Part 19 - Family Gathering – Maya’s Subtle Strike
The Pande mansion was filled with laughter as relatives and business associates gathered to celebrate Siddhi’s recent competition win. Geetanjali Devi had insisted on hosting a grand dinner, declaring it a moment of pride for the family.
Siddhi moved gracefully among the guests, offering sweets she had personally prepared. Compliments poured in.
Guest 1 (smiling):
“These sweets are divine, beta. Truly, you’ve inherited your father’s talent.”
Guest 2 (laughing):
“In fact, she’s the one keeping the Pande name alive!”
Siddhi blushed, lowering her eyes modestly. But from a corner, Maya’s smile sharpened. She saw her chance.
Approaching the group, Maya spoke sweetly — her tone dripping with hidden venom.
Maya (innocent voice):
“Yes, Siddhi makes wonderful sweets. But let’s not forget — one competition and one trophy don’t make someone fit to handle a business empire. A family like ours needs more than just a good cook.”
The guests exchanged uneasy glances. Siddhi froze, her fingers tightening around the tray. Before she could respond, Reema quickly caught her eye from across the room and gave a subtle nod — a silent reminder: Stay calm. Don’t let her rattle you.
Siddhi straightened, her voice soft but firm.
Siddhi:
“Maya ji is right. Running a family and a business needs more than recipes. It needs teamwork, patience, and faith in each other. I’m still learning, but I have a husband and a family who guide me. With their support, I believe I can handle any responsibility that comes my way.”
The guests applauded her maturity, leaving Maya’s face stiff.
From across the hall, Sandhya’s eyes narrowed, though she said nothing.
Scene 2: Reema and Vivaan – First Sparks
Later that evening, as the dinner wound down, Reema slipped into the garden for some fresh air. Her mind was still replaying Maya’s words, her heart heavy with worry for Siddhi.
A voice interrupted her thoughts.
Vivaan (lightly teasing):
“Running away from the party, Miss Reema? Or are you just tired of the fake smiles inside?”
Reema turned, startled to see Vivaan leaning casually against the railing, his hands in his pockets. His easy smile disarmed her, but she quickly recovered.
Reema (defensive):
“I wasn’t running away. I just… needed some air.”
Vivaan (grinning):
“Good. Because if you had run, you would’ve missed my company — and trust me, I’m the most entertaining person in this boring party.”
Reema couldn’t help but laugh, her tension easing a little.
Reema (teasing back):
“Entertaining? You mean annoying.”
Vivaan (mock offended):
“Ouch. Harsh words. But I’ll take them — because at least you’re talking to me.”
There was a pause, and the air suddenly charged. For a moment, Reema studied him — his playful charm, his warmth, so different from the coldness of Chitra and Giriraj.
Reema (softly, almost to herself):
“You’re… not like the rest of them.”
Vivaan tilted his head, curiosity sparking.
Vivaan (smiling gently):
“Maybe that’s why I noticed you the moment you walked in. You don’t fit in with the noise. You shine differently.”
Reema’s cheeks flushed, and she looked away, her heart thudding in her chest.
Scene 3: The Silent Pact
Inside, as the evening ended, Siddhi caught Reema’s eye. Reema gave her a reassuring smile.
Reema (to herself):
“No matter what Maya or Choti Ma plan… I’ll protect Didi. And maybe… just maybe… Vivaan will be my strength in this fight.”
Vivaan, watching her from a distance, felt a tug in his heart he couldn’t explain.
The seeds of two battles had been sown that night — one of schemes and survival, and another of love that bloomed quietly amidst chaos.
Maya and Sandhya – Regrouping
Sandhya’s room was dimly lit, the only sound the ticking of the antique clock on the wall. Maya stood near the window, her arms folded tightly, her eyes blazing with humiliation.
Maya (angrily):
“I tried to show them Siddhi isn’t fit, but instead she won sympathy! Everyone clapped for her as if she were some goddess.”
