I hope it's not used as some metaphor for love failure or unrequited love. They are fully dressed in that scene, so the possibility of them being prisoners seems bizarre.

The fact that they are fully dressed made me wonder if it’s some alternate universe concept. But I’ve also read that Varun is a history teacher so is he incorporating his own love story into the Holocaust? That sounds like a risky take. But I’m guessing Amazon wouldn’t have agreed to show the movie if there was anything insensitive or inappropriate in it regarding the holocaust.
