I'm writing my review on it, and I just read this. I think after publication - I'm headed for the slaughter house, either way.

Never Mind - Bring it on!

This was the reason I felt like watching it, of course not in theatre.

Animal(2023) Photos: HD Images, Pictures, Stills, First Look Posters of ...Spoilers Ahead.

Disclaimer

Please read the whole post before commenting, otherwise there won't be much point. If there is anything you are unsure of or have a problem with then point it out at the start, so I can address it.

I shall launch right into this by stating, What an astounding performance by Ranbhir and Bobby in their portrayal of unrelatable 'Animal' characters.

And that is exactly what it is, 'Animal', the proof is in the title. We cannot look at this project with the same critical mind or eye with the expectancy of analysing normal or abnormal human behavior. That is the notion with which you must prepare yourself before hitting the cinema hall. It is equally important to separate Ranbhir and Bobby from Vijay and Abrar. Admiration for their work and acting shouldn't mean an adulation for their characters.

If you have viewed the movie, and feel you absolutely loved this film, or hated it, then something is definitely amiss. The movie certainly grips your mind after the credit rolls with a feeling of mixed emotions as it was designed to evoke. It isn't a much talked about film for no reason. So I'm going to dive into my comprehension of it, my views and opinions.

For me 'ANIMAL' means Unpredictable to a large extent. I believe this was the Centre point of the movie.

One Animal (unpredictable to their audience), will do anything to' protect and avenge' a loved one, or object of their obsession out of love or duty, by predicting the moves of the other 'ANIMAL' who will go to any extreme of taking 'Revenge'. A battle of two predator's. (Can I once again just say, perfect co-actors chosen for this).

Both men have been chose to be scripted as Animals as Vijay needs to think like Abrar to know his moves, and he does. Which makes me think has he not thought about the 'Vijay doppelganger' in the making before killing Abrar?

No matter how ahead Vijay gets, he moves two steps back with every move.

- Instead of finding an alternative way, he has an unnecessary affair, for his dad he completely disrespected the mother of his children and damaging their relationship.

- Another Vijay is created that is coming after the entire family.

- He has so many health issues now.

- Despite everything, he lost his dad regardless.

It depicts well, negligence and daddy issues, can sometimes be damaging, however with Vijay it has gone to the extreme. The obsession, Is he being dutiful and being protective because he felt he is taking the responsibilities his father should have or is it from love and admiration for his father? Why is he so extreme? Maybe they will address that in the next movie.

The movie definitely has an underlying intelligence to it, which is why there is a lot of dilemma in emotions surrounding the concept which comes to play afterwards. However that doesn't mean there wasn't a flaw in the script.

I do not think there was much of a mystery in the movie, so they did not need to do the whole flashback scene to explain why they returned to America. Keeping it in more real time would have been dynamic and unpredictable for the audience. The Asrar part was actually a surprise as we were all anticipating Abrar.

What I enjoyed about the movie.

1. The fight scene between Vijay gang and Asrar gang. Three different levels of fight all nicely done.

2. The boss fight in the end with the song. Both looked powerful, emotional and angry. Both fought like men, head on and without the interference of their men. Abrar climbing over Vijay and having a smoke. The part where the others are saying, my bro can't speak and the others adding their bro can't hear. The clear indication that Vijay tried to reason, and Abrar being the worst Animal of the two rejecting his offer. The killing of Abrar - I think the audiences reaction would have been the same as his brothers. That was brutal and disturbing because so far never have we ever seen something like this. Bobby was very stylish and how the character was showing off, added by Bobby's signature smile. Ranbhir was awesome and handsome, his expression when he signals his men with his hand/finger not to do anything after Abrar lunges him forward. After the fight, the way they all looked, that one of their own has been killed. I could watch that fight for 2 hours.

