A shot at history, a glut of storylines and sub-plots, plenty of needle and bragging rights - the men's Asia Cup is back, and so are its usual shenanigans. Including but not limited to some of the fiercest cricketing rivalries the world has known (and the drama that accompanies it), and into that mixer tonight go Afghanistan and Hong Kong.
Hong Kong, underdogs tonight and for the entirety of this tournament, are probably what Afghanistan once were: a cricketing nation trying to find its feet on the continental stage, hoping to eventually make it big, and Afghanistan are where Hong Kong ultimately aspire to be: near the highest echelon in the continental ecosystem and capable of recreating that globally.
Which brings Hong Kong to Abu Dhabi and to the big time, face to face with a foe they seek to emulate, but a member of the established order they intend to rattle tonight. All while the eyeballs of the continent descend upon them, and while both sets of fans, previously only subjected to unfulfilled promise on this stage, dream of a campaign they could reminisce over for years.
Mustafa Moudi: "Hoping for an exciting Asia Cup rather than The Big 3 (India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) of Asia dominating every time. Afghanistan have the potential and they can reach at least the finals, if not win the tournament !!"
Arsalan: "Afghanistan playing its 6th T20i in 13 days, isn't that a some kind of record ?" --
Akindu: "(Even if not win) if the associate nations give the full member nations a run for their money, itll be a statement to open up the Asia cup even more for the next edition. Heres to that..."
Galib: "Just imagine if Hong Kong beats Afghanistan today! The group B will become wide open at the very first day of the tournament for all the participating teams to make into the Super-Four. "
Hong Kong know the enormity of their challenge at this Asia Cup. Kaushal Silva, a former Sri Lanka cricketer and Hong Kong's current head coach, knows that too,
Waqas : "I am predicting at least one win each for all 3 associates teams. Starting today "
It's time for the toss. Rashid has the coin and he gives it a spin. Murtaza calls tails, but heads it is. Afghanistan will bat first.
Nothing against you,
But please don't tag me in Asia Cup games
I won’t be watching it.
I've generally not been someone who hates the BCCI. In fact, I've defended them many times in the past.
But their decision regarding the Asia Cup has really annoyed me this time, and I’m choosing not to watch it.
I still want India to do well, especially against weaker teams.
But if there’s an India vs Sri Lanka final, I genuinely hope Sri Lanka wins.
And honestly, the next time any Indian cricketer talks about being "on national duty" or claims to "love India", I’ll just laugh.
Because the Indian team would have ignored this irrelevant Asia Cup.
I really hope TRP kam aaye, stadium na bhare.
This isn’t Team India playing its Team BCCI.
If it were truly about representing India, they wouldn’t shamelessly participate in something as irrelevant as this Asia Cup.
BCCI is seriously soo shameless and disrespectful. Absolutely pathetic.
