Chapter 97
To Battle
Her thoughts circled in her mind after things had settled for the night. They wouldn’t let her sleep, just like the countless other threats surrounding them. Though she gave her consent and convinced Abhay to let her take part, she wanted to try one last thing in hopes she could take it all back. Abhay wouldn’t mind; he wanted her out of this conflict to begin with. But if this last resort couldn’t do anything to fix things, then she had no other choice. Desperation drove her thoughts and decisions. It held her tight in its control. The silence and stress were slowly killing her on the inside. The hourglass pendant that Past gifted her glowed between her fingers and shed a bright light in the room. Light began to irritate her. The dark suited her better now, where he was. She looked around her shoulders, and hoped it wasn’t noticeable to the rest of the family outside.
She heard the sound of chimes in her mind. It brought tears to her eyes, now closed for a moment. Those tears rolled down her cheeks and dripped onto the floor.
You called?
Two feet softly touched the floor like feathers. Horatia stood before her, possibly for the last time, arms behind back and heels rocking up and down. She smiled. Piya nodded, and clenched her fist, feeling nothing within it. The pendant was gone, expended after the promised amount of uses. Just one.
Horatia hugged her and gave her a wistful smile. Unusual of her, but welcoming. She shook her head, looking down.
I know what you want. But it is not my call. Turning your body back in time again, now that far back, it will kill you. I can’t. I’m sorry.
Piya shook her head frantically, tears welling up in her eyes. She hugged Horatia back twice as hard, desperate to not let that one last hope slip from her fingers. She didn’t want to believe it, though Horatia would never lie to her. She had foolishly wasted a use of Time’s help. She should have known better.
Don’t worry. You don’t need my help. You are strong enough. Good luck.
Horatia gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder, along with her concise encouragement, before vanishing. Piya didn’t believe it. She was afraid. Weak and afraid. All she could do was cower and cry. From what angle could one call her strong? The door opened, and Abhay came back inside with a plate in his hands, her favorite fruits. He heard her smothered sobs. Leaving everything on the side table, he rushed to her side.
Jaan?
She hastily wiped her tears and stood up with him, though her back was faced towards him. He hugged her from behind and sighed, kissing her hair.
What happened?
She shook her head, and forced composure.
Nothing. It’s not important.
—————————————————————————
Dehradun wasn’t the only place where mysterious deaths were on the rise. It was only one of many. And Piya was now standing in some open field of one of those places. The air was cold enough to sting her bare skin on her arms, raising goosebumps.
She went from feeling too many emotions to feeling close to none at all. Tears had dried up, and she was only there to do what was expected of her. She stared at her hand, knowing that a single touch from her could be quite advantageous. That’s all she understood at the moment, and all that she wanted to understand at all. If this would speed things up, so be it.
Around her feet, a mix of disintegrating bodies and ash mixed into the soil. Death was just around the corner, but she couldn’t see it until after it was too late. Along with the barrier of shadow that Abhay created around her, there were several, more ancient supernatural acting as guards. Iolanda was one of them, passing her a smile now and then, not wanting to get her own hands too dirty. She already led the effort last time.
The stone rested fully in Piya’s hands. All she had to do was think, think of giving its power to her side. She could see its effect immediately, especially on Abhay. He didn’t tire, nor did the glow vanish from his face. His added strength could not be contained. Around her, just at a few feets distance, they killed to protect her. Abhay was just nearby. Occasionally she could see his eyes through the dark, still oddly comforting.
At first, she thought she was only capable of using the power with a touch. After using it for a few days, along with the remaining stone being nearby, she began to just use her mind to incinerate the carriers of dark magic. Any Vitael that came near her, a touch or thought was all it would take for them to vanish into oblivion. Corrupted souls wiped from the face of the Earth. They burnt to a crisp in front of the group, ash dusting her feet too. Soon, she would be able to use it faster, so those immediately around her wouldn’t have to lift a finger.
Abhay looked back, worrying about the remorseful expression on her face. He wanted to deny it all the same, but as the mark on her souls dictated, she was a part of this world now. No one in this world had clean hands. Not even the innocent human he loved so much.
