"Kyun ke unhe samaj mein nahin aa raha hai ke woh aaj raath ko kya pehne," Roshni answered.
"Kya?" Heer was confused. When she heard Veera was crying she was sure something had happened with her brothers or father, something terrible. But according to Roshni she was crying over her wardrobe for tonight. What was tonight? That is when everything came back to Heer. Tonight was Veera's engagement. Heer sighed – leave it to Veera to freak out over something trivial.
Heer walked towards Veera's room as Roshni continued to talk.
"Pehle Bua pink pehna chatithi, phir blue, phir green…lekin unke paas koi aachi dress nahin hai. Uppar se jewelry bhi nahin hai," Roshni said.
As Heer got closer to Veera's room she saw first Kulraj come out with an exasperated look on her face. She was followed my Maya who was frowning and muttering something under her breath. Just as Heer stepped into Veera's room her eyes went wide in shock. Every piece of clothing, every jewelry set, every possible set of heels Veera had were all scattered about in the room.
"Chutki yeh saab kya hai?" Heer asked.
But Veera and Meher turned to look at Heer.
"Shukar hai tu aagai!" Meher said. "Aab tu hi isse kuch samja. Bina baath ki rohie jaa rahi hai."
As Meher too stormed out of the room she handed Heer a golden colored dupatta, rather forcefully.
"Chutki?" Heer asked as she rummaged through the pile of clothes on the bed.
"Didi!" Veera rushed to Heer and pulled her into a hug. "Saab kuch khatam hogaya hai! Saab kuch! Aaj raath ke liyeh mere paas ek bhi aachi dress nahin hai!"
"Toh tu roh kyun rahi hai?" Heer asked. "Nahin hai toh koi baath nahin."
"Didi aap yeh kaise keh sakti hai. Aaj meri sagaai hai aur mere paas pehne ke liyeh kuch bhi nahin hai!"
"Toh kause si badi baat hai. Sagaai aaj sham ko hai naa? Usse pehle hum dono jaake tere liyeh ek nayi dress leh aayenge," Heer said as she stroked Veera's hair.
"Kya?" Veera sniffeled.
"Tu bhi naa Chutki, baath ka patangar banati hai!" Heer couldn't help but smile. "Aab tu jaldi se tayar hoja. Nasta karne ke baad hum dono shopping chalte hai. Tik hai naa?"
Veera jumped up and down excitedly as she hugged Heer. "Didi you are the best!"
Downstairs everyone was busy doing various errands in an attempt to make sure that everything went off without a hitch at the ceremony. As Heer sat at the table and helped feed the children she noticed the men were not there. Looking around she saw each of her brothers and her father, either on the phone with vendors or instructing the help about who everything should be done.
"Aaj raath ko koi khami nahin honi chahiye," Harman said.
"Haan bilkul! Humari Chutki ki sagaai hai!" Nihaal joined.
Heer was so happy for her baby sister. This is exactly what she wanted for her. She wanted Veera to be happy in her life but she wanted her family to be happy as well. As happy as she was, there was a small part of her that was jealous. Why hadn't her family been this happy when she told them about Prem. Sure, Prem wasn't the son of a rich business man, but so what. After all, what was more important – the business deal they wanted to make or the fact that he loved Heer with all his heart? Why hadn't Heer been able to experience the happiness that Veera was feeling at this moment? Why hadn't she been allowed to freak out over what to wear at her engagement? Why hadn't her brothers cared enough to make sure her wedding had gone of without a hitch? Did they love her less because she loved Prem?
When her sister-in-laws had found out that Heer and Veera were going shopping for new outfits, they insisted on tagging along. They argued that if they all went together then they could chose the best outfit for Veera – four heads were better than two. Or so they said. Heer and Veera knew the real reason, they wanted to shop for themselves as well. They managed to convince, or rather blackmail, their husbands into giving up their credit cards by saying that it was not like they took their wives shopping. It was funny to see how asking nicely didn't do any good, but the second one wife took a hurt tone all of then handed over their cards.
