well Dumbledore is a bit shady but many chars are grey in hp
Oh the fanfiction, Quora and some section of the Tumblr fandom absolutely abhor Dumbledore. He's obviously not as black and white as the quintessential good characters. I think the dislike stems from the fact that when we read his character as a kid, we appreciated and idolized him (since we mostly saw him from Harry's perspective)
But as we grew up and when we started to analyze his actions, a lot of his problematic or as Pooja said "Grey" shades became visible. He was hardly omniscient and a God as the wizard world portrayed him to be, but he was just a normal person wizard like all of them with his own set of flaws and faults. That's why Harry started to feel unsettled in the Half Blood Prince and betrayed in the Deathly Hallows when he found out that he was always supposed to die in the end as he was a horcrux. Personally, I think that Dumbledore made the decision due to two factors: The protection Dursleys provided due to Lily's magic on the house and because he didn't want Harry to end up like Draco. Spoilt, Excessively pampered and narcissistic. The wizard world would have spoiled him rotten, made him drunk on power which would not let Harry be the highly empathetic person he grew out to be. Does all of this justifies Dumbledore's behavior though ? No.
But as I said, it just highlights his own flaws.
