I think he was always pro-Putin since he was against Ukraine. Also, he was backed by Russia in his first term.

But then Putin is granting asylum to Musk against the arrogance of Trump. Also Trump first insulted Zelensky and now gave a green flag to Ukraine to target Russia's nuclear bombers. USA is so leaderless at this point. Trump is turning out to be useless. He has no clear policy on anything - India-Pak, Russia-Ukraine, Israel, Japan, China, Europe..
