by the way, you were expressing skepticism about her experiences in the US as a teenager and as to how come she came back. Well, a teen missing her parents or otherwise finding the going tough in American high schools is not strange. Question is what she did as an adult. In her case, she clearly learned to get past it and to become stronger. People also become more confident as they become successful. And a lot of people do evolve and grow up, you know. Just dont get the negativity when she has been a great ambassador for the country.

I didn't question her returning as a teen. I'm questioning her story of what she experienced as a teen because I would not have returned to such a place.

Note that she didn't just do work in Hollywood, which would've been understandable for a person with ambition. She moved to the U.S.

Because of that, I'm skeptical her accent was naturally acquired. I'm also scoffing at the notion racism was the reason she was trying to *fit in,* because other Indians, who are much less genetically blessed, have succeeded with their authentic selves intact.

Agree with you keeping a neutral accent is important for effective communication. But that's not what her fans are arguing. They're arguing racism is the reason she adopted the accent.

The whole picture screams of fakery and trying to play the woke card to get ahead.

FYI. I work in a field where I get to communicate on a daily basis with mid-westerners who come from all walks of life. A small number of them, mostly the working-class peeps, don't understand me. And I do try to speak in a way they can understand. If they don't, they move on to one of my colleagues. But at no point have I blamed them for not getting what I was saying.

well, what can we say in that case? You are projecting too much of your own personality on to others. People have terrible high school years, yet they go back for reunions, don't they? Just depends on how sorted one is later on at that time.

I think her move to the US started with her getting HW projects. A lot of Indians come for studies, they find jobs, then they decide to settle long term. In her case, given the money she had already made, and the HW assignments she had, I would say her move was in fact a lot easier than it is for most Indians. In fact, she could have actually settled anywhere in the world. So what's not understandable about her moving to the US?smiley18

Some people like to stay in their comfort zone. She clearly wanted to experiment and cover new frontiers.... and actually, a lot of desi actors have tried to do what she has without necessarily receiving much success.

Well, all of us speak from our own experiences, don't we?

Lemme see if I can explain my antipathy to PC a touch better. I understand ambition. I admire it. I understand the urge to explore the world. But at the end of the day, home is where you feel comfortable. She CHOSE to make the U.S. her home, despite having no history here that didn't involve negativity. Nah, not buying it.

Not that the U.S. doesn't show racism toward brown people. One of my old friends, a doctor now, grew up in Long Island in the 80s. She was slightly overweight. Kids in school taunted her by calling her a brown cow. She tried living in India for a while, but New York was her home, and that far outweighed her negative experiences in school.

Mindy, Aziz, Kal Penn have all talked about their prior negative experiences. They live here because it's their home.

But what they say about their negative experiences has the ring of truth. That ring of truth is difficult to define. But like pron, you know it when you sees it. I don't see it with PC. 🤷‍♀️

I believe her PR told her to be woker than woke to get noticed among the Hollywood crowd.

woker than woke? Come on, let's not just throw stuff out there!😒She came right out and took a stand siding with India on Kashmir, that too when she was UN ambassador! She got blowback from the wokes! I think the woke position would have been anti-India as it has been all this while on other issues (CAA, farmer's protest etc, but this for another discussion). She has been anything but woke!

as for her moving to the US, here's my occam razor version. She came back to the US for work. Found more success than most desis before her. Got herself an appt in NYC. Got herself a boyfriend. Started enjoying it, more than she had enjoyed her years as a high school teen, something that happens all the time with a lot of people- high school years can be rough for anyone. Decided to settle longer term. Lives in LA and NYC, and seems to be living it up. Again, what's not understandable about her having a better time the second time around? If someone had a miserable time somewhere in their teens, are they obligated to have a miserable time there all their life?

basically, my version mirrors well-known things about her life. And I think it flows and makes more sense than the diabolical stuff people have about her.

Is the question now that why do people move to US even when they face racism and xenophobia? How disconnected do you have to be from reality? I can understand the dislike for a multimillionaire celebrity's struggles but jeez.

I can’t believe 18pages of discussion why PC made US her home? Like really? For starter, she married a man who lives her so unless they were going to do long distance or have Jonas brothers move to India, that would hardly work.

Secondly, she had bad experience when she was a teenager who went to high school here. I moved to US when I was in high school too, and of course it wasn’t fun for her. It’s not only racism which btw i and many like me faced too, there is also a huge culture shock and not to forget she was a teenager in a foreign country.

But now she lives in CA and NY, two of the most progressive states in US, she is making money and has opportunities she probably wouldn’t have gotten if she was still in India. She is totally living it up, why wouldn’t she live here? She has family in US and in India, her mom travels back and forth, she is getting best of both worlds. She worked hard for it, so good for her!

wasn't she in a tough spot in BW ( I am asking) post the affair allegation and I heard her life was made tough by a certain group which is like bullying

maybe she was pushed into a corner, she is obviously ambitous, maybe she wanted to show ppl in BW up

I agree, what you experience as a teen or kid in an immigrant/upwardly mobile setting may not be the same now, she is succesful, confident and more adept and hardened at handling stuff, is in NY or Cal liberal places, has money and can see what the advantages are much more now and can deal with negative stuff better

lot of ppl move back and forth (I did) you have better perspective as you age and learn to live with negatives better

accent she has adopted to fit in and you need it more in hollywood unlike say in tech which has so many indians, asians and diverse workforce

racism latent is there even in progressive places sometimes

there was this egyptian guy I knew who was based in dubai. He would trash the US every opportunity he got. Guess what? He got his wife to move in and live with her folks for 6 months in michigan, US when she became pregnant. He wanted his kid to be born in the US. Something about getting US passport, the golden key to the kingdom😆
