Barzakh is the phase of waiting after death before the judgement day. So the people who are dead now, their souls are waiting in barzakh for resurrection on the judgement day.

Poetically the word barzakh is used for a phase between two finals that is this or that.

It is also used for a restless state of someone waiting for a decision, judgement etc.

I think Barzakh in Islam is similar to the concept of Purgatory in Christianity.
