This is why Nooran was different because despite the shoddy plot and the contract hook point that had us all hanging by the thread, she made TIME for romance. She specifically designed the plot around the romantic moments. Which is why we got a good 1-2 scenes every episode. Plus YumHaj just made even the most basic domestic scene fiery as hell 🔥 Dono ka haath tha. She wrote it and then YumHaj made great use of it.

However, situational romance aside there have been good romance stories like Kabli Pullao too. That’s not a situational love story per se - again I can count on my fingers the amount of purely romantic moments we got - but the love story is good and the writing as well. Zafar Mairaj did better in terms of striking a good balance between romantic scenes and blending it with his plot. Every episode was weaved in a way to bring the two leads closer together.

KRQ is great at writing romance too. He just makes the FL problematic at times and lacks depth when it comes to FL. TMK main 123 was written by him and it was written well. Despite it being a controversial take as is the case with him most of the time. He’s very poetic.

So yeah some variety is there is PTV but overtly romantic situations are rare. Which is why people are starved for things like TB and IM 😂 Romance chahiye logo ko bhai

On point. There have been a few attempts here and there before TB like 'Ishq Hai' but of course the kind of chemistry that Yumhaj has, it has made people open their eyes to making romance and romantic scenes key factor in the story. Now everybody is talking about chemistry and love stories.

No doubt romance sells but well written and of course well acted like Yumhaj. Otherwise it becomes cringe like many of the Geo shows. smiley1

PTV has gotten more conservative in terms of themes and what they show compared to 12-13 years.

Jee main nai daikha hai smiley1. I agree. There was a 'certain time period' where romance in PTV was more open. But historically, PTV romance has always been understated. Case in point Ankahi, Dhoop Kinaray, Tanhaiyan and even before that.

There was a time in PTV from I think late 90s to beginning of second decade of 2000s that PTV took a real dip. It was a time when drama was moving away from state television and private productions were emerging. In those days viewership was very less. At least I had stopped watching PTV in those days. In order to gain viewership and to break the supremacy of state TV, private productions tried a lot of stuff. Did a lot of experimenting. The above examples that you have showed me are also mostly from that time period. PEMRA itself came into being in 2002 (btw political real reasons for establishing PEMRA is a separate debate altogether). PEMRA strikes used to happen in those days as well if by any chance a scene got noticed but it was very rare because focus was not on PTV drama and its impact was also very less.

Viewership came back to PTV with dramas like Meri Zaat Zarra e Benishan, Daam and then Humsafar. PTV found its momentum again. But even after these dramas came, that experimental streak went on for some time. But because now viewership was increasing, the things were getting noticed again. So PEMRA started getting involved more and more and drama started getting restricted.

But now the viewers themselves are changing and getting more open to intimate scenes. International audience is also playing a role and their voice is getting stronger day by day. Also, PTV wants to keep and attract more international audience so we are now seeing this change happening.

Well said. I think you described the phases really well and what the current situation is right now. There’s no doubt why everything is getting slammed down to “chemistry” these days - kuch zyada hi tbh. It’s because now people have seen it’s possible - with shows like TB, IM, etc - they’ve increased audience expectations. So of course makers will tap into this now.

Unfortunately however this type of magic is rare and hard to recreate. Every other day some scene is being copied in a different way but just not working out or creating that spark. Either the writing is cringe, or it’s not directed properly or the actors don’t have that 🔥 However, I still appreciate the effort and how PTV is now shifting towards focusing on this in stories. It will not work all the time but I’ll take a cheesy OTT romantic scene which is borderline cringe over scenes of DW or graphic violence any day 👍🏼

Exactly. I feel like that 'uncertainty period' is happening again. Terebin was a massive hit. Every channel and every production house wants to tap into that 'almost intense romance genre' now but they are failing to understand that instead of trying to 'recreate' they need to 'innovate'. There is so much potential, so much that can be done but makers obsession with 'TB like content' or 'TB like chemistry' or 'TB like pairing' needs to end. Let things emerge and develop organically. Don't push it please. smiley1

I guess compared to the rest but they can also be very negative when it comes to shows they don’t care for
