Modern Love: Mumbai

Raatraani - A celebration of the most important love of all - learning to love yourself.

Baai - A heartwarming queer love story that weaves around the complexities of family.

Mumbai Dragon - This episode gives us the melodramatic overbearing mother from a unique perspective. I was born and raised in Bombay and knew surprisingly little of the city's Chinese community. This short opened me to a new aspect of the city.

My Beautiful Wrinkles - By far the weakest story with underdeveloped characters. It delves into a complex attraction that makes me wish was so much better.

I Love Thane - A surprisingly organic and refreshing love story in the era of online dating and swiping.

Cutting Chai - The most Bombay story of them all. Although, a fluffy and inconsequential story it captures the soul of the city the most.

Dear White People S4

An interesting musical take on the final year of Winchester College's black activists. The narrative shows our characters in a semi dystopian pandemic future reconnecting to reminisce on their senior year. It is a year fraught with the new kids challenging the old guard and the delicate dance between idealism and realism. Some of it lands and some of it doesn't. The show also tries to straddle wokeness with the original movie's irreverence and sass. I personally, wish it were more irreverent and sassy.

Moon Knight

You need to watch Moon Knight with full attention to navigate Marc Spector's dissociative identity disorder, his blackouts, and hallucinations. The series also explores some heartbreakingly dark areas as some episodes explore the cause of his disorder.

Oscar Isaac who is a talented actor has a lot of fun playing different versions of Marc. We have a few Britain based superheroes now. I wonder how they will fit into the larger MCU.

Jayeshbhai Jordaar- Concept isn't out of blue as it focuses on female infanticide though with a satire. I liked Siddhi & Jayesh's bond. Even actress playing Mudra was decent. Though it was light-hearted, I do feel something's amiss & the execution could've been better with Jayeshbhai Jordar's parents (Boman Irani & Ratna Pathak Shah). I felt certain places, comed was dehydrated. Scenes between Siddhi, Jayesh & Mudra were much better to watch as there were palpable nuances.

Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

The film is slick in its special effects and visuals. The scope of the storytelling is also expansive introducing us to so many new worlds. The performances are top-notch. Sadly, the story lacks heart. Barring Wanda Maximoff and Stephen Strange, none of the characters get to grow and transform. But even Stephen's transformation is not as emotional as Wandas.

Senior Year

A fun throwback film for nineties kids. It reminded me of Rodney Dangerfield's Back to School, but for our generation. It can be silly at times but it is good fun.

Panchayat 2: Not worth it. Too slow, tedious and boring to watch. Lacked entertainment. First season was good. They could have avoided this one.

I watched Jersey this weekend. An out n out Shahid Kapur film with one of his best performances. He was really awesome in that movie. Mrunal was good too. However her character should have been explored more. It just didn't make sense as to why her character Vidya was behaving in a certain way. Spoilers ahead: for example, when Arjun asked Vidya money to buy a gift for their son on his birthday she flatly refused saying she has money but she won't give him. I found that behavior more rude to the little kid than Arjun. Also, they didn't show why she was against Arjun playing cricket again when she wanted him to do something rather than sitting at home doing nothing.

The climax was sad but beautiful. Overall the movie was boring but Shahid, Mrunal and Pankaj Kapur gave their finest performances.

Panchayat 2 :

I think I was not really entertained by the sequel as the first part was. But later I read a review which made me reconsider the sequel in a new light.

The story began with Abhishek's perspective , who was the outsider to the village. So you get acquainted with Phulera just as Abhishek did- the ennui and stillness of village life, his bemusement (bordering on contempt) with the antics of the varied characters that reside there.

But in this season, you see more of these characters in depth, making you not just a spectator to their lives( as Abhishek is)- but that they are flesh and blood people in their own right, with joys, sorrows and aspirations of their own. The ending was again poignant and what befalls Abhishek at the end is also intriguing...So I am pumped up to see what happens next. Waiting for S3!

Mahabharat Murders: It's a magical blend of mythology and thriller genre. A masterpiece Bengali web series.
