Maya slowly adjusts the dupatta at her neck before walking into the large hall with the other girls. She felt her heart getting tight as she saw his face in the dim lighting, he slowly turned and she couldn't stare him in the eyes as she looked away.
"Come on Maya, why are you standing outside?" Radz frowns. "Everyone's already inside."
"I'm coming Radz. Just need to fix the back of my outfit," Maya looks down at her baby pink anarkali suit.
"Want some help?" Radz offers.
"Hey girls." Alekh appears and Radz immediately grins.
Maya smiles back. "Hey Alekh. You guys go ahead in. I'll be there soon," She watches as Alekh swiftly leads Radz towards the head tables.
Without letting her eyes wander for anyone else she walks into the washroom and sits down in the lounge section, burying her head in her hands. Why was it so hard to let her feelings take hold of her? Why did she constantly want to protect herself from everything that she knew she'd love? Why couldn't she be like any other girl and let herself fall in love? Who cares if it might become long distance? Love conquers all of that doesn't it?
"No," she told herself. "Look at Arushi and Alekh."
Her mind was playing all sorts of games with her and by now she was fed up of it. She just wanted to be a normal girl once. In love with someone who loved her. Loved her for who she was. Harshad did that, the only problem was she wasn't able to see it. Nor was she allowing him to let her see it.
Nearly 10 minutes later she emerges from the washroom, smoothing down her outfit, when she suddenly bumps into someone who steadies her by the shoulders until he sees her and lets go.
"Sorry," He mutters quickly before walking away.
"Harshad wait!" Maya calls out as she sees him disappear from sight.
She shakes her head as she walks into the main hall and sits down next to Radz at the table.
"Where were you?" Radz frowns. "That took longer than a few minutes."
"Timing me now are we?" Maya giggles as she takes a small sip of water.
"No—I got kinda worried." Radz admits. "You've been acting strange since you started packing for tomorrow. I mean yeah you're worried about your cousin, but it's something else on your mind."
Someone else is more like it, Maya slowly grins up at Radz. "I'll be fine. Promise."
Radz rolls her eyes as Alekh comes and slides into the seat next to her. "Am I interrupting again?"
Maya shakes her head. "Not at all,"
"Maya—aren't you supposed to be sitting up on stage with Harshad?" Alekh asks.
"What? No. No one told me anything," Maya frowns as the others come and sit down next to him.
"Maya—you're supposed to be sitting with Harshad," Shabo tells her.
"No," Harshad's hand lightly brushes Maya's shoulder as he puts his hand on her chair. "I didn't ask Maya, I thought maybe Kimz would like to sit with me? She HAS been Rinki's best friend from before." Harshad offers his hand to Kimz, while looking at Maya through the corner of his eye.
Kimz rolls her eyes. "Really? I have to sit up there with YOU?" Kimz sighs. "If I must,"
"Stop being overly dramatic Kimz," Shabo groans. "Just go, so we can start b****ing about how we all hate you."
Kimz mocks a look of shock before taking Harshad's hand and letting him lead her up to the table.
Maya watches with a weird piercing pain in her heart. He was smiling at Kiran in a way that she had never seen him smile at her. She wasn't supposed to get jealous. He was JUST her friend. Someone she had to forget about now. She'd be able to. The minute she boarded the plane tomorrow morning, all his thoughts would be erased from her mind; or so she hoped.

"You know—they look kinda cute together?" Shabz mentions as she takes a sip of her water.
"Who?" Ravs looks up from reading the programs that were left out on the tables.
"Kimz and Harshad." Shabz replies.
"I think so too," Yug smiles.
"We should get Rinkz to do something about it," Shabz grins happily.
While the conversation was happening on one side of the table, Maya was staring hard at the candle flame burning in front of her while Radz and Alekh were watching her intently.
"Do you think—" Alekh slowly nudges Radz who nods back.
"I've thought it since the minute we got to Rinkz house." Radz tells him. "I just don't know if Harshad feels the same way." Alekh smiles slowly and Radz frowns. "Why are you smiling? What do you know that I don't?"
"Guy code?" Alekh shrugs.
"Alekh!" Radz frowns harder.
"Fine—he's not sure if Maya feels the same way."
"The same way?" Radz's eyes widen. "Meaning? He likes her?" She whispers loudly.
