The opening of any movie depends on

Genre

Trailer

Songs

If the trailer and songs are well recieved the movie gets very good start. There is a reason why our movies have songs. For ages it's been there for promotional purpose. In older days it was through loudpeakers and radios.

There had been dearth of romantic movies with young 20 year old leads with urban background, no small towns/no rural areas/no north and south lingo vingo with original good songs for many years which appeals to the youth. The last movie which had it was Aashiqui 2.

The north centers like brooding romantic hero more in such genre. The trailer showcased angst, aggression from the hero. Shahid's biggest opening was Kabir Singh and the very same centers showed better numbers than others. Bekhayali was a chartbuster.

Saiyaara had all those elements mentioned above.Mohit Suri is known for hit music. The movie seemed like a sequel to Aashiqui. The timing of it's release was right.

It seemed like audience wanted love story with fresh faces.

No interviews and no promotional appearances from the leads helped in keeping the mystery around them. It was like if the audience were curious about the leads after liking the promotional content (trailer, songs) then they have to visit theatres. To add to that YRF did their bit of 50% discount rates on ticket prices on opening day.

You forgot to mention the main reason..,,the performances of the leads…

Like when was the last time the performances of debutants and chemistry were appreciated ?

And btw, there are a few like me who were blissfully unaware of anything saiyaara until it started making news two days before it’s release for its expected mega opening…

A movie can open well with the factors you mentioned. But it cannot sustain on these factors alone and keep on filling the theaters week after week….Ultimately it all comes down to the way the audience is able to connect to the leads, the story and music….we have to admit that the biggest reason for it’s success is Ahaan and Aneet. Simple as that!

The topic was on the movie started off well so I mentioned the factors that worked for the opening day.I am surprised with this kind of start,at best case scenario I expected it to open on double digits around 10-12 cr but didn't see this. No one did. It seems that the audience, the youth in particular were craving for romantic movie with fresh faces.

@bold:They seemed decent from the trailer. I have not seen the movie yet so I can't comment on it.In the last 10 years,as far as performances and chemistry are concerned there are Avinash Tiwary and Tripti Dimri in Laila Majnu, Sparsh and Nitanshi in Laapata Ladies.Among nepokids, Ishaan Khatter had the best debut.

it was the perfect storm of events.

Mohit Suri- He is known to deliver all-consuming romance, and audiences were starved for it for a long time

Leads- Two fresh, young actors who knew how to act. Audiences were tired of all the talentless nepos who could not even speak hindi.

The story- yes it is cliched, but everyone loves an emotional love story. even I thought the story wasn't unique but the running themes of unconditional love, and love winning against all odds won me over. it was overall an old fashioned bollywood romance

Music- self explanatory

YRF: Adi chopra has good business acumen, he did not cast top nepos, he chose newbies who he knew would do justice to this movie. He bet, he took risks and he won.

Perfect launch- Ahaan was popular on SM years ago but he went underground suddenly, he does not even appear on his sisters vlogs. The Audience were largely unfamiliar with him and aneet which allowed them to go into the theater without any preconceived notions. Nowadays, Nepos become social media influencers before their debut thinking that this is the correct way to go. in reality, the audience has already written them off as an insufferable rich kid.

I recently learned that adi mentored Ahaan, he most likely advised him to remove distractions and focus on acting if he is truly serious. I honestly don't have a problem with nepo kids succeeding if they put in the effort. Otherwise most think they just need to do surgeries and rest will be handed to them (which is sadly true) Every single one of these star kids are wannabe clout chasers who don't even take acting seriously.

Im happy this movie found unprecedented success. It must have lit fire under nepokid's asses. All their pathetic PR tactics could not have gotten them this level of hype and appreciation.
