That was one heck of a flashback no? WOW!! It was incredible!! It is quite amazing how things do not always work out the way we want them or expect them to. Atul assumes that Neha would be the perfect partner for him, just because it seems logical. Well, when it comes to relationships, things do not always tend to be consistent and logical, which is the one thing he should have realised. With Neha it was logic, with Meher it was that sense of comfort and ease.It was...wasn't it? 😆 Thank you. And I agree that things always don't work out the way we want them to, especially where relationships are concerned. And Atul has a ways to go before he realizes that!
They were so open with each other, I just wish he would have stopped seeing Meher as a little kid and would have noticed her as the beautiful mature woman that she is. That flashback was just amazing- love how Atul is fighting to keep control of his urges, fighting to not make a move on Meher, fighting to not make his feelings evident. And that state of confusion that Meher is going through- does he love me or doesn't he? What I loved the most was the Balbir-Meher-Atul interaction. They are so much like a close-knit family. I am sure Balbir would much rather have a Bahu like Meher than that Neha! Anyway, it was a great update, superbly written, and I can't wait until Friday when this flashback continues!!

Yep, they are really so comfortable with each other and I think for Atul, it just snuck up on him. And that is the reason why he is so hell bent upon fighting his urges, because he doesn't see the seriousness of it! 😉 Ah, you are right about Balbir preferring someone like Meher than Neha for a bahu! Oh, the flashback continues tomorrow..see you then!!

So Balbir and Meher like to conspire? Because the way Atul thought it, it was as though they had done things like this before. And Atul knows her mannerisms really well! God, he's an idiot for not realising his feelings. 😆 I loved the whole Atul-bashing by Balbir, it was so realistic, and it shows how close he and Meher are, and it also shows that he knows Meher and Atul are good friends, because I don't think he'd have badmouthed his son in front of just anybody. It was very cute. And then the offhand comment about Meher hating marshmellows really serves to further drive home the point of how close the two had gotten, how good friends they had become. And the teasing on the part of father and son, which they allowed Meher to watch, it shows that they think of her as family. She is no longer just Sanjana's friend, she is family as well, which Atul had to go and ruin. *shakes head* I cannot wait to see what he does to try and make up for it.

Hey Radz! Yep! They like to conspire and they had done things like this or somewhat like it before! 😆 Isn't this guy an idiot, really? He knows everything about her, and yet refuses to admit that his feeling could go deep!! 🤔 Oh yeah, Meher has already become a part of their lives, quite inadvertantly...and Balbir would not dream of bad mouthing Atul in front of anyone but people close to him. Says a lot about what he feels for Meher, no? 😃

So they may be comfortable around one another, but physical contact is a no-no? 😆 Especially on Atul's side. The line 'Her skin was like silk and he had the sudden insane urge to find out what the rest of her felt like.' had my breath catch. He's been attracted to her for this long, and he could not admit it to himself? What an idiot. Seriously. He tries to write it off, the age thing really bugs him no?, but obviously he isn't going to be able to. She's wormed her way, not just into his life and family, but now into his heart as well, and under his skin, and it's always going to be their, this attraction. He should take advantage of it. And no wonder he let her kiss him! 😆😉

Ah, yes. I think it just snuck up on him that touching Meher could be dangerous!! 😉 And you know what, I think that whole attraction just came out at that point when he went to wipe off the frosting..up until that point, I don't think he had really let himself go that far. Something happened that night...and all of a sudden, he could not stop thinking about her that way! Yeah...can you imagine ...he thought all his christmases had come at one time! 😆

And then the ease at which they talk, though physical contact really seems to be becoming a problem with Atul. 😆 He is thinking of marrying someone else, when he is insanely attracted to someone else. What are we going to do with him? Her throwing a snowball at him was too cute! Such a Meher thing to do, and then he pulls her close, and makes himself crazy with want, and to make himself distracted, he dumps snow down her neck. *shakes head* Seriously Di, what are we to do with him?

