I'm absolutely 💯 on board with any and all measures to not just change caste system but remove it altogether. Most people nowadays don't even have idea anyways why and how caste system was practiced in ancient India . It was based on people practicing same type of job over the generation for hundreds of years , thus achieving extraordinary perfection in that field . It's basically a higher science, eugenics experiment. This is how God level warriors were created in Ancient India such as that when we read their story it sounds like mythology more than history. God level perfection in cultivation, artisans, workers , weavers , potters , even traders , boat makers, you name it , you have it. It is due to the caste system only , this was possible. Can we imagine people knowing all four Vedas and many many more scriptures by heart ?? But in Ancient India it was common practiced. Nowadays, we laugh when we heat about chariots that were so fast that it can run at the speed of wind or boats that can sail the sea or bridge built over the freaking sea or building a place where you can differentiate which place is a water body and what is glass . This was level reached by keeping the bloodline pure and practicing the skills within a closed community to hone it.
But due to many changes in the society, such a system is no longer realistic or possible or even necessary. So it should be completely thrown away and free mingling, marriage etc. among all Hindus should be allowed. That's the absolute beauty of our religion. It not only allows for such changes and adaptations with time , it infact encourages it. Even between different eras , you can see the caste system changing . For e.g, between Ramayan and Mahabharat.
And whole can't enter kitchen , can't drink water from the hands of certain castes those were not neither advised nor practiced widely . People of different castes would freely mingle, befriend and work together. Ofcourse , they'd practice the ancestral skills and jobs and marry mostly within their community. There was distance of living , not of heart. There was no hatred. Lord Rama himself had many close friends and brotherly bonds from so called lower castes .
Reservation is not the solution to caste system. It is infact the opposite. It directly benefits from the existence of caste system . Without caste , there wouldn't be reservations. So those benefiting from it for generations will never agree to do away with caste system . For those who are accustomed to privileges, equality feels like oppression.
If a proposal is made that no one from henceforth can use their caste as part of their identity. They've to forego , either lower or upper caste and just come under one umbrella term Hindu , I don't think people from lower caste will ever agree though I think it's absolutely the best solution for the country in today's date and time .
Like I said, our country is suffering from a syndrome of people always looking at their immediate benefit. No one is bothered about the future of the race or country or religion.
You are right. Caste system was a complicated science which perhaps worked great when it was introduced but over a period of time it was misused by the higher castes especially the Brahmins. Interestingly, there is a verse is Manusmriti which says no text is superior to the happiness of mankind and the moment something is not serving the purpose anymore it needs to be either reviewed or completely removed. It’s high time we get rid of it completely and the work has to be actively done from the grassroots by the people of higher castes. The Government has to make it illegal to discriminate and it has to be strictly regulated.
I am a born Brahmin and have always lived in the cities of India where I saw with my own eyes how much discrimination the people from lower castes are put through. It used to confuse me that the same religion which teaches to see God in everything because God is one also has the people who are being discriminated just because they were born into a ‘ lower caste’. I remember questioning my mom on things like why she wouldn’t hand the food directly to our house help rather than dropping it into her hand from above, why we have to take shower if we touch her etc.
Over a period of time , I am happy to say that these things changed. Now the house helps are being allowed to come in and touch everything including the kitchen etc (but still there is an air of discrimination against them though not as blatant as before). On their part, they are also understanding their rights and actively working on their self image by dressing themselves up well and following hygiene etc and sending their children to schools availing the local free education system etc. The reservation system is mostly a fraud because it’s hijacked by the influentials who are only lower caste on paper. Overall there is a long way to go for even the city dwelling lower caste people, let alone their village dwelling counterparts who are in even a worse condition.
Reservations should be based on the annual income of the family and not caste. The existing reservation system is mostly benefitting the wealthy people of backward classes and poor people of upper classes are suffering the most.