Heer didn't realize how fast time the went as the four women shopped. The visited countless clothing boutiques, jewelry stores, shoe stores and of course, numerous trips to the food court – courtesy of Kulraj's pregnancy cravings. Heer hadn't had a girls day like that in the past seven years, because there never really was any reason to celebrate. The only reasons the girls finally left the mall was because it was getting late and they still had to go home and get everyone ready.
Once they got home, everyone began to yell and say that they were careless and running late, there was so much to be done. However, the girls ignored them all and just rushed upstairs to get ready. The three bahu's of the family went to first get the kids ready, then their husbands, while Heer rushed to get Veera ready.
When darkness finally fell, the house was simply glowing. There were beautiful arrangements of exotic flowers everywhere. The house was highlighted by the twinkle of thousands of lights and candles. The guests were all mingling, laughing and chatting. The ladke wale had just gotten there and were being greeted by Heer's mother and father as the rest of the family members rushed to greet them as well. From the upstairs balcony, Heer could feel the merriment in the atmosphere. There was only one thing missing – the bride. Heer rushed off to get her before it was too late.
When Heer walked into Veera's room her eyes fell on the reflection in the mirror in front of her – it was a reflection of herself. Only after Veera's incessant pestering did Heer agree to attend the engagement ceremony from up close. Her original plan had been to simply watch from the comfort of the darkness upstairs. However, Veera had made it clear that she wanted her sister next to her during all of her wedding festivities. Heer knew she couldn't say now; after all, her baby sister was a champion when it came to emotional blackmail.
Heer caught her reflection and it shocked her. For the first time in seven years she had put on make up – just simple eyeliner and gloss – but it seemed like too much to her. She refused to give up her white wardrobe, because engagement or no engagement, Heer was still Prem's widow. Heer opted for an off white churidar suit that had full sleeves and very basic thread work on the borders. At the insistence of her mother, she adorned her ears with small diamond studs, but that was it – nothing more.
When Veera saw Heer, she blushed as she asked, "Main kaisi lag rahi hoon Didi?'
"Bohot khubsurat," Heer said, as she placed a kala tika behind her ear. "Kissi ki naazar naa lage. Aab chalein?'"
Heer proceeded down stairs with a stunning looking Veera. Since Manmeet had clearly liked purple on Veera, they had opted for a darker violet shade for the engagement outfit. It was an exquisite ghagra-choli in deep purple with antique gold work. The choli was tailored to fit perfectly, while the skit was full and lush. The dupatta was sheer and draped across Veera elegantly. Her beauty was enhanced by her makeup and ornaments – but most of all by her happiness that shown through in her shyness and her smile.
As they walked down the stairs the sudden lull and hushed murmurs all were aimed towards Veera. Everyone was pleased with what they saw, everyone commented on how beautiful she looked. However, it was the look in Manmeet's eyes when he saw Veera that said it all. His eyes and his shy smile expressed every emotion and thought he was feeling at that moment. The adoration and love he felt shown through. The funny butterfly-like feeling in his stomach was expressed with the slight fidgeting of his hands. However, the moment his eyes met with Veera's, Heer knew he was in love with her. The look in his eyes changed from that of a friend to that of something more. The look in his eyes changed from a man who cared about her, to one of a man who would cherish her.
It was not the first time Heer saw a look like that in a mans eyes. The first time she had seen it, the look had been in Prem's eyes – the night of their first date.
*~*Flash Back*~*
(Heer = 15 & Prem = 17)
"Maya Bhabi please! Meri madat kijiyeh naa," Heer pleaded.
It had already been three weeks since she and Prem had gotten back from their trip to Mumbai for the school debate competition. They had been planning for weeks to go out, for their first official date, but Heer just couldn't get out of the house. Every time she planned to get away, something would come up, like the twins falling ill or Teji spraining her ankle. Heer just couldn't get a break, so her last resort was her sister-in-law, because the date was set for tomorrow night.
