#16 Rafi Centenary Countdown
Phir tere Sheher mein
Film; Ek Musafir ek hasina (1962)
Music: O.P. Nayyar
Lyrics: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaSPoQ98J9Q
I have always glossed over this song because lbr, the songs in this album are all ek se badhkar ek. But no more. I'm listening to all Rafi songs (that I previously ignored or thought weren't too good) and rediscovering their beauty. Really, this man had a stellar repertoire. Plus he was blessed with being active during the Golden era when we arguably had the best composers and lyricists in Bollywood. Do listen to this one!
#17 Rafi Centenary Countdown
Hai bas ke har unke ishaare mein
Film: Mirza Ghalib (1954)
Music: Ghulam Mohammed
Lyrics: Mirza Ghalib
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw_tlUykgGk
Another album filled with gems from Suraiya and Talat Mehmood, yet Rafi hold his own in this single solo. Such a beautifully complex tune by Ghulam Mohammed and Mirza Ghalib manages to be sneaky (& cheeky with self-praise) in this one which brings a smile!
Hain aur bhi duniya mein sukhanvar bahut acche
Kehte hain ke Ghalib ka hai andaaz-e-bayaan aur!
#18 Rafi Centenary Countdown
Mohabbat jatake, aankhein ladake (duet with Chitalkar)
Film: Sagai (1951)
Music: C. Ramchandra
Lyrics: Rajinder Krishen
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QFRzWHgQrU
This is such a fun song made even more fun by Yakub and Gope's on-screen expressions. Typical CR and Rajinder Krishen, who was a lyricist who could write the deepest lyrics and also nonsense! Gifted! CR was another MD who did not use Rafi much, preferring softer voices like his own or Talat's, but so glad he brought in Rafi for this one! He brings the right emotion to this song!
#19 Rafi Centenary Countdown
Keh do koi na kare yahan pyaar
Film: Goonj uthi shehnai (1959)
Music: Vasant Desai
Lyrics: Bharat Vyas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ScJR0dvRkY
Rajendra Kumar has never been my favorite but I can't deny Rafi's songs for him were some of his best. I posted this one because of the raw pain Rafi embodies in his voice...
When he sings
Issme khushiyaan hain kum
Beshumaar hain ghum
You actually feel it. Lovely song!
#20 Rafi Centenary Countdown
Jaane kya dhoondhti rehti hai
Film: Shola aur Shabnam (1961)
Music: Khayyam
Lyrics: Kaifi Azmi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69KVLYZFKo4
The pitch Rafi goes to in the second antara! And Kaifi Azmi's lyrics! Goosebumps!
Aarzoo jurm-e-wafa jurm-e-tamanna hai gunaah
Ye woh duniya hai jahaan pyaar nahi ho sakta
Kaise baazaar ka dastoor tumhe samjhaoon
bik gaya jo woh khareedaar nahi ho sakta....
Incidentally, Dharmendra has cited this one as his favorite among all the songs Rafi ever sang for him.
#21 Rafi Centenary Countdown
Akele mein woh ghabrate toh honge
Film: Biwi (1950)
Music: Aziz Hindi, Sharmaji
Lyrics: Wali Sahab
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnzPdTKhjCY
A hidden gem from Rafi. Once when Mahendra Kapoor was asked to sing a favorite Rafi song, he sang this one. Beautiful song. I don't know much about the composers, but I'm assuming Sharmaji is none other than Khayyam who began his film music career as one of the composer duo Sharmaji-Vermaji. Do listen to this one, the early genius of Rafi is evident.
Rafi has mastered the art of infusing the right feel to the melody along with the lyrics.
Song from movie Picnic (1966)
starring Manoj Kumar, Kalpana,
Director: Shahid Lateef,
Music Director: S. Mohinder
Singer: Mohammed Rafi
When Rafi sings a song, it looks like we are seeing a lyric picturing the situation. The emotional feel will be like that.
Film: April Fool (1964)
Song: Kehdo Kehdo Jahan Se Kehdo
Singer: Mohammed Rafi Suman Kalyanpur
Music: Shankar Jaikishan
