The first sounds heard by a human are when they are just 18 weeks old and no prizes for guessing what those sounds are. The unborn child is yet to be seen and recognised by
the outside world but it is alive, kicking and thriving inside its mother's womb. I am sure the steady beat of its mother's heart must be like a lullaby to its soul and then a few weeks later, the baby in the womb begins to hear other noises from sources outside its mother's body. But, the connection forged between the unborn child and its mother through the sounds of the pulsating heart and with her voice a few weeks later remains its lighthouse and guiding light. That is why the bond between a mother and her child is so powerful, pure and eternal.
She heard Azhagan's powerful yet comforting voice greet her in his unique gentle tone and even though she heard him through her right ear Madhurima felt his voice in her soul and
in her heart.
She did not know why she felt so good hearing his voice and she did not realize that she was gushing happy and at the same time sad tears as she began to break down.
' Spartan, it is good to hear your voice. But, please my Lord Azhagan, call me anything but Ma'am.'
' Okay, Madhu. Henceforth, I will address you by your name, although I prefer ma'am for I still consider myself your security guard and that makes you my boss.'
' Maybe, Spartan but you are the real boss, Big Boss of all bosses.'
Our voice has more power than some of us realize. Our voice affects others, and their voice affects us. Spartan's soothing voice affected Madhu and her voice affected him instantly for he read her mind and her fears in those few moments of conversation.
' Madhu ma'am, I was sent to watch over you and that assignment remains as far as I am concerned. But, then you are also my friend and that makes you special and a high priority. So, tell me what I can do for you today?'
After waiting for her reply and not hearing her, Azhagan worriedly asked her if she was okay. ' Ma'am, do you want me to fly out to Kolkata right away? I can be there by evening.'
' Thank you, Spartan but the problem is not in Kolkata but in Paris. In France. I have a few friends who can help me but I am not able to reach them. That is why.....I
' I am glad that you called me for I consider it an honor to be of help to you, Ravi and your families. So, tell me what you want me to do and I will get it done right away.'
Then she heard his tone change in a very subtle way and heard his concern when he enquired about Ravi and how he was doing.
' He is okay, I suppose.'
A few moments of silence followed her reply and then she hurriedly added, ' Spartan, you know Ravi. He is like a closed book and even if he opens himself, he will not say much. It is like when you are engrossed in a book and turn the page to find the pages are stuck. Worse is when you find pages missing for they have been torn away. Ravi is like that sometimes and you can never tell what he is thinking.'
' Funny, for I am often accused of possessing these very same qualities by my wife and people who are close to me.'
Azhagan heard her voice grow slightly more cheerful when she told him that life was not perfect and that it was unfair to even expect it to be perfect.
' What I am trying to say is that even though life is not perfect or fair, Ravi is nearly perfect and the only person who is fair even when others and life itself are unfair to him. Even though I just accused him of being a closed book, I have to declare that his silences mean more than most wise and intelligent people's words of advice.'
' Ma'am, are you speaking about me?' Azhagan asked and Madhu squealed, ' OMG! No. I was not talking about you. Sorry, please forgive me for offending you.'
' Madhu, I was just teasing you. I know, both you children very well. So, nothing that you will ever say will offend me. A parent does not get offended when a child throws a tantrum for he or she knows that the child is in pain and needs to be heard. I hear you.'
There was no holding back and Madhu broke down and began to cry. She cried for all the time she and Ravi had lost and had been torn away from each other. She cried for the dead Meenakshi and for her late husband Prem who had suffered terribly in his final days and she cried for her Dada. But, she mainly cried for Gayatri and what she must be going through after having already gone through so much in her life.
Wiping her tears, Madhu in a choking voice, told Azhagan everything not knowing that he already knew everything.
The boy who went into the dark and came back with light.
The many vegetarians in Pakistan!
Stereotyping countries and their people is common and when it comes to Pakistan,
fixed opinions are all the more difficult to dislodge.

Stereotyping countries and their people is common and when it comes to Pakistan, fixed opinions are all the more difficult to be dislodged. That Pakistan has a large number of vegetarians (Khushwant Singh, 2012) is a statement that doesn’t find many takers in India, until you visit the country and see it for yourself. Even I doubted the veracity of this claim. But I saw this on my innumerable visits to Pakistan as an advanced research scholar of Islamic theology, Hadith and Persian mysticism. Non-vegetarian and vegetarian restaurants are almost in equal numbers. Visit Karachi’s posh Clifton Road or Airport Road, Islamabad, pure vegetarian eateries are juxtaposed with non-vegetarian restaurants. Benazir Bhutto’s husband Asif Ali Zardari has always been a strict vegetarian. So was Benazir Bhutto's dad Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Despite being born into a Sindhi-Muslim household and having been educated at Oxford and Berkeley, ZA Bhutto turned a complete vegetarian at the age of 16. He surprised Indira Gandhi during his visit to India in 1972 for the Simla Agreement. Imran Khan’s cousin and stylish batsman Majid Khan was a vegetarian and had not even tried eggs in his entire life.
I remember interviewing legendary ghazal maestro Mehdi Hassan for a British Urdu daily in 2009. I knew that he was a vegetarian. I asked him, ‘Janaab ke gosht na khaane ka koi khaas sabab?’ (Is there any specific reason for not eating non-veg)? His calm reply has stayed with me: ‘Mausiqi ibadat-e-Parvardigaar se kam nahin aur bandagi-e-sadiq mein khoon-kharaba humein gavara nahin’ (Music is no less than worshipping the Almighty and true worship doesn’t allow any sort of bloodshed).
Many male vocalists of India and Pakistan have been vegetarians and that should be a matter of serious research. Ustad Amir Khan, composer-vocalist Firoz Nizami, Ustad Rahmatullah Khan, Talat Mahmood, Mohammed Rafi and many more didn’t eat non-veg food, though Rafi relished it till the age of 25. Meat supposedly roughens vocal chords. Even Frank Sinatra turned a vegetarian when spiritual guru Jiddu Krishnamurti hinted that non-veg food might interfere with the realisation of his full potential. He stopped and after a month, recorded the great hit, ‘My Way’.
