In contrast, Punjab Kings started their season on a strong note. However, they suffered a heavy defeat to Rajasthan Royals in Mullanpur in their first home fixture, losing by 50 runs - a match that saw Rajasthan post the venue's first-ever 200-plus total.

Punjab struggled at home last season as well, losing four out of five matches at the new venue. There were high expectations from Shreyas Iyer's balanced side to turn things around at home, but the recent defeat has raised fresh questions.

Both Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting will be keen to prove that the loss to Rajasthan was just a blip. The upcoming clash against a faltering Super Kings side presents a golden opportunity to bounce back.

Thanks wild 🐧

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are the joint most succesfull team in terms of the number of Indian Premier League (IPL) titles won and easily the most succesfull team overall in the way that the number of times they have not made it past the group stage can be counted on one hand. Punjab Kings (PBKS) have been the perennial underperformers, often a primary subject in jokes and jest. This season, though, the two sides seem to have exchanged their roles.

CSK's stunning power play scoring problems

A key aspect of CSK's three defeats thus far this season has been their inability to get anywhere in the powerplay with the bat. They have a run rate of 7.50 in this period, the lowest among all teams this season by some distance.

Some home troubles for PBKS

Punjab Kings lost their first match at home quite comprehensively after looking almost perfect in their first two games. However, this is in keeping with the unwanted trend that PBKS have been stuck in. They have a win percentage of only 13.3 at home since 2023.

The question of Sam Curran

Sam Curran was seen as a future leader for CSK for a few months back when he was pretty much the next big shining thing in all forms of cricket overall. Things haven't quite turned out that way for the English all-rounder in internationals and now, cracks seem to be showing in the confidence that IPL franchises have laid on him. PBKS chose to let him go ahead of the mega auction and there really was no argument against that but CSK still signed him for INR 2.4 crore. Now, he was dropped from the eleven in their previous match.

Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium Pitch Report

The first match played at Mullanpur in IPL 2025 saw Rajasthan Royals scoring 205/4 before they restricted Punjab to 155/9. After the match, Shreyas noted that the pitch was holding a bit and a target around 180-185 would have been ideal for them. In the six IPL games played in Mullanpur, the average first-innings score is 174. Teams batting first had won three games, and so have chasing teams.
