Argentina's World Cup victory is a story of redemption!

They lost the 2014 final in Brazil 1-0 to Germany, and then lost in the round of 16 - ironically to France - last time out in Russia.

"Today it's not just an incredible football story, it's an incredible sporting story," Craig Foster said on SBS.

"This is one of the great stories of redemption. It's one of the great stories of resilience. One of the great stories of determination. One of the great stories of stepping up to the greatest pressure that there is."

Messi and Angel Di Maria - who was probably the standout player in the first half - have played much of their youth football together.

Foster said that relationship shone through in the final.

Their connection in that first half was clear for all to see, it was like they were kids again playing together.

Messi awarded player of the tournament

Lionel Messi has been awarded player of the tournament - the second time he's won the award.

"The Player of the Tournament. The player of the last - I'm trying to work out, what shall I say, 15, maybe even 20 years," Martin Tyler said in commentary.

Messi also won the award at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
