Shah Rukh Bhaiyya's Famous Five
Shah Rukh Bhaiyya's Famous Five

The kids on Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain? have captured the imagination of television viewers. Meet the little wonders who have spelt big TRPs with their spunk and smartness.

SHAH Rukh Khan's classroom in Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain? has spawned five little stars. Not just SRK, everyone is suddenly also talking about Shriya Sharma, Dheirya Sonecha, Milanjeet Singh Bhatti, Shreeparna Ghosh and Anubhav Motilal — the five merry kids on the television show who have managed to catch the fancy of the audience with their spunk, naughtiness and smartness.

These kids, or the Paanchvi Ki Paltan on the show, are there to help the contestants as they are quizzed by ' Class Teacher' SRK in their quest for the Rs 5- crore prize money. Notably, the bright little ones more often than not are able to press the buzzer and come up with the right answer in less than 15 seconds. The show, which is an Indian adaptation of US- based Fox TV show, Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? , hasn't seen anyone win more than Rs 1 crore yet. This amount is won by a housewife in an episode that will be soon telecast. The contestant who has managed to win such a huge amount could not stop thanking the young Paltan for offering help.

A participant is allowed to take the help of the kids by way of interesting lifelines such as Taank Jhaank, Nakal and Bachao . And most contestants so far, including a Ph. D gold medallist, an airhostess, a dentist, an author and a quality analyst, have only managed to answer correctly with liberal help from the little ones. This is precisely the aspect that has made these five kids instant stars. So, how did Star TV manage to rope in this hit gang of five? The kids, it turns out, were shortlisted after a tough screening of over 40,000 super- brainy children from various schools in Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh. The process had to guarantee a perfect combination of brilliance and attitude, so the children were first made to sit down for a written test based on a set syllabus. This was followed by a series of interviews. The academic records of the aspirants were taken into account. And finally, the kids had to give an audition test to check if they were camerafriendly. In fact, 10 students were shortlisted for the show — five others have been kept as stand- by options.

Anita Kaul Basu, executive producer of Synergy Adlabs, producers of the show, says that she gets numerous calls everyday from people who refuse to believe that the children can actually answer the questions that seem tough even for the grown- up participants. " The fact is that we have picked five kids who are brilliant and have the aptitude to learn things fast," she clarifies. " The kids look prepared on the show because they are given study material on the sets and there is a time allotted for them to brush up their knowledge on the subjects that will be featured in a particular episode. At no stage are the kids told what questions will be asked, or what the correct answers are." In the two weeks that show has been on air, the kids have sure developed a fan following. In fact, two of these five children are already used to fan following, due to their exposure to showbiz. Shriya has been working for the past seven years, starring in Kasautii Zindagi Kay , besides commercials for Whirlpool and Rasna, and has turned down Deepa Mehta's Water in the past. And Dheirya, the Harry Potter lookalike, has worked in various adfilms, including ones for Mangola and Horlicks. " But we didn't cast these kids knowing that they had already appeared in ad- films, films or serials," counters Anita Kaul Basu. " Like the others, they too had too qualify through stringent tests."

Besides their brilliance, these kids have also captured audience imagination with their energy. It's a gruelling schedule for them. Although most of the shoots are happening during the summer holidays, there is no vacation for these kids. They have to wake up early, report at the set by 8 am and shoot till 10.30 pm. The over- 14- hour grind sees them playing pranks, fooling around, dancing and playing with their favourite Shah Rukh Bhaiyya, besides brushing up their knowledge with the given study material. " These kids are so energetic that even after pack- up they have the zest to invite SRK to play with them," says Kaul Basu.