"Heer main kya karoon?" Maya asked as she prepared tea in the kitchen.
"Kuch bhi Bhabi. Mera yeh date pe jaana bohot zaruri hai," Heer said.
"Toh jaa naa."
"Bhabi main kaise jaoon? Bauji aur mere bhaiyoon se peecha kaise churaoon?"
"Kehde ke tu Neha ke saath film dekhne jaa rahi hai."
"Aagar maine aaisa kaha toh Nihaal Bhaia zid karnege ke woh mujhe drop karega. Phir Harman Bhaia mujhe lene pouch jayega. Aagar kissi ne Prem ko dekh liya…meri toh band baj jayegi!"
"Vaise, kitni dehr tak tujhe bahar rehna hai?" Maya asked after she stopped laughing.
"First date hai Bhabi…thoda zyada time toh lagega hi," Heer said with a wink.
"Kitni besharam hogayi hai tu!" Maya complained. "Badi Bhabi ke samne aapni hi date pe jaane ki baatein kaar rahi hai!"
"Oh stop it Bhabi. Aap jaanti hai ke aap meri saheli-cum-badi-behen hai, Bhabi toh baad mein."
"Magar Heer…" Maya began to say but Heer cut her off.
"Bhabi, kuch hi haftoon mein Prem ka graduation hojayega. Woh school chodke chala jayega. Please Bhabi…please!" Heer said as she literally fell to her knees.
"Yeh tu kya kaar rahi hai!" Maya yelled as she pulled Heer up. If she was nothing else, Maya was sap for love – she gave in. "Tik hai, tu ruk…main kuch karti hoon."
Thirty minutes later the entire family gathered for the evening snack of samosas and chai. Heer kept poking at Maya to say something but Maya was quite. Heer knew that part of it was because she wasn't sure how to make the offer, the other half knew that Maya was enjoying her agony. Finally, Maya spoke.
"Umm Bauji, bohot din hogaye Papa se mile hue. Issi liyeh main sooch rahi thi ke main unse mil aaun," Maya said casually.
"Haan haan kyun nahin," Balraj said. "Kaab jaana hai?"
"Main sooch rahi thi ke kaal shaam ko chali jaungi aur phir parso subha laut aungi."
"Parso?" Heer and everyone else said at the same time.
Maya squinted her eyes at Heer as a warning.
"Haan, woh Payal bhi aa rahi hai chutti manane iss liyeh…."
Heer didn't know Payal, Maya's younger sister, was coming home from school from the US – it was in the middle of the school year.
"Payal bhi aa rahi hai?" Heer asked.
It took all of Maya's self control to keep from smacking Heer upside the head. Here she was trying to make up the good excuse for Heer to say out of the house at night but Heer was ruining it herself. Maya rolled her eyes – of course Heer would do something like that. She could be so dense at times.
"Haan haan, kyun nahin," Teji said. "Harman ko saath mein leke jaana. Tu jayega naa Harman?"
"Haan Maa, kyun nahin. Main bhi aapne saali sahiba se mil loon," Harman teased. "Saali aadhi ghaar wali. Zaroor jaunga."
"Nahin!" both Heer and Maya yelled.
"Kyun?" Harman asked.
"Woh nahin, tum aana chate ho toh koi baath nahin hai. Bua bhi tumse bohot dino so milna chati hai," Maya said with a wink.
Heer couldn't help but giggle. Harman couldn't stand Maya's bua because she continuously fed him when he was there. She literally poked him in his guts and ribs complaining that he was too skinny.
"Bua?" Harman said under his voice. "Umm…Maya tum chali jaana. Mujhe bohot kaam hai."
Maya smiled – it worked. "Maa main sooch rahi thi ke Heer ko aapne saath lejaoon. Woh bhi Payal se mil legi aur mujhe company bhi miljayegi."
"Haan haan, kyun nahin," Teji said.
