ESPNcricinfoSAshutosh Ashutosh Sharma breaks Yuvraj's record for fastest fifty by an Indian

Ashutosh now holds the record for the second-fastest fifty in T20 cricket

ESPNCRICINFO STAFF17-Oct-2023

Ashutosh Sharma struck one four and eight sixes during his record-breaking knock Ashutosh Sharma

Railways' middle-order batter Ashutosh Sharma has broken Yuvraj Singh's record of the fastest fifty by an Indian. Ashutosh hammered his fifty off just 11 balls against Arunachal Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in a Group C clash in Ranchi. Yuvraj had held the record for the last 16 years, having struck a fifty off 12 balls against England in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007.

Ashutosh took the crease at the score of 131 for 4 with just five overs to go. He then went on to smash 53 off 12 studded with eight sixes and just one four, which came through the covers. Ashutosh fell the next ball after reaching his record-breaking half-century and walked back with a stunning strike rate of 441.66. As many as four of his sixes sailed over the covers and long-off region, two went over long-on and two more cleared the leg-side boundary behind square. Railways amassed 115 runs in just the last five overs to finish on a commanding 246 for 5, and Arunachal Pradesh were bowled out for 119 in reply, losing by 127 runs.

Ashutosh, 25, was playing his second T20 for Railways and 10th overall. He had made his T20 debut way back in 2018 for Madhya Pradesh and last played the format in 2019. He has featured in just one 50-over game, for MP also in 2019, and is yet to make his first-class debut.

Yuvraj had held the record for the fastest fifty in T20 cricket overall also for 16 years before it was broken just last month by Dipendra Singh Airee from Nepal against Mongolia in the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Yuvraj's innings in Durban is also best remembered for his hitting six sixes in an over off Stuart Broad.

Ashutosh Sharma hits fastest T20 fifty

October 17 2023

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's picked up 3 for 31 against Tamil Nadu, even as Uttar Pradesh suffered a narrow defeatBhuvneshwar Kumar's picked up 3 for 31 against Tamil Nadu, even as Uttar Pradesh suffered a narrow defeat

Batting performances

Upendra Yadav's brilliant 103 not out formed the bedrock of Railways' commanding 246/5 against Arunachal Pradesh but it was Ashutosh Sharma's 11-ball fifty - now the fastest half-century in T20 cricket - that stole the limelight. Ashutosh attacked from the word go, hitting eight sixes in his 12-ball knock worth 53 before being dismissed in the penultimate over. Upendra too sent nine of them sailing into the stands, to go with six more boundaries as he finished with 103 off 51 balls.

Abhishek Sharma's 51-ball 112, well-supported by Anmolpreet's equally aggressive 87 in 26 balls, trumped Ricky Bhui's valiant 104 not out (52 balls) in yet another high-scoring day at the JSCA in Ranchi. The Punjab opener dominated the 93-run stand with Prabhsimran Singh, posted another 53-run partnership with Naman Dhir and then combined with Anmolpreet to forge a 62-run stand for the third wicket before being dismissed. Anmolpreet continued the assault on the Andra attack, with both batters tallying nine sixes each. Bhui's was more a solo effort, a rescue act that came in response to a top-order collapse of 34/6.

Openers Yuvraj Chaudhary and Avneesh Sudha hit near identical 78s as Uttarakhand posted a strong 171/2 in a rain-affected game in Chandigarh. The pair combined to form a strong base with a 140-run opening stand, hitting nine sixes and 14 boundaries between them, to punish the Maharashtra bowling.

Sameer Rizvi's unbeaten 75 off just 46 was in vain as Uttar RPadesh went down to Tamil Nadu by just eight runs. Rizvi revived the UP chase from a precarious 32/3 with a counteraatcking knock, laced with five sixes and another half a dozen boundaries, but couldn't take his side over the line.

Sumeet Varma hit a 23-ball 58 to guide Himachal PRadesh's 139-run chase. The HP No.3 batter made proper use of the platform the openers set for him, and went on a boundary hitting spree, taking his team to the finish line in the 17th over.

Skipper Tilak Varma's 58 not out was the highest scoring effort Hyderabad's chase of 160 against Jammu & Kashmir in Jaipur. Having opted to chase, Varma built on the platform laid down by the openers and put on a76-run unbroken stand with Gahlaut Rahul Singh, hitting three sixes and as many boundaries in his 43-ball effort to guide his team over the line with nine balls to spare.

Bowling performances

Suyash Sharma ran through the Madhya Pradesh middle order to set up Delhi'sseven-wicket win with his 5/13. The fifer ensured MP were kept to a modest 115/9, but Delhi's cautious response ultimately dragged the chase to the last over.

Tushar Deshpande's 3-1-8-3 included two strikes in his opening over itself as Meghalaya went down by nine wickets against Mumbai. DEshpande's spell was crucial in setting up the win as Meghalaya never managed to recover from the early strikes and were restricted to a well below par total of 65/9.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's picked up 3 for 31 in Uttar Pradesh's narrow eight-run loss to Tamil Nadu. His victims included a well set Vijay Shankar and the big-hitting Shah-rukh Khan at the backend of the innings.

KC Cariappa picked up a second three-fer in as many days but it couldn't prevent Baroda's comfortable 6-wicket win after Mizoram had managed only 97/7 from their quota. Cariappa struck twice inside powerplay and added a third wicket in quick succession to put Baroda in a spot of bother at 46/3 but with no scoreboard pressure, the middle-order finished the job easily.

Susheel Kumar ran through the Arunachal Pradesh middle and lower order to finish with figures of 4-17 from his three overs, as Railways registered a massive 127-run victory courtesy some batting records shattered earlier in the day by teammate Ashutosh Sharma.

Ishan Porel (3-20) and Akash Deep (3-29) registered three-fers to restrict Rajasthan to 143/9 in a chase of 172. Khaleel Ahmed (3-41) and Deepak Chahar (2-37) had earlier shared five wickets between them but were expensive and couldn't prevent Bengal from posting a strong total.

Allround show

True to his style, Riyan Parag hammered five sixes in his 34-ball 61 to power Assam to a match-winning 200/5 against Bihar. With the ball, the captain later returned to send back both the set batters - Sakibul Gani (65) and Bipin Saurbah (85) - in the same over to derail Bihar's spirited chase and keep them to 195/4 in reply.