In all this, Shah Rukh has developed a chemistry with the kids. " Shah Rukh helps them understand the topics, goading them on by saying how his son Aryan too reads the same subjects in school. He is very involved with his own kids. That's the reason why he can identify with these five kids too," says Kaul Basu. Of course, even the parents of the kids are smitten by Shah Rukh Khan. Says Deepankar Ghosh, father of Shreeparna Ghosh: " One big reason why I agreed to allow my daughter to participate in the show is because of the charisma of SRK. He personally takes care of each of the kids, plays carrom and table tennis with them on the set, dances with them and constantly plays pranks on them." In the show, SRK signs off by narrating a story to the kids, which he calls Khan Ki Kahaniyan . " On the sets, too, he is often seen narrating amazing stories to the kids. He will first make them believe that all that he says is true, and when the kids start believing him with their jaws dropped, he bursts out laughing and says, ' fooled yaaa'! They have a great time together. I think that bonding is a major reason why the show has clicked," says Kaul Basu.

Well, we all know about Shah Rukh Khan. Here, we take a closer look at the five super kids, without whom Paanchvi Pass wouldn't have been the same.

DHEIRYA
STUDIES IN: Standard IV at Veer Bhagat Singh Vidyalaya, Mumbai
CONNECT WITH SRK: " He pampers me a lot, and I enjoy it. Shah Rukh Bhaiyya is not only friendly and famous, he is also very bright. He knows most of the answers without even looking into the books."
KING KHAN'S TAKE: " He is my beloved Harry Puttar."
AMBITION: Wants to be a pilot.
FACTFILE: Dad Kalpesh Sonecha is a clothes merchant and mom Payal is a homemaker. " We ensure that Dheirya maintains a perfect balance between studies and advertising. He has never bunked school to shoot an ad- film, as his mother ensures that the shooting takes place only on days when the school is closed," says Kalpesh. In fact, mom Payal is clear that Dheirya takes up only two to three advertisement projects at a time, so that he doesn't miss out on studies — a reason why he has never scored less than 95 per cent in school. Says Payal: " Dheirya is hyper active, but intelligent. He is very clever. You cannot make out what's going on in his mind." His favourite subjects are maths, science, Hindi and social studies. " Besides studies, I also love participating in extracurricular activities involving oratory skills and I anchor my school's annual functions," says Dheirya. This chirpy boy knows how to best use his cute smile and Harry Potter image, especially when he is caught doing mischief in school.

SHREEPARNA
STUDIES IN: Standard V at Ryan International, New Delhi
CONNECT WITH SRK: " I love Shah Rukh Bhaiyya's friendly approach. He can strike friendship with anybody instantly. Even my parents have become his fans."
KING KHAN'S TAKE: " She is my favourite Miss Chatter Patter."
AMBITION: Wants to be a doctor.
FACTFILE: Shreeparna's dad Debashish Ghosal is a manager at Engineers India, while mom Moushumi is a homemaker. She has always been a topper, never having stood second in class since her kindergarten days. Shreeparna is a sprightly kid who loves to dare friends in school and her colony to knowledge games, something that has made her friends give her the name Mobile Encyclopedia. Her forte comprises maths, social studies and English. " Give her some mathematical riddles, and Shreeparna will solve them in no time," says dad Debashish. " I love making friends and love talking to them constantly," says Shreeparna, who has a natural ability to keep the unit members in splits with her chatter. Thus, she is aptly called Miss Chatter Patter by Shah Rukh. Will her disciplinarian father allow her to take up a career in showbiz later? " It's too early to consider that — at this stage it is a hypothetical question," says Debashish. " At home, we never switch on the TV set before 9 pm, when Shreeparna and her elder sister finish their homework and the family settles down for dinner."

SHRIYA
STUDIES IN: Standard VI at Lokhandwala Foundation School, Mumbai CONNECT WITH SRK: " Shah Rukh Bhaiyya can speak so much, so well. I want to be camera friendly just like him. He pampers me a lot and makes me feel like a princess."
KING KHAN'S TAKE: " She is my little princess."
AMBITION: Wants to be an astronaut, but wouldn't mind working in films if she gets to work in a project like Taare Zameen Par .
FACTFILE: Her dad Vikas Sharma is an engineer and her mother Ritu is a homemaker. Shriya's brush with showbiz began when she started modelling at the age of three. " Her mom ensures that Shriya takes her studies seriously. Her shooting schedules are planned in such a way that she doesn't have to miss school. In fact, that is the reason we have turned down more than 20 film offers for Shriya, including Deepa Mehta's film Water ," says Vikas. Shriya, who has modelled for Rasna and Whirlpool among other ad- films, says: " I always want to be the topper in class." That's the reason why her mom can be seen carrying her school books even to the sets of Paanchvi Pass , and Shriya can be spotted finishing school work inside her vanity van during breaks. Thanks to such dedication, Shriya managed good marks in her final exams that ended recently.