There is was – the plans were set. Maya and Heer would leave in the early evening so Heer could go and get ready at Maya's dads house. Maya's dad just happened to be out of town for a case he was working on so the house was to themselves, thus it wouldn't matter what time Heer came home.
"Main aur chutney leke aati hoon," Maya said as she excused herself.
Heer followed behind her and once they were out of everyone's sight Heer jumped up and down and hugged her.
"Bhabi you are the best!" she yelled. "My first date! My first date! I'm going on my first date!" Suddenly Heer became quiet. "Oh my God…………"
Maya turned around to see Heer looking a bit pale and faint. "Heer kya hua?"
"Oh my God…." Heer whispered. "I'm going on my first date." The enormity and horror of the upcoming event suddenly hit Heer like a pile of bricks.
Maya giggled. "Sambhal aapne aapko. Aab tu kissi ki girlfriend hai. Dates come with the territory!"
The next day Heer was a nervous wreck. What was she going to wear? What she going to do with her hair? How was she going to keep herself from passing out!? As she was a mess going through her closet trying to pick a decent outfit to wear her phone rang.
"Hello?" Heer answered. She didn't even bother with checking who it was.
"Heer? Saab tik hai?" It was Prem.
"Prem tum!? Haan, saab tik hai," she lied.
"Johot maat bolo. Tumhari awaz se hi pata chalta hai ke tum pareshan ho," Prem said.
"Kuch nahin hai baba. Aab bolo, phone kyun kiya?"
"Woh, aaj raath ka date yaad hai naa?"
As if she could forget. "Haan, kyun?"
"Aagar main kuch mangun toh kya tum woh karoge?" Prem asked.
"Pooch ke toh dekho," Heer said sweetly.
"Aaj mere liyeh saree pehnoge?"
That was on request that Heer was not expecting, but she should have. She knew that Prem loved to see women in saree's because he believed that the saree really brought out the true beauty of Indian women.
"Saree?" Heer was nervous, she had never worn one before. Heer didn't know what to say so she lied and said someone was calling her and hung up.
Where was she going to get a saree with a fitting blouse for tonight? She needed help. "Maya Bhabi!" Heer called as she raced to find Maya.
Once they reached Maya's house, they were on a clock. Heer had roughly 1.5 hours to get ready before Neha came to pick her up. Prem and told her that he had something to do so he would be waiting for her at the place. Everything was very hush-hush – Heer had no details.
First was Heer's hair. Heer was had long, think, black hair which was a curse and a blessing at the same time. As great as it looked, it took forever to get it done. Since they were pressed for time, the best Maya could do was use a flat iron. Next was Heer's make up, giving her a smoky greenish look to compliment the olive/dark green saree that she would be wearing. She played with the colors a little and gave her a slightly plum colored lip gloss. Next came all the adornments which included green gemstone earrings and both wrists full of bangles. As a final touch, Heer added payals because out of all accessories, she loved payals.
"Chal, aab tu saree pehenle. Then you are good to go," Maya said as she tidied up the mess they had created.
"Uh Bhabi, saree kaise pehente hai?" Heer asked as she held the fabric in her hands uncomfortably.
"Yeh lo!" Maya stood with her hands placed on her hips. "Aab yeh maat kehna ke tujhe saree pehenni nahin aati."
"Tik hai, nahin kahungi," Heer said with a wink.
"Heer!"
"Main kya karoon Bhabi? Pehle khabi saree nahin pehni hai."
Obviously there was nothing for Maya to do but put the saree on. As she worked on the pleats a thought occurred to her.
"Saree pehenna sik leh."
"Kyun?" Heer asked.
"Aab teri boyfriend ko saree pasand hai toh itna toh tujhe karni hi hogi," Maya teased. "Aagar tune nahin siki, kya paata shayad Prem ko hi tujhe saree pehenna naa hoga."
"Bhabi!" Heer yelled. She was shocked that such a comment came from her sister-in-law.
