Wow so he actually makes sense sometimes? It’s clear he’s supposed to be despicable. We are not supposed to be rooting for him. They haven’t sugar coated his character at all. So Usama making him unlikeable is actually him doing his job. Despicable characters can be entertaining to watch though and if you’re going to give a character this much screen time, they should be more entertaining to watch even if you hate their character. His scenes weren’t that entertaining for me, they were too repetitive and he’s a bit bland for my liking, but again I blame the long, drawn out scenes mostly for that.
You are supposed to hate despicable cktrs as a viewer but they r not supposed to be unwatchable. The performance and execution makes Ammar unwatchable.
I keep coming to Manjali where Mikaal was a manipulative and insecure husband taunting Mehwish about Faris who loved her, being drunk in front of his wife, having a mistress and then hitting on another girl in his office. Very strong similarities with Ammar but he wasn't unwatchable at all even if you wanted him to get his just desserts. Some people even liked his chemistry with Mehwish. The way execution was done of his scenes and how Mikaal performed him played a huge part in making this unlikable cktr watchable.
If Usama had played Ammar a bit differently and the Director had not made Ammar and Dania so cringe with their weird feeding kinks and the stretched scenes, he might be more watchable. There was a reason Ammar's female frnds liked him in uni or why Dania loved him or why Sadaf thought he would make a good husband. Usama"s performance did not communicate the charm or chsrisma of such a person even when he was acting like an ass. That duality in performance was needed to make the cktr watchable in his most unlikable moments. I think Usama was written to be this cktr. Charming upar se and insecure manipulative andar se. We saw glimpses in the beginning but that duality didn't carry through.
Unlikable cktrs or villains are meant to add spice to the story and lure you in to watch their shenanigans, not turn off the TV. If viewers resort to the latter, it's a writing, execution and performance failure.