You know, I think here, it is his defense mechanism kicking in...forcing himself to think about Neha..trying to run away from Meher, who he knows can make him go quite insane 😉 I know...*sigh*...I guess you are just going to have to keep reading to find out!! 😆

Oh thought! Since he is so anti-physical contact with Meher, he'd probably refuse to touch her in anyway after this, wonder how he'll react about someone else touching her? Holding her hand, casual contact. Because even casual contact seems to drive him up the wall. 😆 I cannot wait for jealous Atul to make an appearance.

Ooh, you may be on to something. But for that he has to come face to face with Meher and the way she is feeling right now..she could very well kill him! 😆 You'll find out soon enough.

I love this update. So centred on showing us their relationship, I cannot wait for Friday now! I want to know what happened next!

But to me it looks a little implausible at the moment...no one knows that Prem is actually going "through" stuff...for all intents and purposes, Heer is ok...other than being pregnant of course. 😛 See you tomorrow!

I will call him a duffer today, a 'buddhu', but in a good way! He already feels for Meher without even being aware about his feelings in which direction its going. He notices even her wear with such detailed observation. And in this break it seems only he feels something but Meher is still in the dark about her own feelings, right? Yeah, well he knew his father had gone to pick her up and that they must be up to something. Too good a chance to miss!! Isn't he just? I mean he knows her so well...inside out, maybe he has never known anyone as well as he does her...well, maybe Prem. But still he can't see what is staring him in the face. If he did we would not have a tale and that is a different story altogether! 😆 Yep, Meher is still in the dark about her feelings. 😉

Just loved Balbir here, poor guy, have to give him a hug! He made the mug for himself indulging himself for once with marshmallows & he didn't even get to have it, really pity him! Ok will make him a nice mug of hot chocolate with loads of marshmallows myself. 😆😆 Loved that little father-son interaction there. It shows no matter how much Atul runs from emotional attachments in this regard he never compromises. He loves his dad to such an extent that he keeps an hawk's eye over his diet regime & lifestyle, he only has his dad in his life now & its nice to see his love & concern for him. All ur characters & family in Destiny as far as family bonding goes is really out of this world Smitha, no wonder we just love every bit of it. I know..see what a nice choice Balbir is? 😉 Toldja! Ooh, so now you are not inviting Prem and Atul for coffee, but Balbir for hot chocolate...oooh...nice! 😉 Yep, Atul loves his dad and cares for him, knowing he is the only one left. It was nice to see Meher enjoying that banter & she was so unaware that someone was getting affected by all her simple gestures. And he knows that she doesn't like marshmallows, what else does he know about her?? So inadvertently he just went to take that speck of chocolate from the corner of her mouth & with that gesture he shocked not only Meher but himself as well. But his experience & age comes to his rescue, how quickly he covers his acts! And this line again made me giggle to see how he consoles himself with an excuse, deciding that it was that time of the night when the defenses are down and was just a one off thing.....my question to u Smitha, does this 'one off thing' happen a lot to him? 😆😆 I tell u he is a duffer, still can't grasp what his heart is already indicating. Ah, I know..Meher is so unconcerned. You are so right about him shocking her and himself more than anything!! And in order to cover up, he turned on to Meher, which he knew would rile her up and not have her thinking about what just happened. 😃 Umm, you know, this one off thing may have happend to him, not that he acted on it every time...😉

Hmmm, so is he willing to settle down with Neha inspite of not being in love with her on basis of a mere compromise that he wants to make for his dad's sake? He knows he doesn't feel the same way for Neha but he is willing to make some adjustments (btw what exactly r the adjustments) in his life to settle down with her that too for some weird reasons like she being smart, beautiful & from similar background & interacted with the same society but not on LOVE, really when will this guy learn? Is he trying to run from what he is feeling for Meher by contemplating on Neha? And all his concentration went for a toss the moment he saw Meher, he had to follow her, still he didn't realise why is he feeling like this? Analyse, Atul, analyse ur feelings. Its amazing how he knows every little details about Meher right from her nature, likes, dislikes, wardrobe....everything! And Smitha did he too feel a little er....spirited watching that frisky squirrel?? 😆😆 I think you got this one..he was contemplating Neha as an escape route from Meher..knowing she is affecting him badly, still wanting to prove to himself that he can take control of his life (yeah right)!! 😆 Oh, the adjustment,s he meant, like having someone else share his life and his personal space...yeah, he looks at that as an adjustment...Ooh, he will analyze them soon enough...frisky..what are you talking about...**innocent muh**