3. The movie was different in terms of storyline.

4. Abrar's character showing what an animal he is in a very limited time frame, which made all his scenes impactful and gets the audience disturbed, as this project was supposed to. Then before you know it, he is gone and the audience is still left wanting more of him. That has actually been a plus point for the actor and hopefully he will have more projects. Finally a lot more people are seeing his capability in his work. The Deol's are made for macho roles.

5. Ranbhir's belly, I think the addition of the details and belly flab was a good light hearted entertainer.

6. The song, Sab kuch hi mita denge. If it was not for this song, I wouldn't have watched this movie for a long time.

What I hate about the movie.

1. The procreative talks, too many intimate details and jargon.

2. Vijay cheating on his wife and demanding forgiveness and balancing it on the same scale as murder, which was not a personal betrayal to her or their marriage.

3. No psychologist will jump into bedroom talks, Vijay's lack of empathy for his wife's discomfort during that and no objection shown by her. Same when he asked her to undress in front of the maid. Details of childbirth complications in details. The unnecessary scene of the underwear fiasco. All this could have given extra time to Bobby in his role or an allowance for viewers to go home early.

4. Bobby's limited screentime in the movie.

5. The women not having a say, whether it was the mother, Geetaanjali, Abrar's wives they were all treated like objects and used and made to shut up and shut down. Zoya was made to go and sleep with Vijay. 100% all that was shown, but mostly it was done by the 'Animals' of the movie and somewhat by the human characters like Papa, who otherwise had a reasonable voice in the movie when it came to Vijay. I think what a lot of women feel is that to show the 'Animal' characters as animals, they used the derogatory behaviour with women rather than other ways.

We may watch many movies especially from the West side showcasing violence and exhibiting misogynistic behavior, but I do not think it is fit for the Indian Cinema and it's audience. This movie sits out of the comfort zone for many, I didn't feel comfy watching this in the cinema so I found an online copy to watch because of the language used. Until there are impressionable minds that idolise and idealise negative characters played by their favourites or whom applaud violence. It can further add fuel to existing social issues and I do not believe that the movie is raising any awareness as such, because no positive steps have been shown in the movie to object to most of the atrocious situations.

Hence I eagerly await for Animal Park to see what kind of resolutions, awareness are going to be handed as a tie up on subjects left with lose ends. I do feel that Bobby needs to be a part of this movie too somehow for it to be a success.

Tripti Dumri, dikhi kissi ko? Well there was something in Vijay's bed, that must have been her.

Quite a good looking girl, but here today - gone soon actresses. Being admired and viral for the wiong reasons. She didn't showcase much, other than 60% or more of her body. I wouldn't know - I closed my eyes, I did. There was no acting, no performance. No expression. I sense Exploitation and objectification right there, but heyy! whatever keeps her on the silverscreen for many.

GeetaAnjali, Aiiii Reeeeeehhaaaaaaallllleeeee weeeshshsh shsheeee didddddnnn'tttt towwwwkkkkk laiiiiikkk theeeees. Couldn't understand her very well. Her character had shown some changes from being quite a simple girl to one who didn't mind being objectified, strong at some poiints and weaker in the next. Abrar's first 2 wives were similar.

The women's characters in the movie were not scripted well, maybe because like I said could be explored further in Animal Park or they were just there as plot convenience.

Anil Kapoor wasn't perfect, however he was the voice of reason in keeping the audiences informed that Vijay is not a hero and his ways are not right, even if his heart might be towards him. His surprise at Vijay's way of doing things, was possibly what we as an audience were feeling. Shocked and helpless.

In general, Both 'Animal' character actors performed at top notch, but the characters are not ones we can empathise with or glorify. They are animals and not hero's and the movie wants us to know that too. Appreciating the work of artists, acknowledging and appreciating a different story line or agreeing that the characters were written according to the required script is just an appreciation for the cinematic purpose and not in general, this movie sits way out for cultural cinema however and I don't really think we should be headed in this direction for future films.

It did do what it set out to do, and create reactions and disturbances you feel and a movie much talked about. Even if you don't want to watch it, you watch it.

Over and out.