"Who likes who?" Ravs asks a bit louder.
"I'm going to go get some more drinks. Can I get anyone anything?" Maya stands up suddenly.
Everyone declines and that's when Radz decides to fill the others in.
"We're not sure—but we think maybe Harshad and Maya might like each other." She says slowly.
"WHAT?" The others ask.
Alekh nods. "We think...not sure yet,"
"What do you guys think?" Rinki asks.
Radz narrows her eyes at her. "As if you don't know, Miss. Matchmaker."
"Love the title." Rinkz grins. "Know what?"
"Harshad?"
"My brother, yes," Rinki nods.
"Maya?"
"My friend, yes?"
"Anything going on there?" Alekh sighs.
Rinki fakes a look of shock. "Why would you think that?"
"Rinkz, give it up. We can see it in your eyes."
"That's the happiness from being married," Rinki snickers.
"What's going on?" Kimz grins as she grabs a chair.
"Ask her," Radz points to Rinki who sighs before sitting down with the gang.

"Harshad, wait!" Maya runs as fast as her heels would let her, until she nearly fell past him.
"What?"
"Why, why are you being so cold?" Maya frowns. "What did I do?"
"What did you do?" Harshad smirks sarcastically. "Let's count shall we?"
Maya sighs. "Please—don't."
Without saying another word she turns and steps out into the cool night air on the veranda.
He watches her through the fabric blinds and sighs before stepping out next to her. "You wanted to know,"
"Not so harshly," she replies back without glancing at him.
"Then you shouldn't have done all of this,"
"And you?" Maya turns around. "Everything you're doing is fine?"
"Me? Main kya kar raha hoon?" He frowns in response.
Maya shakes her head. "Choro, mujhe kuch nahin kehna," She walks towards the hall again until he grabs her hand and pulls her back towards the railing, locking her in with his hands.
"Not this time. No more running away. No more lies."
"Harshad let me go." Maya pushes him away and frowns. "First of all, don't try to behave like your own stupid television character, it's not that amazing. And secondly just stop it; all of these things you just said were things I never imagine YOU'D say. I thought we'd have friendship at least but now I don't even think we'll have that." Maya walks away furiously fast not even letting Harshad have a chance to catch up.

"Now we'll have the couple of the evening have their first dance," The announcer tells everyone.
Sushant drops everything before extending his hand to his new wife who smiled putting her hand into his. "Can you believe we're actually married?"
"I'd love to be clichd and say, 'no, it all happened so quickly," Rinki grins. "But it really wasn't like that,"
He leads her down to the floor and places his hands slowly on her waist and she shies away before wrapping her arms around his neck. "I love you,"
"I know,"
"Uh huh?" Rinki smiles.
"Course I know," He slowly kisses her cheek and they both wince when the camera flashes go off. "That might get annoying,"
Rinki inches closer to Sushant, burying her head in his chest while the flashes erupt all over them. "At least it's only for tonight,"
"No kidding," He murmurs down to her before gesturing for everyone else to join them.
"Can I have this dance?" Yug bends down on one knee to Ravjot who smiles until Shabz' eyes widen.
"HE'S PROPOSING!"
"He's not proposing Shabz!" Ravs rolls her eyes, annoyed with the sudden attention on the group of theirs.
"I already have," Yug smiles before holding out the ring on Ravs' hand.
"Shut up Yug," Ravs grins before letting him lead her out to the dance floor.
"Will you dance with me?" Alekh comes to Maya a few minutes after the dancing portion of the evening starts.
"You should be dancing with Radz," Maya smiles as she takes his hand.
"She's busy," Alekh nods towards the dance floor where Radz was dancing with Harshad.
Maya slowly lets him lead her to the dance floor and they dance until Harshad taps Alekh on the shoulder. "My partner would love to dance with you."
Alekh glances back at a smiling Radz and then looks at Maya. "I don't know if MY partner would like the dance with you,"
Maya shrugs. "It's fine. Go spend time with Radz."
Alekh smiles as he moves away from Maya and goes to Radz.
"Are you sure you want to dance? I'm okay if we don't." Maya says softly.
"We can dance," Harshad pulls her closer from the waist and she hesitatingly put her arms around his neck. "You okay?"