The last pin to her saree was added just in time because Neha arrived not two minutes later. Heer looked at herself in the mirror one last time, she hoped she looked ok. She was draped in a green and charcoal, floral printed saree, with a sleeveless blouse. She felt it was a bit sheer but Maya and Neha both said that it was just fine.

As Heer rode with Neha she asked over and over where she was going, but Neha gave no response. The driver pulled up to Gardens Restaurant – it was a small, yet cozy place (only could hold like 20 people), but it was Heer's favorite.
"Tik hai aab main chalti hoon," Neha said just as Heer stepped out.
"Tu nahin aayegi," Heer said. She was so nervous about this date she was grasping at straws.
Neha laughed out loud as she answered. "Haan, haan kyun nahin main toh zaroor aati. Lekin woh kya hai ne, ke mujhe itni kaam umar mein marna nahin hai. Aagar main andar gayi, Prem toh mujhe mardalega! Vaise bhi, mujhe kabab mein hadi nahin banni."
That comment had Heer blushing beet red. She stood there blushing even after Neha had driven off. It was only when someone called out to her that she came back to reality.
"Kya aap Heer madam hai?" a waiter asked.
"Ji," she replied.
"Aap please, mere saath aaiyeh."
Heer followed the waiter into the restaurant. It wasn't until she was inside the main lobby that she realized there was no one else there. As they came up to the main dining hall she noticed that all of the tables had been cleared out, except for one, there were candles everywhere. Then her eyes traveled to the person standing in the middle of the room – it was Prem. He looked utterly dashing in a black suit, which he paired with a black shirt and violet tie. He stood with his arms behind his back and a smile on his face.
When Heer looked into his eyes, something changed. She almost saw the click in his eyes as the light in them changed. The way he looked at her, she knew that he no longer just considered himself to be her friend or even boyfriend, but instead as a partner – a soul mate. The look in his eyes changed from a man who cared about her, to one of a man who would cherish her. When he began to walk towards her, she could see a hint of nervousness in his eyes, just like she had. They were both so lost in each others eyes that they didn't realize when the waiter had left them.
"Prem, yeh saab…" Heer began to say.
"Shh," Prem responded. "Koi sawal nahin." He then proceeded to pull out the most gorgeous bouquet of orchids Heer had ever seen.
"Thank you, I love orchids," she said as she smelled the flowers.
"Paata hai," Prem said. He held his arm out, which Heer shyly took, as he led her to the table. As he pulled out her chair for her, he asked in a hushed tone, "Are you nervous?"
Heer couldn't help but blush. Prem then took out a wrapped box and gave it to Heer.
"Yeh kya hai?" she asked.
"Khole ke toh dekho," Prem insisted.
Heer tore at the wrapping gently and soon exposed a beautiful golden flower pendant on a gold chain.

"Prem yeh…" Heer began to say.
"Main pehna doon?" he asked. When Heer didn't say anything he got up and began to put it around her neck. As he moved her hair to one side he spoke. "Yeh meri maa ki hai. Aaj main yeh tumne deh raha hoon."
Heer's eyes went wide in shock. She couldn't take a gift from Prem.
"Prem, main yeh nahin…" Heer began to say as she placed her hand over her chest where the necklace lay.
Before she could continue the waiter brought out their food. Prem and Heer ate in silence as music played in the back ground. Once they finished eating, Prem got up and held an hand out to Heer, which she took hesitantly. Prem pulled her up to her feet as a lovely song began to play. Heer recognized the song as "Everything" by Lifehouse.

Prem held onto Heer's hand and placed his other hand on her waist, drawing her close, as she steadied herself by putting a hand on his shoulder. The only thought in her mind – don't trip over the saree and land flat on her face.
Find me here
And speak to me
I want to feel you
I need to hear you
You are the light
That is leading me
To the place where
I find peace again
You are the strength
That keeps me walking
You are the hope
That keeps me trusting
You are the life to my soul
You are my purpose
You're everything
"Heer, mujhse tumse kuch kehna hai. Ek saach batana hai," Prem said.
