Congratulations to Gill for his century. smiley32

Following his century at Headingley, Shubman Gill becomes the first Indian batter to score 100 runs on the opening day of a Test in England on two separate instances (13th Indian overall). Before this series, he had never before scored a century in the first innings/first day of a Test.

The second new ball did challenge the edges, but runs came at a brisk pace as well, helping the visitors get past the 300-mark. England will fancy their chances with the new ball, but India will have to be wary in the first hour and would hope for one of Gill or Jadeja to go really big if they are to inch closer to the 450-mark. Should be an exciting day of Test cricket, the weather looks perfect for cricket too. Do join us for all the fun from Edgbaston tomorrow. Cheers!!

Jaiswal looked all set to claim a well-deserved century and also engineered a crucial 66-run stand with skipper Gill for the third wicket. Perhaps due to a lack of strike (faced just 10 balls off the 6 overs before his departure) or loss in concentration at one stage,

India fight back well from the disappointment of their first loss by putting up 310/5 on the first day's play in Birmingham. It was Shubman Gill who stitched things together, playing with immense certainty and control as his second match as captain also saw his second century as captain. Yashasvi Jaiswal with 87 runs of his own, and Ravindra Jadeja also batting on 41* overnight.

It's usually a pretty good sign when a high-profile Test series starts off with an instant classic. It spells good things for the remainder of the long tour, with the bar and the tempo set for the two teams to perform to.

India scored nearly 850 runs, had a first innings lead, had six unique centuries, and conspired to lose; England found their rhythm, a lovely tempo, did what they do best while their identity as a team continues to be polished and grow more and more mature.

What it means is that as the teams head southwards from Leeds and settle in Birmingham, fans will be enticed by the promise of another five days of top-quality, high-excitement Test cricket.

Both teams know they have space to improve even after that historic Test match, in which all things considered, things were very level. What this promises is a close series with plenty of tightly-fought games. When the going gets tough, which of these sets of players will spur into getting themselves going? That is what it might come down to.

Captaincy looks good on Shubman Gill! An innings of great maturity and patience as his partners kept tumbling around him, he has looked rock-solid and gone along with his work. A fine effort, brings up his century on the last ball before the second new ball comes in.