Duffer, he still didn't realise he has never opened up with anybody about his pent up feelings & love for his mom like the way he did with her without any restrain? It seemed so natural with him to just share his feelings with her, the age gap didn't matter, her immaturity compared to him didn't matter, her lack of response at his random memories & thoughts didn't matter to him, he just felt like letting himself go at that moment & share everything with her. Oh he is going to feel the jolt so badly when he will realise why did he do all this or feel all this the way he did!

And Meher was soooooo sweet! She did exactly what was required to lighten the mood up, did she realise he was meditating about his past & so did that antic to just cheer him up? If so very very clever of her. Loved this childish act & it was amazing to see he too caught up with her in her own act & gave her a dose of her own medicine. These little gestures of hers unlocks his pent up past & makes him feel free to let himself go from his hangups. And Meher was simply anxious to know how he will reciprocate, right? She was just scared to know what he might be upto but he was feeling way too frisky for his own good then but I admire his control over himself & the way he projects himself hiding behind that facade is simply remarkable! Yeah and this duffer, to borrow your word, did not even realize why he is doing all these things with her. And yep, her age, her maturity or its lack there of, did not bother him when he was reminiscing. And Meher, was partly at a loss as to what to do...but did not want him to brood, so she tried to distract him, in a very Meher sort of way. 😆😆 And yep, being with her, unlocks him...frees him...of his issues. Meher was not sure how he would react...and yep, that is why she was anxious.

Smitha simply lovely, amazing, spellbinding, mindblowing!!

See I am doing it again, just running away with my thoughts & speculations. Will desperately wait for ur next update. Will this Christmas break be over by Friday? Won't it be till Monday atleast? See I am such a sap for all this budding romance! U r an awesome writer Smitha, 89 chapters gone & still the story is as captivating as always. Love u for this, great job.

Umm, no you have not missed anything. I think by adjustment he meant that if he married her then she would be staying with them and I think Atul was still wondering how he felt about that! 😃 I hope that answered your question. yeah...me too! 😆

Chapter 91

Atul decided that handling an irate Meher was better than a curious and compliant one. Since he was sure only he could sense the subtle awareness that had crept between them, it was up to him to be extra careful around her. "I am going to get you back for that, Atul," she said, frantically trying to get the snow from her clothes as they walked to the house.

"It was your fault," he said, grinning, while he held the door for her. Meher stomped her feet where she stood, trying to get the snow off the boots, before she pulled them off and walked inside, into the breakfast area. "Where are you going?"

"To change," Meher said, turning to glower at him.

"I was wondering where you had gotten to." Both of them turned, just in time to see Neha walk in from the direction of the kitchen, followed by a flushed looking Beth.

"Hello," he said, smiling. "You are early." She wasn't supposed to be here until after lunch.

Neha only raised her eyebrows and turned to Meher, where the snow clung to the front of her jacket. "Aren't you a little old to be playing in the snow?" He frowned at her curtness.

"Good afternoon to you too," Meher said, smiling sweetly, while her eyes flashed, mostly at him. "I'd love to stay and chat but I need to get out of these clothes." With that, she turned around and walked away, Beth hurrying after her.

"I can't believe you let her get away with that," Neha launched furiously.

It was his turn to raise his eyebrows. "Get away with what?" Atul wondered what it was about Meher that irked her so, making a mental note to ensure these two weren't around each other too much. She stared at him for a minute and in the blink of an eye, the anger vanished and she smiled, linking her arm with his. "I am so excited about tonight's dinner. Dad's new partner will be there. Gosh, I can't wait for you to meet him..."