"Kaunsa saach?" Heer asked.
"Uss din, Mumbai ke mall mein…maine tumse jhoot bola tha. Jaab maine kaha tha ke mujhe khabi daar nahin lagta, maine jhoot bola tha."
"Kya matlab?" One side of Heer felt like Prem was going to say he had changed his mind and how he too, like the others, also feared her brothers.
"Matlab ke kuch hai, jiske baarein mein sooch kaar main bohot daar jaata hoon." Prem said.
"Kiss baath ka daar hai tumhe Prem?" Heer asked.
"Tumhe khone ka daar," he said in a low whisper.
And how can I
Stand here with you
And not be moved by you
Would you tell me
How could it be
Any better than this
Heer stopped dancing and just looked into Prem eyes, as she waited for him to continue.
"Main tumhe khabi nahin kho sakta. Aapni zindagi tumhare bina main sooch bhi nahin sakta Heer," Prem said, his eyes not able to look directly at her. "Maa ke baad, mere zindagi mein tum hi saab se ahem ho. Main tumhe koh nahin sakta."
You calm the storms
You give me rest
You hold me in your hands
You won't let me fall
You steal my heart
And you take my breath away
Would you take me in
Would you take me deeper now
And how can I
Stand here with you
And not be moved by you
Would you tell me
How could it be
Any better than this
Heer could feel the sting of tears at the back of her eyes. "Prem…" she whispered.
"Uss din jaab tum boyfriend ke baarein mein baath kaar rahe the, toh mujhse bardasht nahin hua. Tum kissi aur ki hojao, yeh main khabi nahin seh sakta. Tum mere ho, sirf mere," Prem said.
Heer couldn't believe what she was hearing. Surely this had to be a dream.
"I love you Heer," he said. "Paata nahin kaab, kaise…magar tumse pyaar hogaya. I love you."
And how can I
Stand here with you
And not be moved by you
Would you tell me
How could it be
Any better than this
Cause you're all I want
You're all I need
You're everything
Everything
Prem fell quite, waiting to hear what Heer had to say. When she didn't say anything, he thought it was her refusal so he attempted to walk away only to be held back.
"I love you too Prem," Heer finally whispered.
You're all I want
You're all I need
You're everything
Everything
As Prem looked up at her face and saw the smile she had, he knew she was speaking the truth.
"School mein jis din tumne mera saath diya, uss din se pyaar karti hoon main tumhe. Jaabse maine tumhe jaana hai, taab se pyaar kiya hai tumhe. Kaise naa karti?" Heer asked. "Tum itne aache jo ho."
You're all I want
You're all I need
You're everything
Everything
Prem smiled a smile that came from the sheer happiness that he was feeling at the moment. Without hesitating he pulled her into a hug. This hug was not between friends, it was between two people who loved each other.
When the pulled away from the hug they looked into each others eyes, where their love shown. Tilting Heer's face slight towards his, he leaned down and placed his lips on top of hers. The kiss was light, innocent yet filled with love.
You're all I want
You're all I need
You're everything
Everything
Just as the song came to an end, Prem asked, "Heer, mujhse shaadi karogi?"
Heer looked up at him and laughed in his face.
"Tum haans kyun rahi ho?" Prem asked, in a grumpy voice.
"Kyun ke pehli baar tum decision lehne se pehle mujhse pooch rahe ho," she said, still giggling.
Even Prem smiled at her comment. "Woh chodo. Sawal ka jawab doh. Mujhse shaadi karoge?"
"Haan," Heer said without hesitating.
"Saach?" Prem asked. "Aagar tumhare parivaar ko main pasand nahin aaya toh? Aagar tumhare bhaiyoon ne mujhe pasand nahin kiya?"
"Ho hi nahin sakta," Heer said as the both sat on a window ledge and started up at the stars. "Meri tarha, mera parivaar bhi tumhe bohot pasand karenge."
