Who got the better of that first day? Perhaps India, but not by much, you would think. There is enough help in this pitch for the spinners, and 259 isn't the worst effort from New Zealand. Will get more answers tomorrow about which way the Test could be headed.

India vs New Zealand, Second Test Day 1 Highlights: India ended Day 1 of the second Test trailing New Zealand by 243 runs in Pune. The hosts were 16/1 after Rohit Sharma was castled for a duck by Tim Southee. Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal were unbeaten on 10 and 6, respectively. Ealier, Washington Sundar led India's charge with a career best bowling performance as New Zealand were bowled out for 259 on the opening day of the 2nd Test in Pune. Sundar returned figures of 7/59, castling five New Zealand batters on his return to the side. Sundar, who was added to the squad ahead of the 2nd Test, rattled New Zealand after Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra hit half-centuries.
On the other hand, Indian women have convincingly won the first ODI against their NZ counterparts.
Deepti Sharma is the PoTM.
Cheers..
Good start with the ball from New Zealand with Southee getting rid of the Indian captain for a duck, and then the two left-arm spinners finding help from the pitch to create some jeopardy. They might have suffered a collapse with the bat earlier, losing seven for 62, but this game is far from over. However, all that is for later. Today has belonged to Washington Sundar and his sensational 7-fer - a performance with which he showcased his attributes and control with the ball.
A pleasant morning in Pune awaits us for the second day of what has been a very pleasant Test match so far. On a slow turner, New Zealand battled out the first two sessions, with Conway and Ravindra getting fifties. However, a returning Washington Sundar then got into the act as he ended with career best figures of 7/59 to more than justify his inclusion over Kuldeep Yadav for this Test. New Zealand bundled out pretty quickly in that final session, and then they managed to dismiss the Indian skipper for a duck as well. The match is neatly poised with the hosts at 16/1 on a pitch that is providing grip, bounce and turn for the spinners without it becoming too mischievous.
Good morning, everyone. It's day two of the second Test between India and New Zealand and we are nice and early looking forward to what is shaping up to be a compelling day ahead. Righto, who won the first day? India, New Zealand or was it shared? From 197 for 3 to 262 all out, you'd think it was India who have their noses front but Rohit Sharma's wicket in the final session would have given the visitors some respite. The pitch turned a fair bit on the first day, but this is far from being a dust bowl.
What does day two hold for us? Can New Zealand's spinners get the same purchase as their Indian counterparts did or will the hosts gain a substantial lead? I am Ashish Pant and will soon have Sidharth Monga join me as we bring to you all the updates from Pune.
While we are on the subject of day one, let's also talk about Washington Sundar. What a day out it was for the allrounder who collected his best-ever figures in first-class cricket picking 7 for 59 derailing New Zealand. Deivarayan Muthu wrote about Washington's fairytale return to Test cricket, where he burst out of nowhere and announced his all-format chops.
Flash: "Shall we begin the day with apologies to Washington. A lot of us (including greats like Kumble and Gavaskar) were baffled by his selection and criticized it. But boy did he prove us all wrong or what !!"
Dave: "India somewhat ahead. NZ Should have got to 300 . If they can hold India to 300ish its game on."
Aayush: "This is the moving day of this test already. India needs to look to bat through the day and get a lead of about a 100. New Zealand needs to restrict India to about parity knowing India need to bat last on this track. "
