Gangubai Kathiawadi is probably the worst of all SLB movies I have seen. He has made some decent movies. It is exceptionally slow and it is not a slow burn, it just meanders along like a rudderless ship. I tried to find some good things in his direction of Gangubai Kathiawadi but there aren't any. Screenplay is no better.

For instance betrayal of Gangu by Ramnik and she being forcibly made into a sex worker should have been one of the impactful scenes of the movie. But Sanjay Leela Bhansali as director, Utkarshini Vashishta as writer and Alia Bhatt as actor fail completely. On the contrary Madhu's refusal to become a prostitute at any cost is much better and that is due to the actor, Whatever is watchable in the movie, it comes from the actors.

There are a few lines that bring smile to your face but they are in the end, when the movie is almost over.

Vijay Raaz as Raziyabai is very good and so is Indira Tiwari as Kamli .

Alia Bhatt might be a good actor, I have not seen many of her films, but she is not good enough here. A role of a lifetime and she fails to bring forth the emotions of the character. The scene where she talks to her mother who tells her, her father is dead could have been great but Ms. Bhatt did not do well their too. But I also doubt if any female actor from current generation(the ones I have seen) would have been able to play Gangubai's role any good. The talent cupboard looks woefully bare.

Gangubai Kathiawadi is like a dead man's ECG, not many signs of life in it.

This has PR written all over it. Just like the Gehraiyaan director saying Ananya locked herself in the washroom when she heard the script. There’s no need to be so dramatic and obvious. We all know KJO made Kalank as an audition for SLB and then made deals with him for Alu to get the part. I remember the forum was shocked that SLB was also a sell out
