Avan Aval Adhu 627
Hotel-Dieu established by the catholic church to serve the poor and needy in 651 AD, is the top casualty centre for dealing with emergency cases, being the only emergency centre for the first nine arrondissements and being the local centre for the first four. If you remember my post about facades and looks to suit occasions a few days ago, you will then understand why that post came to be and why all my posts sometimes veer away from the story.
Well, the topic that I broach that day for that particular chapter, steers me away and forces my hand and mind to write more about them in detail rather than bury them away like
we do our loved ones when we bury them away inside pages in small passport sized Obituaries. Yes, I do pause when I see dead people on walls and in newspapers and yes, I do whisper a prayer for their soul and my own soul. Just to add to them wallpaper obituaries, sometimes I find them being chewed on my cows and calves. From tree to paper and paper to poster and poster to cud and in the end Dung. Carl Jung I am not.
Dhanashekara Pandyan stood in the silence of the Maze that was the Pathology department deep in the belly of one of the oldest hospitals in the world. He heard the building speak to him and hearing it warn him about something, closed his eyes and placed his left hand on the wall near him and heard more. He heard whispers and wails and cries of help of mortal lives that were nearly immortal in their ghostly lives and heard them scream for mercy and for relief.
Feeling something crawling on his arm that he had placed on the wall of the ancient hospital, Dhana opened his eyes to see what was going and gasped in shock, slight fear and in wonder as he saw the markings on his left forearm move and wriggle around like a bunch of snakes that had just emerged from their shells.
' This is a new development even for our own kind. I am sure this is something new for us brothers for none of them have mentioned this phenomenon move in this strange manner ' and he did what he thought was the best thing to do under the given circumstances. He tried calling Azhagan but was unable to reach him and after a few more tries sent him a voice message explaining the movement of the markings on his arm.
Then realizing that time was running out for Gayatri, Dhana quickly turned the corridor and walked towards the brightly lit room and even from far he saw her lying in the bed with a few tubes running in and out of her body.
The two male nurses looked up at him and relaxed after Dhana showed them his police credentials and to gain their trust told them about his talk with Dr Thomas whom he had just met in the corridor.
' In fact, Dr Thomas mentioned that this woman might not make it through the night ' and looked at them questioningly and saw the answers written in their faces.
' Gentlemen, I need your help. I have an idea on how to save this lady. I am not sure if it is going to work but I want to try. Will you help me please?'
The older and senior of the two nurses asked him what he wanted help with and when Dhana told them what he had in mind, both shook their heads nervously, ' Now way sir. This lady is under the care of Dr Beatrice and there will be consequences if we try to treat her on our own. Please forgive us.'
Dhanashekara Pandyan stared at them and asked them, ' Are you sure you don't want to help me help this poor lady who is fighting for her life?' and smiled in a strange and hypnotic manner and the two nurses smiled back and replied, ' Of course we will help you sir. We will do exactly what you tell us to do.'
A couple of minutes later, Dhana watched his blood flow into a bag and then a little while later watched as the same blood flowed into Gayatri and soon flowed into her heart, her soul and into her womb and into the tiny existence of two new lives.
Where his breath had saved her from instant death and halted its arrival temporarily, his blood now coursed through her and her babies and gave her new life. A strange, new but powerful life.
Feeling a movement in his left arm, Dhana growled and pulling back his jacket's sleeve stared at the markings move around and wondered what was going on.
' Only Azhagan and I have these markings on our left forearm. Does that mean something? Are they trying to tell me something?'