I wholeheartedly agree with your words about how people from unreserved categories often leave the country with bitter memories, frustration and anger because of the reservation system, how their talent is taken for granted in their own homeland, leaving them with no choice but to move abroad.
But at the same time, its also true that caste discrimination is a deeply rooted issue in our society. How many upper caste people truly accept lower caste individuals in their social functions, gatherings or intercaste marriages? And how many cases of honor killings still occur?? Even if someone from a lower caste becomes wealthy, they are still treated as subhuman in many parts of the country. This deeply embedded inequality and the hatred it breeds towards upper castes, is also just as justifiable as the bitterness that unreserved category individuals feel toward the reservation system.
Im from an upper caste, a general category. In my own family, especially among the older generation, i have heard things like dont marry someone from an OBC/SC/ST background or dont eat at their house. Why?? Simply because they belong to a lower caste. I have personally argued with my elders many times over this discriminatory mindset.
At the same time, i have lost many opportunities because i belong to the unreserved category, while people with significantly lower grades got those opportunities due to reservation. It used to frustrate me a lot and created resentment. But over time, i also came to understand how deeply rooted discrimination is, starting right from my own home. I began to understand the societal problem at large and thats why i have stood up to my elders about their prejudices.
Personally i believe reservation should be based on economic status. But even if that happens, is there any guarantee that upper caste people will begin to treat lower castes betterbregardless of whether they are rich or poor??
Change has to start with us, the younger generation. Maybe one day, in 10-20 years, when we are the age our parents are now, caste based discrimination will finally disappear.
I also wish the government would remove the caste category from applications and forms entirely but at the same time, they should run strong campaigns promoting equality and non discrimination toward lower caste communities. But will they actually do that?? When votes are still being secured on the basis of caste, is it even possible to eliminate caste based politics and discrimination??
Very well said. The caste system has hurt the society like anything. The hurt of the lower castes is visible but the way the people from the so called higher castes are made to feel because of the crimes their ancestors have committed, nobody talks about it even. All in all, the current caste system and reservation system is only for the rich and influential. The remaining people are all suffering, people from the lower castes a lot more.

Mine is more like what Raj said. I also used to oppose my parents if they ever tried to discriminate with my sc, st friends. Now however even my mom has changed and doesn't discriminate, even without me opposing.
But this caste system will never let the discrimination go. I do feel bad for the discrimination and dejection it is causing for us unreserved castes.
Not just SC ST, our elders discriminated against the people of other religions too. The discrimination is deep rooted, illogical and dangerous even. My grandmother still doesn’t eat when she goes out, not even in the pure vegetarian places. Things are changing rapidly though. The current generation is more open minded and actively making changes. The thing is we humans will learn to discriminate and create categories, class systems etc regardless. There is a huge class barrier in place between the rich and poor which transcends every other class system, how are we going to break that? Eradicating corruption from the entire fabric of the society is the only way.

Reservation mostly benefits power hungry politicians as they use it for vote gains. While i wont deny that it also helps lower caste people who come from very poor families, there are also individuals from the same castes who are wealthy and dont need reservation yet they still take advantage of it.
Reservation is a very complex issue. Why was it created?? To reduce the economic and social gap between lower and upper castes. While this economic gap has been marginally reduced, it has also created a major rift between the two groups because of the reservation system itself.
Upper caste people often feel they are being unfairly treated by the system, while lower caste people feel that discrimination still exists, so they ask, why should reservation be removed?? And in the midst of this fight between lower and upper castes, politicians are taking full advantage.
Both groups, upper and lower caste people, need to realize who is truly benefiting from this system. They should come together to dismantle both caste based discrimination and the reservation system. Only then can we hope for a better tomorrow. Otherwise there is no hope.

Whenever a caste based argument happens at home between my elders and me, i often tell them, Dont think about those people, think about your own children. The discrimination you are practicing is costing us dearly. Because of your discrimination, i lost many opportunities. Because of your bias against lower castes, i have developed a lot of resentment, not just toward the reservation system but also toward those who benefitted from it despite not being deserving.
It infuriates me whenever i see someone being discriminated against based on caste. I often tell my elders, only if we stop discriminating today, maybe in the next 10-20 years the reservation system and caste divisions will be abolished and our children won't lose opportunities to those who don't truly deserve them.
One more thing i have noticed on Insta and other SM platforms is how people mock others for changing their religion, converting to Christianity or Buddhism, for something as basic as 5kg of rice. They ridicule them, saying they sold themselves for just 5 kg of rice. But what they fail to understand is why someone would change their religion for such a small amount. Why cant they even afford 5 kg of rice should be the main question.
Its because of caste discrimination. Due to this systemic bias, these people are denied work and basic dignity. So yes, they get sold for 5kg of rice but not because they are cheap but because society made their survival that difficult.
Imagine having to change your religion for 5kg of rice, how deep rooted must the discrimination be to drive someone to that point?? I have seen many people from lower castes convert to Buddhism. And why is that? Because they face caste based discrimination in their own religion but not in Buddhism.
Even the current generation mocks them for being sold for 5 kg of rice, without understanding the real reason behind it. That alone shows how deeply embedded the problem still is.

No they won’t ever understand it fully, unfortunately. There is a movie in Telugu called Leader (which is a cult classic btw), where the protagonist tells his elders, in a moment of despair of course, the system will only begin to change when all the oldies leave. They will all leave sooner or later, but it’s upon us the youth to not let them contaminate us with their putrid thought process. I think the real problem is in the villages where even the youth is completely brainwashed.
