Day 1 Stumps: Australia 263-10, India 21-0 (9)

Session Summary 31.4 | Runs 81 | Wickets 4 | Run rate 2.57

Australia would be pleased with how things unfolded on the opening day even though they would've liked to add a few more runs to their first innings total. They handled the pressure really well with the bat compared to Nagpur and those two stand-out innings of Khawaja and Handscomb are evidence for you.

The first task for Australia in the final session was to cross 250 and they did it, all thanks to the 59-run 8th wicket partnership between Handscomb and Cummins. Jadeja made his impact and got two wickets in quick succession to put the pressure right back on the Aussies before Shami cleaned up Lyon and Kuhnemann to bowl out Australia for 265.

In reply, the Indian openers were so watchful despite surviving some early jitters off Kuhnemann's bowling. The debutant showed a lot of promise in the four overs he bowled and it's interesting to see how he goes about his business in the first hour on Day 2. The Aussie batters did a reasonably good job and it's up to the bowlers to show their prowess against this powerhouse Indian batting order. The cracks have opened up a lot as the game progressed and batting won't be easy tomorrow. Let's find out what happens in the first session on Day 2, please join in for the tomorrow at 9:00 IST for the live coverage!

Stumps on Day 1 and it's been another absorbing day of Test cricket. You could say India are slightly ahead on a day when 10 wickets fell for 284 runs. Australia batted a lot better and were a lot more positive, but this pitch ain't any minefield. The occasional ball stayed low, the new-ball spun and bounced, but as the ball got older and soft, batting became a lot more easier. Throw in the short boundaries and fast outfield, there was plenty of value for shots. Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb made fifties, there were a few useful partnerships right through and the visitors finished with 263. Four wickets for Shami on a wicket that had the spinners licking their lips, but India did bowl with plenty of discipline. They needed to bat out 9 overs and the openers saw them through that. Rohit survived a bat-pad decision, Rahul got a couple that shot through, but they'll back themselves to come back tomorrow and make the most of decent batting conditions.

Usman Khawaja talking after the day's play: It is always challenging and when you have quality bowlers like Ashwin and Jadeja it is always challenging. The gameplan was always the same, it has been pretty steady from the year and a half, I'm always looking to score runs. I like the conventional sweep too. If you hit one over mid-off it is always risky to hit one again. When the ball is spitting it is always dangerous to hit straight. The right-handers get all the good stuff, no rough outside the off-stump. There is a reason India have produced a lot of great right-handers, left-handers need to be flamboyant to score runs. Peter has got a great defence, he batted beautifully today. I hope so, we got 260 and you don't know what is a good score on this track until the other team bats. I have played only once here in Delhi, last time I was the 12th man and in 2012 it was a 200 v 200 sort of game. I think tomorrow will tell the tale where it is going.

A fascinating opening day in Delhi. India's openers did well at the end and it's certainly the home side's day overall. But don't discount Australia. They have something to bowl at and the pitch is offering help. However, they will ponder what could have been with the bat. Will be very interesting to see what their attack - one quick and three frontline spinners, plus the recalled Travis Head - can do tomorrow. India's top order has some vulnerabilities so a couple of early wickets will make it interesting.

Indian bowlers went solid till the 6th wicket....but then Australia endured and crossed 200.

Again Aussies buckled on the first day.

Let's see how we bat on Day2!
