"Almost 50 years ago, shortly before Christmas 1978, Chris Rea found himself in London: his record contract had expired, his manager was gone, he was nearly bankrupt, and his driver's license had been revoked. His record company refused to give him a train ticket home. Then Joan, his wife, came, having driven her old Austin Mini all the way down from Middlesbrough – just to pick him up and drive back together, saving money, to get home. On the way back, snow, traffic jams on the M1, endless gray lines of cars, grumpy faces everywhere. And in the middle of it all, Chris began to sing these lines, quietly and half-jokingly: "Driving home for Christmas..." "
