In Mumbai, a wary eye on Maya
RASHEED KIDWAI
Amitabh at the premiere of Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Naa in Mumbai on Thursday. (Reuters)

July 4: Several imponderables lie ahead of the political potboiler now being scripted in Delhi. One concerns a family in Mumbai that all of India knows: Amitabh Bachchan's.

As the Samajwadi Party and the Congress drift closer, the realignment has a personal sub-plot involving the Bachchans and the Nehru-Gandhis whose relationship — now gone sour — spans six decades.

Sources said Samajwadi general secretary Amar Singh, who never tires of calling the Bachchans his family, has made it clear the political repositioning would not hurt them.

But the freeze between the Bachchans and Gandhis may continue for many more months, with the Congress-Samajwadi ties unlikely to trigger sudden warmth between Sonia Gandhi and Amitabh Bachchan, whom she once regarded as a brother.

Sources close to the Bachchans said the family was a little wary — of Mayavati. They fear a witchhunt by the Uttar Pradesh chief minister. The Bachchans trace their roots to the state and have interests there.

Amar has all along denied allegations that he was the "spoiler" in the family's ties with the Nehru-Gandhis, pointing out that the relationship dated back to before his birth. "I have no authority or competence to comment on the ties of two great families. Only they are competent to comment on each other," he had once said.

Social circles in Delhi and Mumbai are watching how Jaya Bachchan, a Samajwadi MP, would react to her party's rapprochement with the Congress. Indications are that Jaya, who has in the past indirectly lashed out at the Congress and its first family, might keep a low profile for some time.

The Gandhis and Bachchans have never spoken about the reason their friendship soured but common acquaintances blame it on clash of personalities, ego tussles and one-upmanship amid failures and tragedies.

For years, the buzz in the Delhi social circuit was that the families had fallen out over money. But all those who know them well reject this theory. The Bachchans' problems with ABCL might have further strained ties, but were not the prime reason for the end of the friendship.

Family insiders from the two sides blame the bitterness on human failings.

There was an issue of obsession with astrology. After Rajiv Gandhi's death, when Sonia was feeling low and depressed, rather than being given emotional support, she is said to have been bombarded with unwanted advice on her political future.

As Congress workers and leaders requested Sonia to take on a more active political role, a janam kundli was prepared for her. Sonia was told again and again that her kundli was very weak in relation to leadership and political future.

But the real point of break is said to have come around Priyanka's wedding on February 18, 1997. Amitabh's daughter Shweta got married on the 16th-17th of the same month.

The Gandhi daughter's wedding announcement was made well in advance while Shweta's was a "chat-mangni-pat-viwah"— the engagement was announced just two months earlier, in December 1996. There was a view that the February 16-17 dates were chosen deliberately, as if to overshadow Priyanka's big day. With the film industry in attendance, the Bachchan wedding was bound to steal the limelight.

Common guests, such as Lalit Suri, faced confusion and even Amitabh had to rush to Delhi for the early morning ceremony in the Gandhi home after late-night celebrations in Bombay.

Sources said the role of the row over wedding dates in souring relations could not be underestimated. Petty as it may sound, at the time tempers were running high and Sonia was very lonely and hurt. No member of her family attended Shweta's wedding.

Amitabh Out As Soon As Salmans In

type="text/javascript" src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js ">

Amitabh Bachchan, who seems to be in very much love with his daughter in law, has become, seemingly uncomfortable with her Ex. Amitabh Bachchan is totally not comfortable with the hunk of bollywood, Sallu Bhai. The evidence was seen at a recent music launch of "Sing Is Kinng". The senior Bachchan was invited as the chief guest, and was expected to stay a little longer. But as soon as he spotted Sallu centering the venue, Amitabh left the place citing his busy schedule as the reason.
Well, shouldn't Bachchan be more of a sport, specially, considering his seniority??

Abhi, free hoon main

Phukat Mein Yaar: Abhishek Bachchan and Pia Trivedi in Mission Istaanbul

It's become the norm rather than the exception to do favours for friends by doing cameos and item songs for free in their projects. Amitabh Bachchan returned Shah Rukh Khan's cheque after doing a cameo in his home production, Paheli. Now Abhishek is doing the same.

The Junior B recently shot for an item number for Apoorva Lakhia's Mission Istaanbul sans any compensation leaving Popcorn producer Sunil Shetty stunned!

Earlier too!

An overwhelmed Sunil Shetty says, "Abhishek hadn't taken a single paisa even when he shot for One Love in Popcorn's Rakht."

He adds, "The funny thing is Abhishek initially agreed to accept the money but then sent the cheque back quietly after he finished shooting. He does not accept gifts so it has become very difficult for me. After shooting for the song, Nobody Like You he quietly sent the cheque back to the Popcorn office."

Sunil adds that Abhishek's item number was part of the script but there were several date problems. "He was shooting for Karan's (Johar) Dostana. It was gracious of Karan to let him go. Abhishek would shoot during the day for Karan and shoot at night for us at Film City. In between breaks, he would sleep in his van. More than returning my money, I was touched by that effort. Abhishek would be so tired shooting for two shifts but he always came on time and shot till he was required."

