It had been a few months since Sahiba had been forcefully shifted to my room. When Sahiba’s Masi questioned her about her living arrangements, I knew I had to correct the situation. I did not want to hear rumors about my personal life being equated to the brand I worked so hard to create. I had forced my mom to agree to have Sahiba shift to my room. I was not going to let any outsiders talk about my family.
I had the room partition into halves agreeing to take 1/2 while she takes the other. She refused to sleep on the bed. In the end, I had to agree to her taking the floor. I had given strict instructions that her clothes should not mingle with mine, and she comes back with her savage taunts, “Why you’ll end up wearing my clothes if they are on your side? Would you wear clothes with your eyes closed?” Sahi mein Babaji, if I could do something to shush her up, I would. I knew of one way but since she maintains a physical distance between us, I can’t. I still muse at times how shocked and speechless she’d be when I kiss to shut her up after her taunts.
Somehow there was a glitch with the electricity today, not one section in the house had power. Being in a rush, I pooni’ed the turban cloth in the dark. It somehow felt softer and smelt like Sahiba. This woman has not only invaded my life, my sleep, dreams, room but even my clothes smell of her? Is there anything still left for her to invade?
Anyways, I was done getting dressed, and stepped out. Electricity had finally come back. As I came closer to the dining table, everyone started laughing. Keerat, who was visiting, spluttered out the whole juice she was drinking. Jassi Chachu tried to control his laughter with Hansraj Phupha and was like “What style is this Hansraj? Perhaps you should sport it too?”
Sahiba too apparently had an amused look, and whispered something to one of the house helps. My mom, hearing the commotion came with Bebe and Bebe started laughing too. My mom was asking me with her eyes why I had done what I did! But what had I done? I could Keerat whispering to Sahiba “ATM sahi mein”
The house help came with a mirror. She with a smile held it so I could see myself. I was mortified with what I saw. I had inadvertently worn one of Sahiba’s floral print cotton sarees as a turban.
I hurriedly turned to go and I saw Dad. He looked at my head, and embarrassed face, and then his gaze fell on Mom. He looked her directly in the eyes and sniggered
saying “Maa da ladla bigar gaya”.
As soon as he said this, long bursts of much suppressed laughs erupted from everyone. I wished that the earth could open up and swallow me now! Argh Sahiba and her stupid clothes! What more torments are in store for me?
