The Uttarkand is in many ways inconsistent with the writings that we have read in the first 6 main काण्ड or sections.
There are 2 schools of thought for this - one says that Uttarkand is an interpolation .
In Uttarkand it says .
Ram then bids farewell to 100s of Kings who had gathered in Ayoddhya because Bharat has called them to fight Ravana .Now that is incorrect because we know that in previous kand that is Ayoddhya kand ,Hanuman goes to meet Bharat to stop him from suicide after the war.This was the first time ever when he heard about the whole story of Ram in exile from Hanuman.
Second Ravan is shown as a weakling in Uttar kand.He was a great warrior till Yuddha kand and he would Never bend.He says in Yuddha kand that even if he is cut into 2 pieces after the death of his generals and while family,he will never bend.But in Uttarkand ,he gets into fights then he is captured and then he makes a truce.Then his grandfather comes to release him etc.
If you read it carefully, you will find that, there is Phal Shruti added by Maharishi Vaalmiki at the end of Yuddha Kaand, stating that for 11,000 years in the reign of Sri Ram and Devi Sita, conducted thousands of Ashwamedh Yajna and, everything was prosperous during their reign. Which means, the original Vaalmiki Ramayanam ended at the Yuddha Kaand ! That is, only six books are considered to be part of authentic Vaalmiki Ramayanam. Whereas, another Phal Shruti is given at the end of Uttara Kaand, which doesn't makes sense !
In Mahabharata also, katha of Ramayana is told to Yudhisthir. In that katha also, there is no mention of Uttara Kaand. That means, till Mahabharata, Ramayana ended in Yuddha Kaand only. Uttara Kaand was added much later.
In 2015, an ancient manuscript of Valmiki Ramayana was found in a Sanskrit library in Kolkata. It is from the 500s C.E., older than all other surviving manuscripts yet discovered. The Uttara Kanda does not appear in it at all. So that is pretty good evidence.
However Vaishnavites believed that it happened and generally have great contempt for those who believe that it didn't happen.Boty the schools have enough reason to believe in it.BORI critical version excludes Uttar kand .at the end of the day,take away from the epic is more important ,I believe .
