I sometimes think the term South Asia is also pushed as convenient label by separatists and secessionists who perhaps do not want to identify as Indians or Pakistanis or Sri Lankans and are more about their identity as say, Balochs, Tamils, Kashmiris, Khalistanis.

It also helps others bask in reflected glory. Like other nationalities getting to bask in reflected glory if an Indian wins Oscar or Pakistani or Bangladeshi like Malala and Mohammad Younis won Nobel.

So my hunch was right that they perhaps do not want to give exclusive and sole credit to India and Indians and used that broader and lazy term.

Nothing lazy about it. Check out how they report negative news stories from/about India. They make it a point to use Indian/Hindu labeling for those.

This is the norm in the reporting and popular culture here.

Anything good that is being covered is under - South Asia
And anything bad being covered is under - India/Hindu majority.

I read an article about Diwali which has no mention of the word Hindu. It’s a south Asian festival. 😆

It’s the age of misinformation and setting the narrative.

Didn’t they label pasoori, joyland And even maula jatt under south Asian as well?

I’m pretty sure I saw GQ india talking about miss marvel and pasoori as south Asian representation….

I’ve noticed at least in North America, it’s mostly immigrants or first generation who takes offense as anything desi (Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani) being labeled as south Asian… majority of second generation diaspora is ok with being labeled south Asian/desi/brown

I am personally not too fond of South Asia label as we sre diverse AF and have not much in common anymore.

Though I understand why Brown people abroad use these terms or use terms like desi for collective community or culture and seem to see more in common than differences we clearly have in subcontinent now.

Western terms are lazy IMO. Like they label anyone Asian without bothering if it was Chinese or Korean and somehow seem to exclude South Asians from their pieces on Asians.

Even terms like Whites and West seem lazy to me given the diverse nations they are and every White is not same. Like we in South Asia hardly know how to distinguish between British, American for eg.

Somehow painting with broad brush does not seem convincing to me.

LMAO! How the F is Diwali a South Asian festival when other nations in subcontinent hardly celebrate it?

Though I guess they used SA because it is not just celebrated by Hindus but also by Sikhs, Jains for different reasons. And I guess Buddhists also celebrate it.

Indian festival seems like a more inclusive term.

I personally think South Asian term is definitely pushed by vested interests as it is satisfying to even separatists and wannabe secessionists in subcontinent. The idea is to erase the countries' names as much as possible, giving ample room to separatists who do not like to use name of nation they belong to. I know, like, plenty of Khalistanis who do not use the word India or Indian and will mention they are from Punjab or call self Brown, desi or South Asian but not Indian. There is an increased push from Kashmiris, Tamils, Balochs and Khalistanis to avoid using name of nations.

I did not really notice a pattern in reporting negative news as suddenly India though I know the western media uses words like 'Hindu majority' for India all too often and has used 'Sikh majority' for Punjab and 'Muslim majority' for Kashmir to properly single out communities and blame them. Western media really outdoes itself in hypocrisy.

For me, wins of Guneet Monga, RRR team, and others in past are big deal for INDIA. Deepika presenter at Oscars is big deal for Indians and India. Malala nominated at Oscars is big deal for Pakistan though I know Pakistani men mostly hate her. It's nothing about South Asia.

I was a bit put off when anchor at Oscars called RRR nomination and win as great moment for South Asia.

Why the phrase South Asia or South Asian community?

When the film is Indian? Why not great moment for India or Indian diaspora and community?

Is it regular practice abroad to use South Asian for anything from India? Or Indian subcontinent?

They being hypocrite as always

They don't call, treat and think India being part of even Asia, South Asia toh dur ki baat hain.

&

When time came to give credit to India they suddenly remembered that India is in South Asia.

They simply doesn't wanna give credit to India that's why all this nonsense.

Not really. I am first generation desi. And I call everyone desi. Be it Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi or Srilankan.

The point is — You can’t possibly disregard Diwali.

And there’s a glaring increasing Hindu hate in Western media. It’s not even up for debate at this point.

@orange — Western media hypocrisy is one note higher than Indian media. They just hide it nice under the garb of using a difficult language. Narrative chalta rehna chahiye.

The whole separatist attitude is getting more wind in the age of social media. There’s this linguistic hate that’s going on to divide Indians is absolutely pathetic.

@black bold — But the word Indian doesn’t make an entry in entire article about Diwali.
