Train travel is still most affordable and easily accessible in India.

Yes definitely. Plus so many new things are getting added to tourism....glamping/ staycations/ home-stays etc. Trains are affordable + have great connectivity to even remote places. Though even air connectivity is improving rapidly now due to the UDAAN scheme of govt. These days at airports we find so many first time travelers (senior folks I mean, not kids) going to never heard of (for air travel) cities. Like on my last trip I helped a very senior person find his gate no for his Bareilley flight. I was shocked to see that that city had a flight connection now.

I have travelled extensively in central and eastern belts by train... The hygiene and sanitation conditions are appalling to say the least ....One cannot eat from railway stalls as most of the food items are in open .... Very few trains have pantry services and those who have dish out the most unpalatable food ....

Many a times you have unruly local crowd that gets forcibly into the train and go unchecked by the TTE or are waived off based on local liasons....

The conductors / attendants are least bothered when it comes to AC not functioning properly ...And the linen is soiled ....

All in all The western and northern railways offer much better services ...
