Yeah Ghum is different for sure. I can write about the original writer for pages :)
It is different because it is created and written by an accomplished writer and storyteller, Leenaji. I have studied a bit on her work and she did some really good original work. Writers and storytellers are creative in ways different than screenplay writers and directors. Therefore I think, we have a different title for a director who actually assimilates the story and takes it forward with a vision..aka "creative" director. So writer and creative director are the people who makes or breaks a story.
The beauty of the original story written by Leena is that it is emotions driven more than plot driven. I was so intrigued by the synopsis of KD which says "An unlikely couple get married and eventually fall in love but could not resolve the marital discord". It is as simple as this. The story is driven by emotions of a man and woman who are built up differently and love each other. A simple story where they could not overcome their fears and insecurities.
Because it is written by a female writer, she establishes women characters very strongly yet differently. Sai is a dream woman. Everyone wants to be like her, educated and independent. Yet vulnerable for a man's love. She is not dependent on him but craves his love. Independent and successful woman too needs love. And she shows Pakhi who is beautiful and carefree girl but is completely dependent on a man for her happiness. Exactly opposite of Sai. Very vulnerable woman. On the face of it she has all but internally she is weak. Then Sruthi, a strong woman who was made weak by the circumstances and the society.
All three woman want the same man. The way Leena shows a man is also so real. As a woman, she understands a man differently. She has shown him all desirable...handsome, brave, passionate and kind. All the 3 women love him. But who does he love?. What are his emotions? Can a man be loyal to one woman? Usually a woman is made an object of desire in the stories. But Leena made the MAN of the story a priced possession. Wow! He goes to the best woman. If you have read Atlas Shrugged you can find the analogy where the woman is the priced possession. Who she ends up with is the curiosity factor. The best will claim her. Similarly, Virat is the object of desire. And how the women see him is nicely captured by her. Sai's insecurities for him are paramount because of the way he deals with other women. But Leena was not lenient on the women too. She showed the man's feelings also very clearly. The way she showed the passion and spite of Rono is not captured by Vankar here in Ghum world. She showed Sai too very vulnerable which is missing here.
Vankar did a decent job translating it here, sometime removing the repetitiveness of KD. But he failed to capture the emotions correctly. May be because of the fear of rebuke from Hindi audience. He wanted to be politically correct. And be a feminist :) He removed the vulnerability from Sai, made her stone like strong. He removed the rough edges in a man and made him too soft, Kind and silent. So when he makes a mistake, we cannot forgive him. in the pursuit of making him a hero and her an independent strong woman he lost the "human" touch in them. Otherwise, he is doing fine job translating the original. However, the way dialogues are written in Ghum and the situations are projected way more cruel than the original. The side characters have no charm at all. Hence no support for the central characters. They are too much in number game also I guess, thats why they could not dedicate one whole episode on Ash-Ninad state after sai's death or why BK is so mad at Sai or why Mohit who loved her like sister hates her now. What emotions did they go through and all is not given any significance. Therefore we tend to hate them all and expect more and more redemption from them to get Sai back. And get disappointed when they get back Sai easily. That is the issue. I think that is where Vankar has to concentrate...give the side characters more weight so they SUPPORT the narrative.
Ok I got carried way, long story short. People like Leenaji, Gautam Hegde (SNS, IPKKND) are original writers who create the characters and define them so well that they click with the audience. The story naturally becomes successful because the characters grow and add meaning to the plot well. I dont know about YRKKH. So I cannot comment. Either you should have a good story or well defined characters. Ghum has both IMO. Thats why it is successful in all languages. Credit goes to the originial author Leenaji.