Sandhya shut the door, her face calm but her voice edged with steel.
Sandhya (sternly):
“I told you before, Maya — never underestimate that girl. She has a way of turning weakness into strength. If you attack her openly, you will lose. You must be clever. Subtle.”
Maya clenched her jaw, frustration spilling over.
Maya:
“Then tell me, Choti Ma, what do I do? How long will we let her shine while I stand in the shadows? I was Vinayak’s first choice, and now I am nothing!”
Sandhya walked over, placing a hand on her shoulder, her tone soft but manipulative.
Sandhya (low, persuasive):
“Patience, Maya. Let Siddhi climb higher… because the higher she goes, the harder she will fall. One mistake — just one — and the same people who applaud her will curse her. That is when you will step in.”
Maya’s lips curved into a cold smile.
Maya (resolute):
“Fine. Let her bask in her glory for now. But I will be ready when she stumbles. Vinayak will realize soon enough who truly deserves him.”
Reema and Vivaan – A Private Conversation
Later that night, Reema wandered into the garden again, lost in thought. She replayed Sandhya and Maya’s words in her head, the promises of alimony and divorce that still haunted her.
Vivaan, sitting on the stone bench with his guitar, noticed her.
Vivaan (teasing lightly):
“If you keep walking around like a storm cloud, people will think you lost your prize instead of Siddhi winning hers.”
Reema shot him a sharp look, then sighed and sat beside him.
Reema (quietly):
“Not everything is a joke, Vivaan. You don’t know what’s happening inside that house.”
Vivaan tilted his head, his expression serious now.
Vivaan (calmly):
“You think I don’t see? I may not say much, but I know Choti Ma… and Maya. They don’t clap for Siddhi because they love her. They clap because they need her. There’s a difference.”
Reema’s eyes widened. She hadn’t expected anyone else — especially someone from that family — to voice such a truth.
Reema (whispering):
“Then you know they’re planning something.”
Vivaan strummed his guitar softly, his tone measured.
Vivaan:
“I don’t need proof to know Maya’s eyes burn every time Vinayak looks at Siddhi. And Choti Ma… she’s too controlled. People like her smile when they’re already planning their next move.”
Reema’s throat tightened. For the first time, she felt she wasn’t alone.
Reema (earnest, almost pleading):
“Then help me protect Didi. She’s already suffered so much. I can’t let them break her again.”
Vivaan met her gaze, his eyes steady.
Vivaan (soft but firm):
“You won’t have to fight alone, Reema. From now on, we’ll stand together. For Siddhi… and maybe, for each other too.”
Reema felt her cheeks warm, but she didn’t look away. The air between them shifted, something unspoken taking root.
Scene 3: The Silent Resolve
Back in her room, Siddhi folded her trophy gently into the cupboard. Reema entered quietly, slipping her hand into Siddhi’s.
Reema (inwardly, to herself):
“No matter what they plan, Didi… I’ll know first. And I’ll protect you, even if it means going against my own family.”
At the same time, in his own room, Vivaan plucked a quiet tune on his guitar, his thoughts drifting to Reema’s determined eyes.
Vivaan (to himself):
“She has fire in her. If I can be her shield, maybe she’ll see I’m not like the rest of them.”
The storm brewed quietly in the mansion — one of hidden schemes and one of blooming love — both set to collide in ways no one yet imagined.
Reema sat quietly in her room, hugging her pillow, her thoughts running wild. The echoes of Sandhya and Chitra’s conversation still rang in her ears — their schemes against Siddhi, their plans to bring Maya closer into the fold.
Reema (to herself, fiercely):
“No, Chhoti Maa… and you too, Badi Maa. This time, I’ll not let you hurt Didi. She has suffered enough. I’ll protect her, even if I have to fight against you both.”
Her phone buzzed. It was a message from Vivaan, asking if she was alright. A small smile tugged at her lips — in this storm, Vivaan was her only anchor. She typed back quickly, deciding she’d meet him soon.
