4.36pm What a remarkable performance from the 19-year-old Shoaib Bashir, 32 overs, broken only by intervals and a change of ends right at the end of the day. He's picked apart the Indian batting with incredibly mature lines from his high repeatable action, trusting his attributes and the pitch to do the work for him, and on his watch, England have seized control of the fourth Test. Once again, Yashasvi Jaiswal was a class apart, but once he was undone by one that kept low, it was a case of damage limitation in the lower-order, with Jurel and Kuldeep doing fine work through to the close.

Joe Root: We had a good couple of days. That;s how I play every game really, play according to the situation and conditions (when asked if he made a conscious effort to play attritional cricket). It looks like the pitch will keep deteriorating. I must admit it did cross my mind (to play the reverse scoop when on 96) but it was not a great option as the wicket was keeping low unlike the previous wicket. I was desperate to get some runs for the guys and I was happy to do that today. I have used him (Stokes with the ball) a fair bit when I was captain and he can do the same with me. Seeing the two young spinners perform like that is encouraging for England cricket. I hadn't seen much of him (Bashir) before this series but he is a great character and has a sense of humor, it was great to see him keep coming at the batters.

England is in a strong position. They made 353 in the first inning, and then the two spinners ensured that India found themselves tottering at 219 for 7. It could've been worse if not for the 42-run unbroken stand between Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav, a partnership that has ensured that the deficit hasn't gone out of hand for the hosts. Still, 134 is a good enough cushion, and England will hope that they don't let India eat away at the deficit tomorrow morning.

The pitch has started to help the spinners, it's turning and it's staying low, it's made batting hazardous, but India will feel they could have batted a bit more positively. They'd have wanted a bit of luck going their way as well with 3 LBWs falling to umpire calls, but that's how the luck rolls on. Bashir was the star performer with 4 wickets in a 31-over spell, and Hartley chipped in with a couple. A lot to play for both teams tomorrow, the second new ball ain't far away and we should have a cracking Sunday play!!

Tbh if India could cut out the deficit to less than 80 runs and bowls out Englsnd for 120 then 200 could be chasable. I know it would be difficult but it would keep India in the game and who knows if we bat positively we coyld win it.

Think this is the only option left for india.

I thought our batsman were ultra aggressive to there spinners which allowed them to settle

Yashasvi Jaiswal - It's been nice and challenging as well. I've been trying to learn how to play on different wickets and make sure that I stay for a long time. It's been one year with the Indian team, have had a lot of talk with Rahul sir and Rohit bhai on how to change my mindset, I'm trying to keep in mind what my team needs. I want to play according to the situation, I'm preparing the same during the net sessions, speaking with the seniors. I didn't find a lot of difficulties (on this pitch), I was looking to think as to how I was going to bat, initially there was a lot of spin, so I was looking to get my bat in front of my pad, keep rotating the strike and find the boundaries. Looking forward to today, we'll enjoy the game and give our best.

Satya: If England was in similar position they would have tried to play attacking cricket to reduce the deficit. but India seems to still wait -- It's a thin line for India. Stokes has set a tight field to tease the batter into lofted shots. But these two know the deficit is still big so they are biding their time for anything lose.