"Why are you asking?" Maya's voice had a slightly angry tone to it and Harshad couldn't blame her considering the way he behaved with her before.
"I'm sorry Maya,"
"It's fine." She answers as they sway to the music.
"I didn't mean to get so upset," Harshad sighs.
"You weren't upset," Maya points out. "You were rude,"
"Fine, I was." He admits.
She smiles as they song switches into a familiar tune. "Is this...?"
He nods and she instantly realizes that he requested specially for this song and so she unwraps her arms from his neck and runs way, hiding behind a pillar as the song starts.
Yeah, ooooh...
We started as friends
But something happened inside me
Maya shuts her eyes as she relives the moments when they had first met and how Harshad had always been there for her, except for the first few meetings.
[Now I'm reading into everything
But there's no sign you hear the lightning, baby
Every time he'd extend a hand to her she'd shun it away and now she cringed at the memory. She couldn't imagine making him go through what she had while he ignored a little while ago.
You don't ever notice me turning on my charm
Or wonder why I'm always where you are
Maya smiles to herself as she remembers whenever Rinki would invite her out, Harshad would always be there, helping them or simply just being there. Things like this were things she HAD often overlooked.
I've made it obvious
Done everything but sing it
I've crushed on you so long, but on and on you get me wrong
I'm not so good with words
And since you never notice
The way that we belong
I'll say it in a love song
She slowly peers around the pillar and saw him standing at the edge of the dance floor with his back to her and his shoulders slumped. Her heart ached and she couldn't help but want to reach over to him and put a hand on his shoulder but then she retreated back to the pillar knowing what he would have thought if she had done that. She closed her eyes, listening to the lyrics again.
I've heard you talk about
(Heard you talk about)
How you want someone just like me ( just like me)
But everytime I ask you out
(Time I ask you out)
We never move pass friendly, no no
Maya's eyes widen and she realizes he must've been there that night when she and Rinki had done their talks about the perfect guy. Of course Rinki had just described Sushant in a more subtle manner while Maya had gone on and one about her perfect guy only to realize later that she was describing Harshad.
It was true about him asking her out and her assuming it was just a friend's thing. She mentally cursed herself for constantly being so blind at the affection he was showering on her.
And you don't ever notice how I stare when we're alone
Or wonder why I keep you on the phone
I've made it obvious
Done everything but sing it
(I've crushed on you so long but on and on you get me wrong)
I'm not so good with words
And since you never notice
The way that we belong
I'll say it in a love song
Yeah...
Maya could feel the tension gripping her as she peered around the pillar again and saw him look at her with those big brown eyes again.
You are my very first thought in the morning
And my last at nightfall
You are the love that came without warning
I need you, I want you to know
Maya lets go of the pillar and walks slowly in his direction, not caring if anyone was watching them. All that mattered was what he was trying to convey. Without waiting for her reaction he took her hand and took her back out to the patio and they stood side by side listening to the remainder of the song.
I've made it obvious
So finally I'll sing it
(I've crushed on you so long)
I'm not so good with words
And since you never notice
The way that we belong
I'll say it in a love song
She couldn't believe he was blatantly telling her everything through a song and what she couldn't believe even more was that it was one of her favorite songs but apparently she had never understood the real meaning behind it until now. Until tonight.
And sing it until the day you're holding me
I've wanted you so long but on and on you get me wrong
I more than adore you but since you never seem to see
But you never seem to see
I'll say it in this love song.
He slowly takes her hand in his and kisses the back of it, causing her to shiver and close her eyes.
"Don't." Maya says softly.
"But Maya,"
"No." She shook her head. "Look—don't get me wrong. I just—don't want to rush into this now, without knowing the future. Let me come back from home and then we'll talk?"
Harshad lets go of her hand and backs away. "You still call it home. What's the chance that you're coming back?"
"What do you mean Harshad?" Maya frowns. "I love Mumbai, I love my job. Course I'd come back."
"We'll see," He shrugs before turning the other way.
"Fine. Go." Maya calls after him. "I'm taking a cab tomorrow. I don't want to have to see this kadhoos face before I leave tomorrow," She stomps back inside before him.
Harshad sighs before letting the cool air whisk around him. How had things gone from bad to worse even though he had tried to make things right? Maybe Maya was right and things just weren't meant to be between them...
