Actually hamare yahan there's some system which prohibits marriage between past 7 lineages. Baki Qasim's marriage can be acceptable to some extent, as they were not related via lineage. Khala bi was phupho's husband relative, so I don't think there's a problem in that. Baki I think in south india there are certain cultures where people can marry their cousins. But as AAKMH2 said people have better choices to choose their partners nowadays. Even i read an article where yhey have clarified via data that cousin marriages are not as prevalent as shown in ptv dramas.
7 generations on father's side and 5 generations on mother's side officially speaking but even in Bengal, I have seen people breaking this rule. Like Satyajit Ray, the filmmaker, fell in love with his own parallel paternal first cousin Bijoya and they eloped from home and got married. Ultimately, the family had to accept it. They even have a son Sandip Ray. Qasim's case, hmm, I dunno, if there was a rakhi ceremony at some point, it would be difficult even in my culture. Like he is practically that cousin who is not really a cousin but is considered a cousin. He would be really skirting that marriageability line. Only and only if they liked each other so much where they were serious enough to get married would something like this would be brought up in front of the family. Otherwise, I doubt any one would want to upset the cart.
