Yes, the story worked because Imlie wasn't a mere reactionary bimbo back then...her convictions literally and figuratively drove the story. Her strong convictions enabled her to surmount obstacles like forced marriage & making the transition to a completely unfamiliar city life. I've noticed this is a prerequisite for top TRP shows...the TRP audience needs a FL they can root for. It is almost impossible to root for the current Imlie because she has been rendered completely hollow and she also seems to be bipolar.😆Pehle she was Imlie from Pagdandiya...now she's simply Mrs Imlie Aryan Singh Rathore, the wife of some billionaire businessman.😆 She is a recently cloned addition to the rows of rows of saree and jewellery clad bhashan giving bahus who depend on their omnipotent patis for everything. She does not have an identity of her own anymore.
I also think the juxtaposition of villagers versus city people also worked well for the story, with the makers addressing the prejudices of both camps and showing Aditya as the intermediary between them. In fact, notice how the downfall of the show started when the PD backdrop was erased from the show? I've always said that PD is the heart of the show because that's where all the important transitions happened...not just in the main couple but in the overall storyline as a whole. Not to mention PD is where Imlie's roots lie...when you erase PD from the story, you erase the source from which Imlie draws her convictions...and you erase Imlie's identity too.
If the show was doing a commentary on urban classism like some people like to imagine, it only managed to show that the city peoples' perspective on morality and progression trumped the villagers'. It is from this sense of moral superiority that people like to tout that Imlie's convictions in her village roots and faith were the naive delusions of a teenager who's the victim of societal conditioning... the same people (who unsurprisingly are elitist Didi supporters) talking about classism is hilarious.😆 The lack of self-awareness is extraordinary.👏 What is more classist than supplanting the FL's villager identity with a new 'identity' carved in the image of new ‘cool,’ urbane & rich hubby?😆 Why is Imlie now wearing ASR-like sunglasses and imitating his mannerisms, dialogues & slow-mo poses? Khud ki koi personality nahi hai kya?😆Slow claps for this kind of 'progression'.👏I have to say that for all of Aditya's faults, he never once tried to change Imlie. He was never ashamed of her appearance, clothes and dialect and preferred to change himself to fit in to her environment than vice versa (as we saw in PD3).
ROFL...pretentious Om and his pretentious fans. It's not surprising to see the same things repeated with ASR fandom.😆Truly, aam aadmi ki koi aukaat nahi hai...only rich businessman with 'swagger' are allowed to be egoistic, rude, manipulative & bulldoze their way into everything.
Main baat yeh hai ki logon ko aise chep MLs achche lagte hai...ones who are physically dominant and 'handle' the FL by constantly manhandling her and making her decisions for her.😆 Aditya ne kabhi ye sab nahi kiya iss liye he didn't inspire these kind of fantasies about him.😆
Oh absolutely agree on the village v/s city divide also working well as a basis for the show when it started....set it apart from the typical Gul show where FL is usually small town waali to show how "unsophisticated" she is but otherwise all puffed with her sense of moral superiority....lol in most Gul shows, the ML never enters the FL's world and it's always focused more on the ML's world that the FL enters and "transforms" lol.....here, the story began in the FL's world that the ML entered and circumstances binded them together almost instantaneously.....before shifting the action to the city but even then the connect back to the village was maintained and used as an anchor for Imlie's story - that is why those first 6 months worked and kept them at 3+.
ROFL bang on assessment from you regarding the sense of moral superiority from those who claim that Imlie's roots and values were all regressive social conditioning to be dismissed, dismissing her every outlook/perspective on life since she is from the village while city bred people know better automatically?😆....lol Didi bhakts pontificating on elitism will always remain next level ironic comedy 😆....since they are all willfully blind to the same woman's elitism since day one covered up in the garb of eshaans and meherbaanis on "bechaari gaaon ki ladki".....lol
Have you seen Decoupled by any chance? lol there is an episode in there where Madhavan's character mocks the so called liberal lady running an NGO for domestic violence victims....and there's a scene where she keeps asking one of them to talk about their pain and suffering while making sympathetic faces about what a mahaan aatma she is helping "victims"....lol that feels relevant to these people also who have decided on Imlie's behalf what she was TRULY "suffering" and how only latching on city values will make her "progress" away from "regressive social conditioning"😆.
And yes, saari baaton ki ek baat yehi hai ki they were dying for some ML who imposes himself on the FL physically....lol Adi didn't do that enough and on top of that bigamy kar di which apparently is the sin to end all sins😆....so out come the endless explanations of "social conditioning holding Imlie back" and only dangal with rich creep will make her "progress"....lol it's beyond laughable that ek muh se yeh log gyaan dete hain about how Imlie was in the wrong social conditioning just cuz she was with Adi and dusre muh se they hail her dangal/biting/girna padna with ASR all day just cuz he's a rich city guy who makes pretentious hollow claims😆.....
End mein baat woh pretentious waali moral superiority ki hi hai then....lol Adi was always a more rooted guy despite being from the city.....that is why he connected with village waali Imlie instantly....meanwhile ASR bhagwaan needed to constantly force, drag, psychologically gaslight, manipulate his way into unmaking that village girl and then remaking her into his image as city wife.....lol and that is now the "right" social conditioning you see😛😆
Cuz baat toh wahin hai ki where is Imlie's career now also? lol these same people who claimed ASR bhagwaan is her grand mentor who will put her on the right career path away from Adi and his life's problems....lol this is that path? Doing sari parade as his wife? 😆.....they have all been proven laughable from the moment they hailed that Imlie being coerced into shaadi is all well and good as long as she's married to Aryan bhagwaan in any way.....lol yeh log gyaan denge on "social conditioning"😆
Arey Om ka case toh feels like even bigger comedy to me in hindsight yaar😆......kabhi logon ko Om ko hail karna hota hai since he wasn't typical rude businessman supposedly initially....then the same people are hailing ASR as "powerful character" cuz he is businessman jisne swoop in karke ek simple newspaper khareed liya and started moving people around like pawns😆.
We didn't like Shivaay cuz he was "powerful businessman".....lol well for me toh personally I liked him for his genuine love for family and his protectiveness for them which wasn't built on pretentious bhaashans and 2 Rs badla😆....heck even the Shivaay grappling with people targeting his family had more conviction than ASR and his Jeeju ka badla😆.....but logon ko bas labels mein interest hai isliye kabhi Om ko chadhaao as "different" and ab is ASR ko.....lol when the commonality is the same empty pretentious dialogues and in the latter's case, a career built on tearing others down😆