Dinner ended up being quite a bore. Atul did not really consider himself anti-social, but Christmas parties could be pretty monotonous. Quite a few times, he found his mind wandering to what his father and Meher were up to. Balbir was taking her and all the teenage kids from his book club out to dinner, a treat he called it for putting up with an old man all year. Atul thought they probably had more fun than he did, being stuck here. Neha had not been too pleased when he had decided to call it a night at half past eleven. "I'll call you," Atul said, bestowing a perfunctory kiss on her cheek and walked away, thinking he'd buy her a present to make up for it. She was going home with her parents later, so he was not too concerned that Neha was stranded. It was not surprising to see Meher and his dad were still up, sprawled on the library carpet in front of the fireplace, playing scrabble. Atul grinned to see his father scratch his head over the letters in his possession, his glasses glinting in the firelight, while Meher looked smug, her cheeks flushed either with joy or the heat from the fire, he wasn't sure. Sensing his presence, Balbir looked up and his face brightened. "Who's winning?" he asked, moving closer to where they sat, pulling off the tie and jacket he had worn.

His father sighed. "She is beating me to a pulp. And she won't cut me any slack for my age."

"That's because you use the age thing only when it suits you," Meher said, rolling her eyes.

Atul glanced at the score and indeed, she was at least seventy points ahead of Balbir. As he rolled up the sleeves of his white shirt, Meher asked, "Are you planning to help him?"

Balbir nodded appreciatively, while his son mused over the words on the board. "You are home early. How was dinner?"

"Demanding," Atul said offhandedly.

"What happened?" Meher asked, her chin resting on her hand. "Did someone ask you to pass the salt?" Balbir chuckled wholeheartedly, while she giggled. Atul did not deign to answer.

"It will be the last thing that will amuse you tonight," he said, placing his tiles one by one on the board. "There you go. The Q has a triple letter score, and I use the A from this word here and the K goes here, right on the double word score." He rattled of a quick calculation. "Total score is eighty four." Atul had the satisfaction of seeing her jaw drop and paused for effect, "and since I used all seven letters, a bonus fifty points."

"There is no such word," Meher told him, frowning as she sat up. He tossed the dictionary, which she caught and riffled through the pages.

"I couldn't think of a word with a Q and no U following it," Balbir beamed at his son. Atul smiled. She was irritated and he was amused, liking the fact that she was all riled up. Her determined chin told him that she was not going to give in so easily, so he settled down to finish what he had started.

Warning bells should have gone off in his head, when all ten days that Christmas, Atul had found excuses to be around his father and Meher. He kept telling himself that he couldn't really expect Balbir to entertain her when she was his responsibility. And also since this would be the last time she'd visit, it was but natural to make sure she saw most of Toronto . Neha had been furious at all the cancelled luncheons and dinners and she had made her relief at Meher's departure well known to him. For all intents and purposes, things should have gone back to normal after the holidays, but somehow they hadn't. For one, their conversations were no longer restricted to the weekends he went to visit as they had begun to e-mail each other regularly. Two months after Meher had gone back, something else occurred that should have jolted him to his sense about what had been happening.

"My parents are inviting the Mayor and a few others for dinner. I really want you there," Neha said, as she leaned against his desk. She had taken to stopping in his office when she pleased, as if trying to keep tabs on him and it was beginning to annoy Atul.

"Hmm," he said, reading through the file on his desk, not really paying much attention.

"Great," she chimed. "It is this Saturday. I'll tell mum that..."

Something jarred his memory. He slid a glance calendar on the desk and sure enough, there were tiny Xs marked over the weekend. "Not this Saturday."

"Oh, I forgot," Neha said, her eyes flickering to him and moving away. Atul knew that it was a lie. "Well, you'll just have to call her and cancel. I mean, the Mayor is coming to...

"No," he bit out, his eyes hard chips as he leaned back in his chair and watched her, probably seeing her for the first time. "I am not going to cancel my plans for anyone." Did she really think it was that easy to manipulate and control? Neha straightened with an almost malicious glint in her eye. "And if I ask you to choose?"

"Then I would say we have nothing more to discuss," he said coldly.
"You are dumping me for…her?" Color slashed across her cheekbones, shock written all over her face. "You bas***d…!" Atul let the insult slide. "I hope you get your worthless heart trampled. It would serve you right," she said, grabbing her purse and walking to the door.