Reema Updates Siddhi
The next morning, Siddhi was arranging sweets in the kitchen when Reema slipped in, looking around to make sure no one was near.
Reema (whispering):
“Didi… they’re planning again. Badi Maa and Chhoti Maa. I heard them talking late at night. They want Maya to stay close to this house, so you feel insecure. And… they’re going to pressure Vinayak jiju slowly.”
Siddhi’s hands froze over the tray. For a moment, the old ache of rejection flashed in her heart, but she controlled herself.
Siddhi (calm, soft smile):
“Let them plan, Reema. Truth always wins. But thank you, my little sister, for standing by me. Your courage gives me strength.”
Reema hugged her tightly.
Reema (murmuring):
“No matter what they do, I’ll keep telling you everything. You won’t face this alone.”
Sandhya and Chitra’s New Scheme
In the inner courtyard, Sandhya and Chitra sat together, pretending to discuss household chores while whispering carefully.
Chitra (smirking):
“You saw how Vinayak praised Siddhi yesterday. The whole city is singing her name. If this continues, no one will remember Maya.”
Sandhya (coldly):
“That’s why we have to act smart. We’ll make Siddhi shine for a while, let her feel she’s secure… then at the right moment, we’ll break her confidence. A fall from the top hurts more than a rejection at the start.”
Chitra chuckled, sipping her tea.
Vinayak’s Unspoken Emotions
Later that evening, Vinayak found Siddhi in the prayer room, lighting the evening diya. The glow of the lamp fell on her face, serene and radiant. He paused at the doorway, strangely unable to move.
Vinayak (to himself):
“Why does her peace calm me this way? Why do I feel… lighter when she smiles? She’s my strength, my friend. Nothing more… or is it?”
He shook his head quickly, walking in.
Vinayak (aloud, gently):
“Siddhi… I wanted to say thank you. Not just for yesterday, but for always standing by me. If it weren’t for you, our family would have broken completely.”
Siddhi turned, her eyes warm.
Siddhi (smiling gratefully):
“And if it weren’t for you, Vinayak ji, I would never have had the courage to face all those rejections. You accepted me as I am, and that is the greatest gift.”
Their eyes lingered, silent words passing between them. Vinayak quickly looked away, his heart pounding in confusion.
Reema and Vivaan’s Meeting
Meanwhile, Reema slipped out to meet Vivaan in a quiet café.
Vivaan (teasing):
“You sounded so serious on the phone. What’s troubling my chatterbox today?”
Reema sighed, stirring her coffee.
Reema:
“Your mother and Badi Maa… they’re plotting against Siddhi Didi again. They don’t want her place in this house to be secure. I’m scared, Vivaan. What if they hurt her more?”
Vivaan reached across the table, holding her hand firmly.
Vivaan (serious, steady):
“Then we’ll stop them. Together. I know what my mother is capable of, Reema. But I also know your heart. You won’t let anything happen to Siddhi, and neither will I. Trust me.”
Reema’s eyes softened as her heart skipped a beat. For the first time, she realized — Vivaan wasn’t just a friend. He was the one who gave her strength, just as Siddhi had Vinayak.
Scene 6: The Calm Before the Storm
Back at Pande Mansion, Siddhi stood at her window, watching the moon. Behind her, Vinayak entered silently, placing a shawl over her shoulders.
Vinayak (quietly):
“You’ll catch a cold standing here.”
Siddhi looked at him, startled but touched. She whispered a thank you, while Vinayak’s heart battled against itself — friendship, duty, or something far deeper he wasn’t ready to name.
Downstairs, Sandhya watched them from afar, her eyes narrowing.
Sandhya (inwardly, bitter):
“This closeness won’t last long, Siddhi. I’ll make sure of it.”
The stage was set: alliances, schemes, love blooming in silence, and storms waiting to rise.
