I see people using TRP posters released by channels to compare TRPs across different shows.

But people do not realize that channels play fast and loose with how the report TRPs.

GEO consistently uses Average Timeslot Rating for the 1 hour block (7-8, 8-9, etc.)

ARY ka dil chahe woh karta hai. Kabhi Average Timeslot Ratings for the 1 hour block, Kabhi Average Content Ratings (or Average Programme Ratings), aur Kabhi Average Timeslot Ratings but for some weird timeslot (like 8:15 to 8:59). The latter 2 are done to inflate TRPs as these will be more than the Average Timeslot rating for the 1 hour block.

HUM usually reports Average Timeslot Rating but plays around with how they define demographics and also sometimes how they define the timeslot (like 9-9:45). These TRPs are always more than Average Timeslot rating for the 1 hour block for the demographic used by GEO and ARY.

Comparing TRPs then based on these posters becomes like comparing apples and oranges.

I hope people really read the fineprint in these posters as that tells you what the TRP formula used is.

Third party site like PRDP uses a standardized formula to measure TRP across all shows and channels but these #s are released with a lag of few days.

Average timeslot ratings mean that calculation includes TRPs even when ads are running.

Average content ratings (or average programme rating) mean that calculation EXcludes TRPS when ads are running,

TRPs go down when ads are running because people switch channels. That is why Average content ratings are always higher than Average timeslot ratings.

Let's check the math using this fictional example:

a/ 8:00-8:15 - drama time - trp 10

b/ 8:15:8:30 - ad time - trp 7

c/ 8:30-8:45 - drama time - trp 9

d/ 8:45-9:00 - ad time - trp 6

In this example:

Average content rating is average of a and c (average trp is 9.5)

Average timeslot rating is average of a,b, c and d (average trp is 8)

Like I said Average content ratings (which excludes ads) is higher than average timeslot ratings (which includes ads).