"Sooch lo, tum tehre Maan parivaar ki ladli beti. Aur main, ek mamuli insaan. Jodi jamti nahin hai," he teased.
"Jodi bohot jamti hai!" Heer said as she hit Prem playfully. "Tum fikar maat karo, they will love you. Mera parivaar baas itna chate hai ke main kush rahoon. Aur meri kushi toh tum ho." Heer snuggled closer to Prem.
"Tik hai baba, magar zaara soocho…ke woh log mujhe pasand nahin kiya. Phir tum kya karogi? Kissi aur se shaadi kaar logi?" Prem teased.
"Nahin! Bilkul nahin! Tum kya soochte ho? Aagar tum mere bina nahin jee sakte, phir main tumhare bina kaise jee sakti hoo?" Heer asked.
"Toh kya karoge?"
"Aagar aaisa hua, toh…" Heer paused for a moment to think, "………toh main tumse bhag ke shaadi kar lungi."
"Saach?"
"Haan."
Prem held his hand out in front of her and asked, "Vaada?"
Heer smiled, put her hand in his and said, "Paaka vaada."
"Ek aur baath kehna tha tumse," Prem said. He leaned in even closer to her ears and whispered, "Bohot khubsuart laag rahi ho aaj. You look beautiful."
Heer blushed from head to toe as her heart skipped a beat and butterflies turned in her stomach. She could honestly say, for the first time in her life, someone had called her beautiful. She smiled because she felt beautiful. A quote she had read in a magazine flashed in her mind.
"You don't love her because she is beautiful. She is beautiful because you love her."
The line couldn't be more fitting for Heer and Prem. He made her beautiful – his love mad her beautiful.
She knew that there was no way she could live her life without Prem. No matter what the cost, she would be his.
*~*Back to Present*~*
Heer had been faithful to the promise she made to Prem that night. She had sacrificed her family to be with the only man who brought her true happiness.
That night had been one of the best in her life. Prem had spent almost all of his savings on that one date and that hadn't set well with Heer. When she had complained he had said that money was meant to be spent on the ones people loved. "Tum hi mere daulat ho, paisoon se mera kya lena dehna," he had said. Heer smiled at the thought and didn't realize when the tears rolled from her eyes.
"Heer, chal mere saath," Meher said as she grabbed her and walked towards the back of the hall. "Heer yeh kya hai?" Meher asked as she wiped the tears from Heer's cheek.
"Sorry Bhabi woh…." Heer's comment died as Maya called after Meher.
"Meher Bhabi, zaara yahaan aana," Maya shouted.
Meher had been pouring a glass of water and quickly handed it to Heer.
"Manmeet ki dadi ko pani chahiyeh thi, tu unhe yeh deh dena. Main abhi aati hoon, phir baath karenge." She stepped away but asked, "Tu tik hai naa?"
Heer just nodded her head.
Heer gathered herself together and plastered a smile on her face before going to give the water to the grandmother.
"Tum Veera ki badi behen ho naa?" the older lady asked. When Heer confirmed her suspission, she continued, "Tum toh bohot sundar ho beta."
Heer just smiled at her. She began to walk away but the lady stopped her.
"Beta, tum aaise safed kapde kyun pehne ho?" she asked. "Shaadi ka ghar hai, kya paata tumhare liyeh bhi ek rishta aa jaiyeh. Lekin aaise kapde pehnoge toh koi ladka tumhe dekhega bhi nahin."
"Meri shaadi hochuki hai," Heer said.
"Shaadi hochuki hai? Magar kaab? Tumhare Bauji toh keh rahe the tumhari shaadi abhi honi baki hai."
"Nahin Dadi-ji. Meri shaadi ko saath saal hochuki hai," Heer said.
"Oh," the lady fell into deep thought. "Shayad maine ghalat suni thi. Tumhara paati ka naam?" she asked.
"Prem Jhuneja," Heer replied.
