Only 85 overs were possible but India ransacked 357 for 6. After winning the toss, Rohit started briskly with Agarwal before getting out to a pull shot. Agarwal didn't last long either and was lbw to Embuldeniya. Vihari and Kohli then stabilised the innings. Vihari brought up his half-century but Kohli was dismissed for 45. Pant and Iyer added 53 for the fifth wicket to deny Sri Lanka an opening.

What an engrossing day of Test cricket! Every time, India seem to be going ahead quite comfortably, Sri Lanka have found a way back into this game with a wicket. However, India have scored at quite a decent rate and that has made sure that despite them losing six wickets. India will go back as a happier side at the end of Day 1.

Hanuma Vihari: "I would prefer batting at No. 3 because that's where I bat in first-class cricket. When the ball was new it was coming on to the bat nicely. It was difficult to time the ball after it gets old but Rishabh is a different player. We all know how he bats and when it comes off, it's a special innings, and it was a special innings today.
