Chapter 5

"Maa, why can't I just wear a button down shirt?"

"Abhi! Engagement party mein ache kapde pehnte hain. Sach mein tere pass koi sherwani type kuch nahi? Maine dekha tha photos mein tu ne Diwali mein pehna tha."

"Maa, I didn't bring it with me aur fine. Aap la doh koi. I don't know how to shop for this type of clothing." Abhi turned off his laptop and looked at his mom.

"Pehle kaise shop ki phir?" Manjiri asked sitting on edge of Abhi's bed.

"Ananya got it for me last time." Abhi got up from his chair and sat next to his mom.

"Abhi sach sach bata. Tu sach mein Ananya ko bhool gaya hai na? You really are over her? You really didn't love her? Tum doh saal saath mein the."

"Maa. I liked Ananya. She's a great girl. But no I didn't love her and she knew that from the start. I couldn't give her what she wanted from me so it was better for us to end it. We are still good friends and she has found someone who actually loves her." Abhi smiled at Manjiri.

"Aur yeh ladki jis se tu ab shaadi karega?"

"I told you, Maa. I'll give her the respect she deserves. I'll do my absolute best to keep her happy. But I can't promise you that I'll love her because that's not something I believe in."

"Pyar ke bina kaisi shaadi hoti hai?" Manjiri shook her head wondering if she's making the right decision. "Har ladki ka sapna hota hai ke usse aisa pati miley jo uss se pyar karta ho."

"Toh aap aisi ladki ko doondh lo who is okay with not having that.....Maa. I'm not telling you I'll purposely try not to love my future wife. If that happens, it will happen. I will tell you, I'll be fully committed to this relationship."

"Theek hai phir."

"Okay can you please get me something to wear for Krish's engagement?”

"Nahi beta. Mujhe bohat kaam hai." Manjiri said getting up. "Aisa kar. Tu Akshu ke saath chali ja. Aisi cheezon ke baare mein woh ziyada achi tara jahnti hai."

"Kya? Woh nautanki? Maa! Apney uske kapde dekhe hain? She dresses like Neil!" Abhi shook his head.

"Chup kar. I'll call Akshu to take you. Bas." Manjiri left the room.

The next day while Abhi was still eating, he heard something breaking. Aagayi toofan!

Akshu came to greet everyone and Abhi quickly gave her a look-over. She was in a black t-shirt with some band name, torn boyfriend jeans, white converse shoes and her hair up in a messy bun. Abhi sighed. He preferred girls dressing up and looking proper. He didn't think Akshu even knew what makeup was.

"Ready to go, Abhimanyu?" Akshu smiled at him. Yeh Manjiri aunty ko sirf main mili thi iss khadoos ko shopping le jane ke liye? Aaj tak meri shopping bhi Aaru ne ki hai....

"Arrr...ya. Let's go." Ab bas yeh koi nautanki na karey. Maa could have asked Shefali or Neil but noooo!

"Akshu beta apni pasand ka koi acha suit lena!" Manjiri waved them bye.

Once they left, everyone prayed for this to go well.

"Yeh kaisa hai?" The salesman pulled up a burgundy colored sherwani with pearls on the collar.

"Yeh Saab aapko ITV ke villain lagte hain? Bhai, please. Pakao mat. Acha dikhao." Akshu sat on the chair surrounded by different sherwanis. Abhi sat next to her getting more irritated. It's been 2 hours.

"Akshara, bas koi pick kar lo."

"Acha hoga toh pick kar loongi na?"

"Didi, bilkul aesa Ranbir Kapoor ne Channa Mereya mein pehna tha." The salesperson pulled up a cream suit.

"Dikhao!" Akshu got excited. "Aarey Haan. Yeh acha hai. Aise aur dikhao. Siddharth Malhotra wala koi hai?"

Yeh Channa Mereya hai kya? Koi movie hogi. "Akshara yeh Channa whatever wala theek hai." Abhi sighed.

"Haan? Matlab haan. You can pull it off. Theek hai phir. Let's try it."

The Channa Mereya one ended up having bright golden pajamas which Akshu found too gaudy. Just as Abhi was about to walk out, Akshu gasped.

"Forget Channa Mereya! Let's nacho! This one is perfect, Abhimanyu." It was an off white sherwani with delicate threadwork.

Abhi tried it on. Even Abhi had to agree it was actually nice. Not bad, Ms. Nautanki.

Akshu looked at him and whistled. "Wah hero!" She turned to the shopkeeper. "Forget Ranbir, name this one Dr. Abhimanyu Birla."

"Akshara!"

"Tareef kar rahi hoon." Khadoos!

Abhi shook his head and went to pay.

"Let's go home now?" Abhimanyu asked as they walked out of the store.

Khadoos aur kanjoos? "Pehle kuch ka le, please? Manjri aunty said you will buy me lunch."

"Chalo, phir. Where you wanna eat?" Abhi sighed. Maa bhi na.

"Yahan kareeb mein bohat achi jagah hai, let's go."

"Badi Mumma, Akshu kahan hai?" Aaru went and asked her grandmother.

"Woh Abhimanyu ki shopping mein help karne gayi hai."

"Badi Mumma. Akshu. Aaj tak woh apni shopping mein help nahi kar saki. She literally always buys clothes that look curtains or bedsheets. Do you remember her favorite red dress and how awful it was?"

Badi Mama laughed. "Yaad mat dila. Maine usse jhoot kaha ke woh ko gaya hai but I threw it away."

"Good! Warna main aag laga dehti." Aaru laughed.

"Acha Aaru beta suno. Tu jahnti hai na teri behn todhi jalli hai. Please make sure she looks her best at the engagement." Badi Mama requested Aaru.

"Badi Mumma aap ko pata yeh kitna mushkil hai? I mean, hai toh bohat ziyada sundar magar aap jahnte ho na usse? Guaranteed 2-3 times toh giregi lenghe mein. Waise usse kis ke liye acha lagna hai?" Aaru asked suspiciously.

"Aisa e. Tu khud kehti hai woh bedsheets pehn ke ghoomti hai toh kabhi toh achi lage. Waise Aaru. Sach sach bata, Akshu ka boyfriend nahi hai na?"

"Badi Mumma, koi handle kar sakta hai usse?"

"Haan. Aisa bhi hai jo usse handle kar sake." Badi Mumma smiled.

"Kaun?"

"Bas hai koi."

"Bhaiya, ek aloo chaat, ek masala dosa with extra gunpowder masala, ek aloo dosa, doh vada pav, ek pav baji aur ek katti role." Akshu turned to Abhimanyu. "Aap ko kuch chaiye?"

Abhimanyu stared at her. "All this was for you?"

"Haan? I don't know what you like, na?"

"Right. Bhai, ek masala dosa please." The waiter took the order and left.

"I'll let you know, breakfast mein aaj maine sirf todha poha kaya tha so iss liye."

"I'm not judging...maybe I am. You know, most girls are very conscious about their figure and all."

"Most girls have their priorities wrong. Mujhe kisi ko impress toh nahi karna. Main pehle se itni cool hoon. So why starve?"

Abhimanyu smiled. "Tumhe pata hai tum apney aap mein ek ajooba ho."

"Someone wise once said: jag mujhpe lagai pabandhi main hoon e nahi iss duniya ki." Akshu put her hand on her forehead in a dramatic pose.

"Another filmi line?" Abhi asked shaking his head.

"Song. Oooh the food is here! I'm famished."

Abhi watched in amazement as the tiny girl in front of him finish eating all the food.

Is Abhi warming up to Akshu? Will Akshu trip and fall in her lengha?
