Final over chaos at Lord’s
As Day 3 of the Lord’s Test drew to a close, the atmosphere turned fiery in the most unexpected fashion. With scores level at 387 and six minutes left on the clock, India had a chance to bowl two overs at England’s openers. Jasprit Bumrah had the ball. Zak Crawley had the strike. What followed was pure drama.
Crawley took his time getting into position. After the first delivery, he pulled out of his stance twice, claiming distractions behind the bowler’s arm. This agitated India, especially captain Shubman Gill, who was heard urging Crawley to “show some guts,” a moment that forced the broadcasters to apologise for the language caught on stump mic.
The tension peaked when Crawley called for the physio after a ball barely grazed his glove. England’s delay meant only one over could be bowled before stumps. Gill and Crawley exchanged sharp words, with Ben Duckett also joining the heated exchange.
Jasprit Bumrah vs Zak Crawley - A battle brewing
Saturday evening saw just one over of England’s second innings, but it gave a taste of what’s to come. Zak Crawley avoided facing Bumrah for as long as he could, pulling out twice and calling for the physio after one delivery brushed his glove. Shubman Gill wasn’t pleased, and his choice words made it clear.
Now, Bumrah will be eager to come hard at Crawley on Day 4. The Indian pacer had already troubled him in the first innings, and Crawley’s hesitation only added fuel. With variable bounce and the new ball still relatively fresh, Bumrah can target the stumps and bodyline early.
If Crawley survives, England can settle. But if Bumrah gets him early, India open up the game. This battle could define the morning session.
The Lord’s surface - Unpredictable and unforgiving
The pitch at Lord’s has slowly turned into a major factor in the Test. Day 3 saw signs of variable bounce and grip, making batting increasingly tricky. KL Rahul, Jadeja and Pant showed how valuable it is to spend time and build an innings, as stroke-making became harder. Some deliveries bounced awkwardly, including one that struck Nitish Reddy’s helmet and another that kept low to trouble Jadeja.
India’s approach was to bat time rather than score freely, a tactic driven by the surface’s behaviour. With cracks starting to open and uneven patches taking effect, batting last could be a nightmare. Spinners like Shoaib Bashir and Ravindra Jadeja may have a major role in the final innings. If weather permits and the pitch keeps deteriorating, this match could head towards a gripping finish.
STAT ATTACK
Spinners have got more turn on average today than they did on the first two days.
Root, having bowled nine of his 10.1 overs in this session - all from the pavilion end - has got the maximum turn on average among the four spinners in this Test so far.
"Lot of catching practice for the slip fielders... going to be an important day on that front," says Kaushik as he keeps an eye on the warmups.
India seemed to have England for the taking yesterday, but from 248/3, they once again slipped from a position of strength with the run out of Pant allowing the hosts a way back in. KL Rahul admitted that the whole situation of him approaching his hundred played a role in that dismissal. Rahul himself couldn't go big after getting his hundred, falling to Bashir off the very next ball as England plugged away tirelessly with their captain leading the way, both in the field and with the ball.
