Jewellery those days were a sign of status. I am not sure if people those days had specific jewels and hair styles to indicate the martial status of a woman. This idea seems quite recent to me. In Ramayan era, it could mean that the chudamani was presented on the occasion of Sita's wedding and hence it became a symbol of her marriage. A woman covering herself, wearing her hair in a bun after wedding, wearing a chudamani after wedding as a symbol of marriage seem to be fairly modern ideas to my (just my opinion and I could be wrong).

That being said, there are interesting stories about the very same Sita's chudamani in different versions of Ramayan.