MILANJEET

STUDIES IN: Standard V at Delhi Public School, Chandigarh
CONNECT WITH SRK: " Shah Rukh Bhaiyya is the best teacher that I have met. That apart, he can dance well, sing well, loves to joke all the time, and yet is serious about work. He can give a shot in one go."
KING KHAN'S TAKE: " Say Balle Balle with Milli Puttar."
AMBITION: Wants to be an electronic engineer like his parents.
FACTFILE: His parents Gagandeep Singh and Amardeep Kaur are electronic engineers. " He is the school prefect and has won several prizes in contests like Maths Olympiad. He has also been adjudged best orator in school," says his proud dad. Milanjeet's strong areas are geography, science, social studies and English. Shah Rukh's Milli Puttar is typified by his Balle Balle brand of mirth on the sets. Milanjeet knows how to get the best of both the world — he is serious when he sits down to study and enjoys to the hilt when it is time to play. " He has always been a sincere student and we have never actually forced him to do his homework," says dad Gagandeep, who stresses largely on academics. Says Milanjeet: " Rather than waste time watching television, I love to play in the park." Although Milanjeet has what it takes to make it big in showbiz, his dad is practical: " He should achieve academic excellence first. I would like him to be a lawyer like his grandfather, although he says that he wants to be an engineer."

ANUBHAV

STUDIES IN: Standard IV at St. Mary's School, New Delhi
CONNECT WITH SRK: " I am a fan of his dressing sense. In fact, I have already started dressing like Shah Rukh Bhaiyya. And I love to dance with him."
KING KHAN'S TAKE: " Don't take panga with Mini Dada."
AMBITION: Wanted to be a chef till he came on the Paanchvi Pass show. But after meeting Shah Rukh Khan, Anubhav has changed his mind. He now wants to be a superstar actor like his idol.
FACTFILE: Anubhav's dad Nityananda Motilal is a regional business manager with Wipro, and mom Sumitra Motilal works in the home ministry. Mini Dada, as Shah Rukh Khan has fondly named him, admits that he loves to take panga with the adult participants. The tech- savvy nine- year- old's areas of expertise are general knowledge, English and Hindi. Currently, Anubhav's mom is accompanying him on the sets of Paanchvi Pass in Mumbai. " I am surprised by his energy level. I get tired after the hectic schedule, but not him. He seems to be enjoying his stint in front of the camera," says mom Sumitra. Anubhav, for one, is pleasantly surprised by the steady rise in his fan following. " I love being recognised on the streets," he says. " I am just waiting to go back to school, so that I can tell my friends all the interesting stories about the shooting and about Shah Rukh Bhaiyya." Has the showbiz bug bitten him? " We don't mind if he takes up acting as his profession, provided he works hard at it and strives to be the best," says Sumitra.

SRK explains why he is always on TV

It is true that Shah Rukh's fans do not get tired of watching him on TV again and again. However, SRK believes that it is TV that is concentrating more on him and not vice versa.

"I am only doing PP this year and it is also not a long season but it still looks like I am on television throughout. That is because nowadays there are 40 cameras, OB vans and all. Films are also being promoted so much more on television," he explains.

But SRK says he is not too flustered about it. He reasons, "The media has been very kind to me and this relationship has been nurtured over the years. They have played a big part in my promotions – be it my team or my show."

To watch more of SRK, tune in to Paanchvi Pass every Friday –Sunday at 8pm.