Jaan? Are you alright?
He knew it was a stupid question to ask; her face said it all. Yet he couldn’t help but ask. He asked her at every chance, if she wanted to stop. She always said no.
Blasts of magic and swipes of weaponry came too close to his face quite a few times. Those protecting Piya could finish stragglers in the blink of an eye if they got too close. Some tried to decend from treetops, only to get impaled through the hearts and heads by not so forgiving fairies. Piya took care of the rest, mind numbed to it all.
She looked at the starry sky once and sighed. It was perfect for quiet stargazing. A wasted night. Another wasted night.
Maybe some other time.
The cold and frost covered grass brushed over her feet. She shivered. She missed the quiet of their home, the warmth and cold they shared in bed, and the peace that she felt in her soul. Standing in the middle of some forest of some foreign country, she felt vulnerable. The only human out of hordes of supernatural beings.
She felt like a burden, even if they hailed her as a blessing.
The end of each night was the same. They began to blur. How many had passed? How many had died? She lost count. New hideouts every few days, depending on where the fighting was the most serious. They were always moving. Sometimes, there wouldn’t be that much to fight. Abhay could come in between to check on her, usually bearing wounds that took longer to heal. She always scolded him with a look and touched each and every wound, making them vanish instantly. Small injuries that she sustained healed quickly, also thanks to Abhay’s blood in her system.
Please be a little more careful, she always thought to him.
One quick kiss upon her cheek, then he would be running off to kill some more of the enemy if there were any. Abhay could at least smile at these times. At least she was in his sights.
At dawn, they would retire. Abhay requested a separate room for them, so as to not make Piya uncomfortable around the other vampires. They were all in the same area, the darkest one, and many of them still gave her looks, as if they wanted to kill her at the end of all this. He called home, asking if everyone was alright there.
Are you alright, jaan?
I’m okay. You?
She unbuttoned his shirt and checked for any other injuries. The skin was without flaw or scar. He was okay, sated and unscathed.
You should get some rest. There might be more next time.
Piya nodded and held onto his arm, making sure he wouldn’t leave her alone. Abhay cupped her cheek and smiled, tucking her in and joining her a few moments later, a book in hand. He would read while she slept. But even he was eventually tired, and the sun made his eyes droopy, and while holding her in his arms with added warmth, he too dozed off for some much needed rest.
This will all be over soon, I promise.
He couldn’t say this enough. He lost count of how many times it came out of his mouth.
—————————————————————————
Ayushmaan watched many of these battles from the treetops, the highest he could find. He thought he’d find more interest in Mandu, who was fighting elsewhere in India, but his attention drifted towards and found Piya. Heavily guarded by the ancient, some of the most powerful supernatural beings on the planet, she couldn’t be touched. Even Abhay lurked nearby, almost obsessively.
His fingers curled inward over her in the air. He wanted to just pluck her from that circle of bodyguards, take her with him, and hasten his own goals.
“If I have you in my hands, even for just a minute, then I can get her under my control.”
He didn’t mind the casualties. A soul was a soul; it didn’t matter if it was friend or foe. He needed all the power he could get. The next blood moon was soon approaching. Like Maithili, none of his comrades realized his absences. The Vitael of higher ranks, the ones that shared his standing, were more than happy to see him missing from the glory of war. They always thought low of him, for being useless, lazy, and yet always staying at Maithili’s side. He wouldn’t be surprised if they were plotting to kill him.
He chuckled to himself and shook his head.
“This useless b*stard….is going to rule you all very soon.”
The spell was ready, the altar was ready, all he needed was a drop of Maithili’s blood. She had been commanding her armies in the shadows. Her voice lingered in their minds, but her presence never met their eyes. But he knew how to call her to him in person.
“I guess I was on my own side this entire time.”
Taking down Piya would be a grand prize, for the soul. But he needed her as bait. The most perfect bait he could find. After the sun began to rise, and the supernatural carnage became required to be hidden with the night, he teleported to the grounds, rubbing the remaining ash into the soil with his boot. The rest ignited under the rays of the sun.
“I’ll give you a grand welcome on the night of the blood moon, Mrs. Raichand.”