Sunil adds that it's great having Abhishek on the sets. "He takes over the production and when he does, we chill. While shooting the song, he'd tell me to go home, drink milk and go to sleep by 10 pm as he knows I sleep early."

Sunil says Abhishek's item number "is a hip-hop, peppy number choreographed by Rajiv Goswami. Chirantan has scored the music."

Pre-climax track

Co-producer Shabbir Boxwalla adds about the song. "Abhishek has danced with VJ Pia Trivedi. Bhool Bhulaiyya singer Neeraj has rendered the song. It's a pre-climax number where Zayed and Vivek are on a mission in a hotel to get some vital information. The styling has been done by Falguni. The dark and stark look has been conceptualised by director Apoorva Lakhia while the sets have been done by Sunil Mevrekar."

Boxwalla adds, "Abhishek is great fun on the sets. He would play pranks on the assistants and refused to dance till Apoorva danced first. It was then we realised that Apoorva is a good dancer too."

Abhishek Bachchan works overtime, and that too for free
07th July 2008 20.34 IST
By ApunKaChoice

Abhishek Bachchan worked two-shifts per day to complete his item song for Mission Istanbul .

For last few months, Abhishek has been busy shooting for Karan Johar's production Dostana in Miami. Now that the film is being shot in Mumbai Abhishek was faced with work overload because he had to complete his item number for 'Mission Istanbul' as well.

During the days, Abhi would shoot 'Dostana' and in the evening he would head for another shift at Filmistan to shoot the item number for Sunil Shetty's production 'Mission Istanbul', which is being directed by Apoorva Lakhia , a very good friend of the Bachchans, Abhishek in particular.

Despite working overtime, Abhi was reportedly his usual energetic, buoyant self on the sets of Lakhia's film. He would crack jokes and josh around with the unitmembers while shooting the song 'Nobody Like You' with VJ Pia Trivedi.

Composed by Chirantan, the song is a hip-hop number sung by Neeraj and choreographed by Rajiv Goswami. The track comes in the pre-climax situation when Zayed Khan and Vivek Oberoi go to a hotel to find some important information.

It took a few days to shoot the entire song, but Abhishek was always on time on the sets at nights despite having had a tiresome day. In between the shots, the actor would also catch some sleep in his vanity van.

And after the song was completely shot, Abhishek did something that left producer Sunil Shetty surprised. Abhi returned his pay cheque to Shetty. He refused to be paid for the item song.

Previously also Abhi had refused to accept money for his song 'One Love' in Shetty's Rakht .

Shetty says he is touched by Abhishek's gesture but doesn't know how to reciprocate it because Abhi also doesn't accept gifts.

Bachchans tour sold out in Trinidad

Unforgettable, the much-talked about world tour of the Bachchans of Bollywood, is making waves in Trinidad and Tobago as advance bookings for the show here this month have been overwhelming.

The event is expected to be a complete sell-out even though ticket prices are beyond the reach of the average fan, say ticket agents.

The star studded show that will kick off in Toronto, Canada, July 18 will reach Trinidad and Tobago July 20 at the Queen's Park Oval. It is the only Caribbean venue to be included on the show's international itinerary.

VVIP tickets are being sold at $400, VIP ones for $250, special reserve tickets are priced at $160, reserved area at $90 and general admission at $50.

Amitabh Bachchan along with son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai will form the integral part of the team. Bollywood stars Preity Zinta, Riteish Deshmukh and composer duo Vishal-Shekar will also join them. Shiamak Davar is choreographing it.

In the first lap of its tour, the show will travel to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, New York, London and Amsterdam.

The show will also have guest stars like Akshay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty and Madhuri Dixit who will join others according to their convenience in Canada, Britain and the US respectively.

Among some of the major corporate houses lending support include India's Bank of Baroda, Jack's Tyre Traders Ltd, Carib Brewery Limited, Digicel Caribbean, Naipaul's XTra Foods and Blue Water.

Patrons from Guyana, Suriname, Martinique, Jamaica, New York and Miami are expected to attend the event.

Lawrence Duprey, chairman of CLICO investment and insurance firm, said: "It was an investment honouring the culture and heritage of Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean, taking what is unique about us to the world, and bringing cultural experiences from around the world here to enrich our own experiences."

In recent years several top Indian entertainers have visited Trinidad and Tobago, and one of the chief organisers of such events is Universal Concerts Limited.

Since 1964, Indian musicians, dancers and singers have been performing here and this is viewed by cultural thinkers and sociologists as an in-depth initiative to fully re-link with the Indian diaspora who came here mainly from two Indian states - Uttar Pradesh and Bihar - between 1845 to 1917 to work on agricultural farms.

Some of the film artistes who have performed here over the years include Hemant Kumar, Manna Dey, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Abhijeet and Shah Rukh Khan.