"Oh aacha. Magar tum suhagan ho, suhagan ki tarha raho. Naa gale mein mangalsutra, naa maang mein sindoor. Aur yeh safed kapde…nahin yeh tik nahin hai beta. Bolni toh nahin chahiyeh lekin tum ek vidva lagti ho."
Heer smiled at the irony. "Main vidva lagti hoon, kyun ke main vidva hoon."
"Tumhara paati?" she asked.
"Woh…" Heer's eyes began to sting with tears again. "Woh aab iss duniya mein nahin rahe."
"Haye, teri umar bhi kya hai? Yeh saab kaab hua?" Dadi-ji asked.
"Saath saal pehle."
"Kya? Matlab, teri shaadi bhi toh saath saal pehle hui thi. Phir…?" the older woman looked confused.
"Jis din meri shaadi hui thi, ussi raath ko mera Prem mujhse chin gaya. Meri suhagan aur vidva tak ka safar baas kuch ghantoon ke the. Jis din main suhagan bani, ussi din kissi ne mujhse mera suhag china tha," Heer said.
Heer couldn't fight the tears in her eyes anymore. When she turned to leave she nearly ran into her three brothers. She glared at them with her red rimmed eyes as the tears spilled onto her cheeks. Her broken heart cursed them for what they had done to her Prem. Her broken faith, her shattered dreams, her tortured soul – they all sent out pain filled curses.
"Isski jaaisi zindagi kissi ki naa ho. Uski jaaisi kismat bagwan aapni dushman ko bhi naa deh," the woman said.
Heer watched as her brothers' heads hung in shame, not able to look her in the eyes. As she rushed past her brothers she heard her father call everyone so that the engagement ceremony could take place. Heer knew that Veera would be upset if she wasn't there, so he quickly rushed to the bathroom and get herself together before going out again.
She joined the crowd just as she heard Veera ask, "Didi kahaan hai?"
Heer stepped closer and placed a hand on Veera's shoulder, "Main yahaan hoon."
"Heer, tu tik hai?" someone asked as they stood close to Heer.
Heer turned and smiled when she say Maya. "Main tik hoon Bhabi. Just fine." Heer gave a smile that was half hearted, and she knew that Maya could tell.
Maya squeezed her hand tightly to let her know that she was always there for her. Heer had to fight the tears that were stinging her eyes. She squeezed back, needing every bit of support she could get. Before she knew it, Kulraj and Meher were there right next to her.
The engagement ceremony was simple and sweet, just like Veera. The ring that Manmeet put on her finger was a beautiful diamond solitaire surrounded by smaller diamonds on the band. Everyone cheered for the couple and wished them all the happiness in the world. Just like everyone else, she too blessed with couple from the bottom of her heart. She prayed that they happiness and love in their lives. She also prayed that when they faced rough patches, that they would be united and face them together.
The party went on as music played, people danced and were happy in general. Heer watched as Veera and Manmeet danced together. Just in the way that Manmeet held her, and the way what he whispered in her ears made her smile, Heer could tell that he would keep her happy. When they thought no one was looking, Manmeet leaned in and placed a quick kiss on Veera's cheek. Veer was caught by surprise but a split second later she blushed and rested her head on his chest.
Heer eyes filled with tears and there was nothing she could do to stop them. She knew she had to get away before she drew attention to herself. She rushed pass all of the guests and headed towards the stairs. As she approached, she saw her father come up to her brothers, who were huddled together.
"Preet Mehta nahin aaya?" Balraj asked.
Heer didn't pay attention to anything else that was said. She ran upstairs and let her tears fall free. There as no holding them back tonight. Once she was in the safety her room, she cried. The moment the door was locked behind her, the first of many tears began to fall. She cried that night, like so many other nights. She cried for the ceremonies that she would never have with Prem. She cried for all the secret moments she would never have with Prem. She cried for all of the laughs she wouldn't be able to share. She cried for the man who was her world. She cried for the love that was her life. She cried for the world and life she had lost in the blink of an eye.
